Landing page, on-boarding, new instances, lots of new users, oh my!

I think we’ve all felt it today across the various Lemmy and Kbin instances. There is certainly a surge of new users and content coming through now (which definitely isn’t a bad thing!)

Now it has been talked ad nauseam to the Nth degree at this point, but to reiterate that point.. we need to get some of the new people to spread to new/other instances to help balance the load. There is a lot to be desired on the on-boarding side of things to get new users up to speed on the sign up process, jargon, and general vibe of the fediverse. (For both Lemmy and Kbin)

Kbin itself has a few new instances if you haven’t seen: https://kbin.fediverse.observer/list

I’ve been thinking about how we can address some of these things as a community and here is my current running list:

If you are technically inclined, make a new instance or help tackle bug/feature requests.

I’m personally in the process of getting another Kbin instance up and running. I have a couple of kinks to work out but I’m hoping it will help take some of the load off of Kbin.social

If you are not technically inclined or want to help in other ways:

  • You don’t have to know how to write code to help rewrite the on-boarding process. Kick off a thread and start collaborating on a step by step process that we can put in a single document. One of the devs can take the finished guide and throw it on a webpage.
  • Another way you can help, we should get a standardized message that can be posted on Reddit that has the relevant links to Lemmy and Kbin. (Hopefully the one we brainstormed and put together in the previous bullet point 😉). Imo, everyone is frantically sharing information and it is confusing some people, having a concise but informative boilerplate that we can reply to people would be a huge help.
  • We should also have a dedicated place to let people know about new instances we are spinning up and that we are in need of moderators, content, users. (Probably best if we make a new place for that so we don’t take over kbinmeta)
  • Lastly, donate to instances if you want to keep the severs going. Only if you can though. All the other ways I mentioned above are great ways you can contribute

So anyways that was my shower thought rant, let me know what you think! I’m down to chat with the community to brainstorm how we want to make this place an even more awesome place moving forward.

Hopefully that magazine will start getting more traction as the user base here grows, which it sounds like it has exploded over the last few days

Hey I don’t know if you guys have seen this floating around, but this seems to be a really solid start for consolidation of information: https://kilioa.org/m/kbinfaqs/t/725/A-small-FAQ-to-hopefully-help-new-users-to-kbin

getting my docker instance running, any recommendations around hosting?

Any VPS that meets the minimum requirements should be OK. I’ve personally used DigitalOcean, Hetzner, and Linode for many personal projects before and I’d expect that any one of these should be fine :)

Alternatively, you could or course go with something else, like GCP, Azure, or AWS as well. It’s your preference in the end.

Great stuff! I currently don’t have access to my laptop but once I am able to I will also set it up locally and contribute to the source code.

I just got my bare metal instance up and running today, just waiting for my DNS records for mail servers to get pushed out so I can make my instance active. I’m hoping to also tackle some code if I get a chance. I don’t know how to properly share matrix chat rooms, but the one for kbin is :matrix.org It has been incredibly helpful on the technical side of things

how do you set up the DNS records for the mail servers? I set up my docker instance but i can't seem to get the mail servers working locally

Just noticed your username and the lack of a tattoo community here, that might be a great place to start!
