It’s only a matter of time until more subs start meeting the same fate. I’m glad to have found a new platform to move to. After reading the posts from the Apollo dev, it seemed like the writing was on the wall about Reddit

Spez is demonstrating “thanks I hate it (the users)”

It was banned when the post was made, it appears that it has switched to private. Haven’t seen any public update about what changed

There has been talk about need of new moderation tools, link to one here: Feature Request: Add IP Bans There has already been some good discussion in the comments of the ticket, please feel free to chime in with your thoughts (codeberg.org)

Hey I don’t know if you guys have seen this floating around, but this seems to be a really solid start for consolidation of information: https://kilioa.org/m/kbinfaqs/t/725/A-small-FAQ-to-hopefully-help-new-users-to-kbin

Just noticed your username and the lack of a tattoo community here, that might be a great place to start!

Hopefully that magazine will start getting more traction as the user base here grows, which it sounds like it has exploded over the last few days

I just got my bare metal instance up and running today, just waiting for my DNS records for mail servers to get pushed out so I can make my instance active. I’m hoping to also tackle some code if I get a chance. I don’t know how to properly share matrix chat rooms, but the one for kbin is :matrix.org It has been incredibly helpful on the technical side of things

Doesn’t count if you are replying to yourself ;)

Honestly, I know we hate this practice in video games but it could actually help federation. Microtransactions for cosmetics. It can be hard to convince people to donate money, people don’t even want to pay a subscription to use a service. You know what people do like though? Customization options and ways for them to stand out.

There are basically limitless options that could be sold for fundraising purposes. Colored user name, profile borders, etc. None of the cosmetics would boost that persons posts in any way but it would help their profile stand out/be more unique (if they want it to be) and most importantly raise additional funding.

People like to feel like they are “getting something” for their money. (Even if donating is technically them getting to use the instance)

Donate $5 to keep fediverse instance running? :drake_no:
Buy $5 profile border that looks like it was ripped from GeoCities? :drake_yes:

Until enough small instances fail/disappear. It’s kind of like with users, if you have a bunch of users that only comment twice a year..if one leaves, meh not a big deal. As more and more of them leave that is 2^n less comments you are getting. At first the drain isn’t noticeable but by the time it is it’s likely too late, too many people are gone and your website is a shell of what it used to be.

People keep saying to push people into a bunch of smaller servers but the same thing will happen. Especially since the person that started the server will be likely footing the bill from their own income. If they lose interest or don’t feel like paying for it anymore, poof there goes their server and users. (Yes their users can make new accounts on new instances but how many times do you think people are going to put up with losing their account)

I’d imagine there are other developers such as myself that are leaving Reddit and coming over to the fediverse. Do you know if the Kbin dev has open sourced the code and wants help?

So I understand that to get content indexed from an instance someone has to search for that instance in a particular way.

I’m having the same problem I did on Reddit though. How am I supposed to find communities that I want to subscribe to? If they aren’t indexed then they won’t show up in all and I won’t have a clue to search for them to get them indexed. If they are indexed I might see them in all and can subscribe… for the most part though finding communities I’m interested in feels like random chance.

Like I said, I had the same issue finding subs on Reddit. It was a little easier with Reddit because of Google indexing posts and comments but I don’t know how much indexing Google is doing of fediverse stuff because everything is distributed.
