Yeah, I don't believe for one second that those 4 admins have actually, meaningfully, personally vetted 11,000+ users.
So, if they are struggling the moderate a community with 11,000+ users, it would make sense for them to limit an even large number of external users for the time being until they feel they have things better in control, correct?
I don't really care whether a game is indie or AAA. I just see a game that I want to play and looks interesting, and then I'll play it.
But I will say, that once I had kids and began having limited time to play (or at least limited time to focus on games for more than small chunks of time), I've tended to favor AAA games over indie games. Mainly because there are plenty of games out there in the AAA space if you have varied insterest in genres.
In the last six-ish months I've played Destiny 2, Diablo IV, LotRO, Elden Ring, Code Vein, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, emulated FFII (still AAA), Lost Odyssey, Diablo 2 Resurrected, Disgaea 5 Complete, Atelier Ryza 2, Pokemon Violet, Skyrim and Vagrant Story. The games that might be considered indie that I've spent time on is Hades and SOMA.
There just isn't a lot of room to fit in other indie games between all of those. And I'm still not even playing all the games I've technically purchased in that time period which includes Shin Megami Tensei V and Tales of Vesparia for the Switch.
2023 is shaping up to be one of the best years for gaming in ages. From Tears of the Kingdom to Diablo IV to Street Fighter 6, it's already been a pretty great year, with quite a few big-budget releases coming later this year...
It’s disappointing to see some of the larger subreddits going public with a ‘what’s the point?’ tone. Most are staying private, but some aren’t. As if Reddit doesn’t exist solely because of its user generated content. If enough subs permanently shut down, they’ll be forced to reconsider their API position. Social...
I've been trying to make people aware of Lemmy on discord and Mastodon, but it's always met with resistance citing "the devs are pro authoritarianism tankies." Kbin seems to be picking up steam because of the developer baggage....
The BBC admits to being wrong about a lot of their reporting. Quote: "There was no massacre on Tiananmen Square."
"Technically we aren't sure if the people killed were directly within the bounds of Tiananmen Square itself or just the areas surrounding the square." isn't quite the defense you seem to think it is.
Smart move of them to redirect away from closed subs to ones still open.
Sounds more like they are just redirecting to the homepage rather than alternative subreddits. Which I guess works in some ways, but if you are trying to target a specific subreddit with an ad, having it go to a general purpose page seems much less useful and valuable.
#1 I can get on board with, but #2 and #3 seem a bit, for lack of a better word, "naive".
Who wants to be an unpaid volunteer to work potentially hours a day and be beholden to the whims of a community, the exact same people they have to worry about moderating? If you censor or ban someone, now you have to worry about them instigating a revolt to get you demodded as well? How many people are willing to both actual do hard work as a moderator, and also deal with that sort of nonsense?
So, you can't do ads, but good luck asking people to pay up. If there is anything Redditors (and ex-Redditors) hate more than anything, it's asking them to pay money for anything. If you can figure out this problem then you'll have solved a problem that has plagued online communities for decades.
Apparently there's some sort of fix in the pipeline related to this, but at the very least, I'd like to be able to type kbin.social/m/kbinmeta and be redirected to kbin.social/m/kbinMeta
I don't think you can actually create the username with a difference case though, correct? The check for uniqueness in magazines and usernames appeared to me to validate that, but the routing rules for them don't appear to try to resolve the differences.
Microsoft Edge has many convenient features to improve your browsing experience. However, some of those features raise privacy concerns. One, for example, sends images you view directly to Microsoft.
I've really enjoyed the game so far. Though the last Act is interesting in that it had some of my favorite parts of the campaign but also some of the dumbest. Not sure how I feel about the ending either.
But overall I'm pretty impressed. D4 feels more like a sequel to D2 than D3 ever was and the level of polish is great.
The build variety once you start hitting the higher world-tiers had me a bit concerned. With Barbarian it feels like you basically have to go with three shout skills, only leaving room for a couple actual options for skills outside of that. Send the legendary aspects don't seem particularly balanced. But those are all things that they can work on over time, and as the title states, it's only been a week.
Tomorrow at 1pm EST is Microsoft's summer game showcase. Anyone have any bold predictions? Praying for something that has likely no chance of being shown?...
It's hard to get excited about Microsoft's game offerings these days as it feels like it's been a while since they've had a big win on the game side of things. If a had to predict anything it would be that MS doesn't come out with anything to surprising, they keep it simple and focus on building hype for Starfield.
Which, btw, I hope turns out great both because Xbox needs a win and no game since Skyrim has scratched that same gaming itch for me, so I'm really counting on Bethesda coming through.
I am playing Pokemon Violet at the moment and it is a total bore. I have played the game so many times and I just want to run around catch Pokemon and battle....
Honestly, even as a fan of Pokemon for decades of this point, I don't see a problem with the game being targeted at children. I have children now and I am all for games that target her age group instead of exclusively mine. Even if it's a flagship series like Pokemon.
I assume that's because their goal is to outline why third-party apps won't be needed. The whole point of this drama is that Reddit wants to get rid of the third-party apps, so they are going to do everything to try to convince people why not having them will be fine.
I can say that the armor available in Diablo IV is pretty solid. You can make your character look pretty badass without cosmetics. But it's still ridiculous both that they exist at all and the cost is ridiculous.
Just cosmetic. D4 has a transmog system where you can apply any appearance you've unlocked to your equipment. The store cosmetics just add those appearances to the list.
Im joining in on the reddit ditching thing, and was kinda worried at first that i wouldnt be able to like use it the way i did reddit as it feels like a whole new place, but after engaging with posts and people and actually being a part of lemmy rather than being lurk mode all the time i was pleasantly surprised with how easy it...
Yeah, if you checkout the Github, one of the first lines on the README is:
Warning: You can submit issues, but between Lemmy and lemmy-ui, I probably won't have too much time to work on them. Learn jetpack compose like I did if you want to help make this app better.
So I doubt the app experience is going to improve much anytime soon unless other people decide they want to take up the mantle (or create alternative apps entirely).
what does it mean that Beehaw "defederated" from lemmy.world?
I thought I understood, but I still have Beehaw content in my feed, so I guess I don't understand after all... Can someone dumb it down for me?
Indie vs AAA games
I remember growing up playing Nintendo games up and other AAA games until I started watching YT. Particular TB and adjacent YouTubers....

I think we should (politely) message major hobby subreddits that went public to go private again. It's important to continue the protest.

Ripples Through Reddit as Advertisers Weather Moderators Strike (www.adweek.com)
Reddit is redirecting some impressions away from existing communities, and some advertisers are pausing campaigns.
So what corners have redditors gathered to during the blackout?
Here (kbin), Lemmy, Tildes... I hear Mastodon had a user spike. Is there something obvious I'm missing?...
I don't know if it's possible to change now, but magazines being case-sensitive seems like a recipe for disaster
