This week:

I just finished For We Are Many by Dennis Taylor - and about to start on All These Worlds by Dennis Taylor. This is the third book in the series, and third I'm reading in 3 weeks - they are so much fun. The most enjoyable reads I've been through in a while!

[Audio] The Restaurant at the End of the Universe by Douglas Adams, narrated by Martin Freeman. I've read Hitchhikers Guide several times but have never continued the series.

Reposting last week, cause I'm not sure if that thread is messed up or not...

I finished Abaddon's Gate by James Corey yesterday. I still maintain the TV show is better than the books, but this is the first place I've seen divergence from the main story. I don't recall seeing Samara or Pa in the TV show, but they played a pretty big part in this book. I think Camina Drummer was introduced in the TV show in place of Pa, and there was a lot of overlap of Bull's story that they gave to Camina in the show. I'm not sure how I feel about that. Camina is one of my favorite characters, but a lot of her badassery was tacked on and is attributed to other characters in the book. Ashford though, they made him likable in the TV show, and I will never forgive book version. :|

I finished Rogue Protocol by Martha Wells earlier this week. Quick read, It's book 3 in the Murderbot series. All of them have been fun so far. I'm really enjoying seeing "Consultant Wren" start to connect with others.

[Audio] I also listened to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams; read by Stephen Fry. I've read this book a couple of times over the years, and was interested in hearing Stephen Fry narrate it. I was not disappointed. :)

I started, and finished, We Are Legion (We are Bob) by Dennis E. Taylor last night. First off, "WOW!" This one was a lot of fun. I would recommend this one to anyone who enjoys sci-fi with a sense of humor. Lots of nerdy fandom references and jokes for those of us who grew up on sci-fi TV/Movies and live in a constant state of regurgitating pop culture references.

Hmm, I had 'exploding-heads' blocked. I unblocked that domain and now I am able to see the old thread I posted while logged in. Very weird.

I still get the error when creating new threads, but they do show up now.

McBinary,
McBinary avatar

Oh wow. I could not see any of those other threads about the issue either! Now I see a bunch of them after unblocking that domain.

Please... Millennials will be 50 years old before GTA6 makes it's way to market.

McBinary,

Here to confirm that I was having this issue too - at @e569668 's advice I unblocked a domain that I had blocked and now I am able to see a LOT more threads that I was previously unable to view in magazines. I wasn't even able to view my own threads in magazine.

It appears having ANY domain blocked erroneously filters out threads not at all associated with those domains.

McBinary,
McBinary avatar

Sadly, I don't think that these threads and comments are even visible to those who don't know this is happening... I was not able to see any of the threads until unblocking all domains.

Comments not showing when logged in

Ok, this is a weird problem I’ve had happened twice now. I make a post (one was to a kbin magazine, one to a lemmy community), and I’ll get notifications that there are comments. But when I go to the post to look at them, it will say “5 comments” but show none of them and say there are no comments. But, if I log out, I...

Not sure if it is a coincidence, but that is the same domain I had blocked as well - unblocking fixed the issue for me too.

I "can't" post. I just joined and when trying to post an error occurs but then the post seems to be created. Is this normal?

McBinary,
McBinary avatar

@bybpow
No, definitely not normal. I have been experiencing this for about a week too - but because of the nature of the issue, I'm not sure anyone can see the threads opened to alert people of them.

The Greatest Sci-Fi Directors of All Time (www.denofgeek.com)

Science fiction on film has been around almost as long as cinema itself. Starting in 1895 when the first public showings of motion pictures commenced in France and the United States, and as filmmakers began to realize that they could string scenes together to tell a complete, coherent story, the genres of sci-fi, horror, and...

What is the metric for "greatest sci-fi directors of all time"? It sounds like they're just comparing the most successful old scifi movies. I have a soft spot for some older sci-fi movies, but most old sci-fi film is incredibly corny and not worth wasting time on.

The best sci-fi doesn't come in a single hour and half long film - it comes from season long story archs with several integrating sub plots.
I know there are a lot of gen-X and older out there that like to argue for the self-contained world of episodic Trek, but that format needs to die. It's boring.

It's not often you see an actual heart-shaped ass. Love it.

How about we just scrap the ISP instead and start over with a company that can list what they are charging for? This isn't hard. Either it's a legitimate fee or it's not. I have a feeling they just don't want to disclose that they have been ripping people off for a few extra bucks every bill for the last decade.

Researchers In Singapore Developed AI Program that Can Read Your Mind
    Veuer • 20h
Many believe AI overlords are coming to take our jobs and spy on us, but many are worried they might manipulate the way we think. Well now, according to researchers in Singapore, AI might already be able to read your mind. Veuer’s Tony Spitz has the details.

I thought that was what we were talking about to begin with? It's him, he tried to do the rigging.

Had trouble posting, but I renewed my IP address and now it seems to work (EDIT: It's not working again)

I was having trouble posting - I could comment but if I tried to post, it would always send me to the error page and the post would show up on my profile, but not on the mag I was trying to post it to. I renewed my IP address and that seems to have fixed the problem. Just sharing this if anyone else has the same issue, it might...

I'm having the same issue posting new threads. It will error, and no new thread shows up in the magazine - however the thread is visible from my profile.

Now, if I navigate to the thread from my profile while logged in, there is nothing in the thread. If I log out, the thread is visible in the magazine and there is comments in the thread... So weird.

Can you try viewing he magazine while logged out to see if its visible then?

    McBinary,
    McBinary avatar

I was going to open an issue on codeberg; but 1) my account there isn't letting me log in and 2) I have no idea how to word the issue... Threads are posting, but they are not. I can see them, but also not; and only behave correctly while I'm logged out. It's confusing, and I don't know how anyone else would be able to recreate it...

    McBinary,
    McBinary avatar

Could anyone assist in how to report this problem as an issue on codeberg?

Here is the error I receive.
The post is visible in my profile.
    Not visible in the magazine.
Unless I log out, then it IS visible...

I just don't know how to word this to report an issue. It's so strange.

It happens pretty quickly for me. I usually watch a whole season in one sitting though. I absolutely will not watch a TV show unless it has multiple seasons for this reason.

    McBinary,

I typically resort to reading when I run out of good shows to watch.

Looking at all the books in that series, it looks like they get better and better with each book. Thanks for sharing!

I found the bobiverse books on kindle unlimited! It's next on my list. :)
