OC How did you end up finding kbin? Did you migrate here from Reddit?

I was initially introduced to Mastodon a few years ago by a close friend and picked up on it quickly given the benefits of not having to deal with advertising, or being shown what a mega-corporation thought I should have to see through algorithms. I have since found a great instance over on cupoftea.social that promotes quality...

A small FAQ to hopefully help new users to kbin (kilioa.org)

I wanted to post this here since I want to help as much as I can in my own way to people coming here for the first time. I hope it is useful and helpful! I tried to assume low knowledge with the Fediverse in my responses which I collected here from a different post and assembled into a single article....

I had heard of Mastodon being a Twitter alternative but since I never use Twitter I never looked into it. Now with reddit imploding this is my first real foray into the Fediverse. Started at Lemmy, made an account with kbin, and once I figure out how to link them together or access kbin via my Lemmy account on Jerboa I expect I'll probably delete one of the two accounts.

But it's a process, that I haven't quite figured out yet. I think Fediverse as a whole, while being a relatively simple concept, in practice is complex enough to confuse a lot of otherwise fairly tech savvy people. I'm not a hobbyist but I've got history with programming and networking, so I'm no stranger to niche tech, but I'm finding myself occasionally confused by things here.

Fediverse is great tech that I think is being held back a bit by its presentation. But I'm here now and I expect I'll probably be here a while, so here's hoping we can build the sort of community we're looking for here.

computerboss,

Honestly I think the AMA showed that they are not backing down. Spez answered like 14 total questions on an AMA with 30k comments the last I checked. They don't seem to care, and I don't see there being a significant number of people actually leaving reddit either, the alternatives just don't fix the problems people are having with reddit. If you use a 3rd party app because it has more features, are you going to leave the platform for another platform that only has one 3rd party app?

Threads upon threads of comments with people trying to one-up each other with like lyrics, film quotes, just the least funny shit you've read a thousand times on every popular post.

TIL The statue of young David was made from a flawed piece of marble that had been ruined by two artists, and no one was willing to work on it. Despite the flaws in the marble, Michelangelo accepted the challenge and created this masterpiece. (www.britannica.com)

Michelangelo turned an unfinished statue into an iconic piece of Renaissance art.

Yup, boosts are a "I think people should see this button". @ernest mentioned in a post that boosts bump a post to the top of Active and add points to it being Hot.

fross,

I'm trying to understand this comment, but i can't get my head around it. Unfortunately I find the reddit vs fediverse table (is it that?) actually more a hindrance than help. It doesn't format, at least where I'm looking from (kbin.social on web) so I don't really understand what it's trying to communicate.

It would really help if you could describe what this hierarchy is. It doesn't even need to be compared to reddit - just a clear explanation. Or of course a link to something that describes it plainly to those who are new to it. Thank you!

/kbin quick update

As you noticed, I had to temporarily enable DDoS protection. Someone is trying quite effectively to distract me from my activities ;p Unfortunately, this may cause some issues with the federation. I will try to cut off the traffic as soon as possible and return to normal operation. Thank you for all your support and patience! :)

Appreciate the work you are doing and it's been cool watching kbin develop so rapidly! Uptime has been impressive given the circumstances.

DJGlowworm,

Is there a way to see all the communities from another instance?

kimli,

This is not complete by any means but this is what I did (recently):

  • Explore around: Currently there's an influx of new user and communities (subreddits) being created. Total users has doubled (give it take) in 10 days. Active monthly users has increased 6x in the same 10 days
  • Try to engage: For many (most?) of us this is a brand new place. Not so long ago it felt rather quiet (I remember taking a look a few months back and thinking "It's a cool idea but there's not enough content") As a forever lurker, this has been easier said than done. The vibe I get (YMMV) is from early Slashdot / Slashdot clones, only much more vibrant. I haven't seen something similar in a really long time
  • Missing content? Either you wait (keep exploring) or become proactive. Even if you intend to hand it over down the line, create/start building any community you are missing. For those that are joining after you, it's reassuring having a moment of "Hey, here there's also interest in $RANDOM_THING"
  • Be aware of size: Recently I was taking about this. Some "not so large subreddits " have 10x users subscribed as users in the whole "lemmyverse"? "lemmy ecosystem"? (I'm still not sure how it's named)
  • The system is quite new and has had a sudden explosion in popularity. Be prepared to see some rough edges here and there.

A couple of things that might be odd to get your head around:

  • Instances: Although you can think of instances as a "whole reddit" they all work together. Both of us are on different instances and I'm commenting on your post. I'm not even sure without scrolling on which server resides the post
  • Fediverse: The collaboration is not constrained to instances alone. I was engaging (from Lemmy) with a post originating on a different platform (kbin) and checking how it looks on a third platform (Mastodon). The analogy might be bad, but think of commenting from Reddit on a post originated on digg and checking how you see/comment on it from Twitter.

But the most important part, enjoy your time here

Banana, to kbinMeta

Just a really minor UI Change. I'd like the ability for posts on KBin to auto show me the image without me having to click on the little image icon. I am a lazy banana and I don't like to click this button for every post, especially in image based magazines.

Kbin Roadmap 2023

A certain stage of development has ended - a prototype was created that allowed me to verify whether such a form makes sense in the #fediverse. Until now, it was a project that I developed in my free time. Now, thanks to the great people from Nlnet, I will be able to devote much more time to it. This time, we have already...

Very impressive for a prototype 👏
Excited to see where this project is headed 👀

Yes, you can create a new magazine here: https://kbin.social/newMagazine - there are some time limitations. Don't worry, all the magazines will be handed over to the community. I have a lot of work to do with the code, so I will definitely need help here ;)
