Working parents, how do you find time to game?

I grew up an avid gamer. But now, among my 50-hour work week, helping my kids with their math homework, grocery shopping, and house chores, I’m no longer able to find enough free time to really dive into a game. I mostly play casual games that I can drop in and out of but forget about the 40hr+ games requiring commitment....

Goronmon,

The first year or so is rough. Not much time to play unless my wife was willing to take the kids for a bit.

Once they get past two or so, it gets a little easier. But I still sometimes will be lucky to get an hour to play during the day before I'm ready for bed. Other times I might be able to play for a couple hours straight, but those times are rare, and it's usually done at the expense of a bit of my wife's sanity.

Goronmon,

Most people aren’t averse to donating even a few {currency of choice} to help keep something they love running, especially when they know it’s not an extractive, exploitative business model.

I would say it's the opposite and that most people would go out of their way to avoid paying for sites they used, even frequently. Most people view content on the Internet as something that should be universally free, regardless of context.

Goronmon,

It's hard to argue that a company can be a monopoly in an industry when they are third place in that industry (and still will be after said acquisition).

Goronmon,
Goronmon,

None of what you said explains how Microsoft today (not 15 years ago, or in some hypothetical future) will have a monopoly before or after this acquisition.

By allowing MS to do this the courts are signing to the world that smaller companies shouldn’t even bother competing because they can never outspend MS’s war chest.

Which company would you have expected to compete in the console space in the foreseeable future that will have changed their minds because of this acquisition? I'm not aware of any, but I wouldn't mind being shown that this is a real concern.

Goronmon,

The issue in this instance is that's its hard to prove that a company not even close to leading to the market is going to somehow dominate that market through a single (albeit large) acquisition.

Goronmon,

Microsoft have been acquiring huge companies (Bethesda, for example), hit games (Minecraft), and key development parters from competition (remember Rare?) from the beginning of Xbox.

And yet, they are still in third place in the gaming market behind Sony and Nintendo. If those acquisitions didn't turn Microsoft into a monopoly already, what will be significantly different if they acquire AVB?

Goronmon,

Yeah, in no version of how this played out was he going to not receive hundreds of millions of dollars. That was never an option.

Goronmon,

It's some form of copy-paste response that I've seen them make before when someone asks about Diablo 4. Though I think the list has grown since the last couple of times I've seen it.

Goronmon,

People always make these claims but never provide any real proof. It's always some game of telephone where "my buddy saw some Twitter post referencing a YouTube video where Denuvo eats babies".

I'm not even claiming that it's a made up problem, but it's always the same vague references.

Goronmon,

It still returns better results for many queries than the alternatives. My ability to weigh usefulness against ideological concerns is pretty limited at times, so I'll use which search engine gives me the best results.

Goronmon,

I haven't seen anything that sounded like good news regarding biofuels in years. Issues with inability to scale while keeping costs reasonable as well as it still generating lots of pollution.

The Diablo clickbait is unreal, is the enshitification of the internet reaching the gaming communities now?

Does everyone just think they can make a living playing games? Trying to search for Diablo 4 info gets you nothing but mountains of useless clickbait youtube videos. Gotta waste my time jumping thru the video just to find out the guy is dumber about the game than I am....

Goronmon,

I wouldn't lump this in with the whole "enshitification" issue.

This is the end result of gamers not placing any value on the content they consume. People want free content, regardless of quality, over anything else.

So, as you would expect, what you are seeing is free content, regardless of quality, being created en masse.

Goronmon,

The format makes no sense for the information being consumed, it's like this for their benefit not the viewers.

People are trying to get paid in a market where no one wants to pay. That's why the format is being used.

Goronmon,

People who use to just post their excel sheets and research on some bb forum for free somewhere starting getting paid by icy veins or maxroll.

Maybe your expectation that people should do all that work to free is unrealistic and just a sign of your own entitlement issues?

Goronmon,

Only crying I'm seeing is people upset that the quality of their free content isn't up to their personal standards.

Goronmon,

I haven't figured out a reason to use a separate email client up to this point. I just use the webapps for Gmail and Fastmail.

Goronmon,

I hope this problem will be solved with developers using new programming languages, like Rust or Go, instead of web-based ones, like Electron.

Electron isn't a programming language, it's an abstraction layer to allow desktop apps to render apps on top of a portable browser engine layer instead of a platform specific layer.

The existence of Rust/Go doesn't change the desire to have an app that can be written once and be run across many different platforms.

Goronmon,

It's more the core of how Discord works then anything. The fact that it's hard for knowledge to persist, leading to channels just being people asking the same questions over and over.

And it's not really indexable or searchable, so even if people are trying to provide good information, people are going to struggle to find it.

Goronmon,

Have to remember to change the results from "related" to "answers" to make sure you aren't seeing completely unrelated comments.

Goronmon,

Even the happy scenario sounds pretty bleak, where people in skilled positions are replaced by existing workers who are supported by AI to take on additional work that used to be done by more skilled workers.

Thus you end up with a race to the bottom as workers become easily replaceable cogs that are just baby-sitting the AI tools that are doing the hard work.

What type of console form factor could evolve beyond the Switch?

Been thinking about it recently, and I honestly feel that the Switch is probably the perfect console form factor. Obviously, physical specifications can be improved (faster processor, more battery life), but in terms of the form factor itself, it's so balanced in the way you can play it on a big screen and handheld...

Goronmon,

Given the universal issues with stick drift these days, I would be extremely frustrated if a $300+ console came with a set of irreplaceable controllers.

Goronmon,

Just in case anyone tries to proclaim this was due to the recent drama, the latest valuation was May 31st, before the vast majority of the recent API stuff went down, and that was only a smaller portion of the larger valuation drop that happened earlier.

Goronmon,

There are way more games than ever before, and even in the AAA space there are more options for varying games than ever as well.

The best part of video games back in the day was making memories with your friends...

Is the issue with the games themselves, or is it an issue of getting older and not being able to connect with friends in the same way as you did when you were younger? If your goal when playing games is to feel like you did when you were a kid, I have some bad news for you.

Goronmon,

Problem is nobody likes or wants NFTs.

That's not true. /r/superstonk is definitely on board. As is anyone hoping to pump and dump NFT markets.

Outside of that though, yeah, no one really wants NFTs.
