@ernest You should look into that, how is it allowed?

Ugh, and 10A somehow also hasn't been banned yet (and a quick check to his profile shows that he isn't just still making bad-faith arguments about "free speech" but is also still spreading xenophobia, fake news about the last election, and so on).

I'm out. Anyone know of a kbin (not lemmy) instance with reasonably good moderation?

Danatronic,

Wasn’t sure if that reference would hit, my bad. The utaru are a society of people in horizon forbidden west who are super in tune with the lands around them.

They each carry a seed pouch with them throughout their lives, and add seeds that are meaningful to them.

Upon death, when the seed pouch can be recovered, it’s planted in the sacred grove and tended as a memorial.

Guerrilla just refers to them being planted wherever instead of being brought home, like guerrilla gardening (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guerrilla_gardening)

I’m realizing now that’s a lot of really niche references I took for granted, that’s totally my bad.

Oops, somehow missed this comment.

Here's the symbolism (copied from Reddit):

American Samoa

  • The triangular pattern is taken from the existing flag, just flipped to be more prominent when waving.
  • The red, white, and blue symbolize American Samoa's link to the United States.
  • The color arrangement—a field of red with a blue shape on the left and white symbols within the blue—is similar to that of the Samoan flag.
  • The war club and fly-whisk are symbols of Samoan leaders.

Guam

  • The blue field stands for the vast ocean surrounding Guam.
  • The red symbolizes the violent history of the island.
  • The two shapes are meant to resemble a slingstone and a sinahi necklace, both Chamorro symbols.
  • Yellow is used to represent the hope of a prosperous future and so that the center of the flag resembles islands in the sea.

Northern Mariana Islands

  • The blue once again represents the ocean.
  • The white slopes on the sides of the flag evoke the Mariana Trench, which lies near the Mariana Islands.
  • The latte stone in the center of the flag is a Chamorro symbol.
  • There are 14 stars for the 14 islands in the territory. The red and pink resemble that of the original flag's wreath, a symbol of the Carolinians.

Puerto Rico

  • The white stripes are now yellow to better symbolize Puerto Rico's Spanish history.
  • The rest of the symbolism is the same.

U.S. Virgin Islands

  • 'Murican colors represent 'Murica.
  • The Nordic cross alludes to the islands' former status as a Danish colony.
  • There are 3 stars for the 3 main islands in the territory.
NotAPenguin,

This just seems like a bunch of straw-man arguments?

There's vegan fur and leather alternatives which aren't just plastic.
Actual fur and leather are also terrible for the environment.

No vegans are yelling at indigenous hunters or saying that people of color should be exploited, using other people's suffering as an excuse to hurt animals yourself is silly.

Have you ever actually seen a vegan go after indigenous people? Or have you just seen people complaining about nothing like in this tweet?

Why spend so much time and energy trying to undermine veganism for no good reason?
We're simply asking you to not needlessly exploit animals.

electric,

Maybe not a right but more a commitment for governments towards public transportation. Not having a car makes everything so much harder. Having as much coverage as possible within reason, more buses and drivers, expanding metro lines. Right now in my city it is just “bearable”, I am at least grateful I can do things like see buses on the map and transferring to trains is easy. Was much worse before! Not like governments wouldn’t be able to make their money back, and imagine how many less car crashes and traffic clogs we could have. Not to mention the environmental benefits.

Also electric buses are cool. So quiet and can charge in them.

Edit: To elaborate on why it should be a right: it is not like in the olden days when you could walk to the store or your job. Everything is simultaneously dense and far thanks to how zoning works and cities being car-oriented. The right to mobility exists in America, but what if we took it further and made sure you really could go where you wanted without having to invest in a car?

TheDoctorDonna,

Public transportation should be free for everyone on top of that. We need to do everything possible to discourage driving in favour of public transport for the sake of the environment and our future selves, plus the bus driver would no longer be able to turn away poor people on hot days.

The yellow symbolizes goldenrod, Kentucky's state flower. The green, which has a slight blue tint, represents Kentucky being the Bluegrass State.

I wanted to symbolize "United We Stand" without just putting the motto on there, and I settled on a simple saltire. I view the two crossing lines as evoking unity. Even if it's quite the stretch, I think it looks great.

The checkered pattern comes from the checkered "finish" flag and represents the Kentucky Derby.
