Kbin doesn't have the ability to sort comments by top. To me, that is the #1 most important feature, and not having it when it's easy to do shows some real ignorance. The reason I come to these sites is to see the best comments on news of the day.

I've been in computers for 35 years, and every description I've read of the fediverse has been so poorly written I couldn't understand it. The way I look at it, if a typical person will struggle to sign up / understand a product, I shouldn't bother with it because it won't catch on. I'm here now because the signup process is finally streamlined (although it was full of ux problems)
Digg was my favorite website of all time, what people today can't experience is just how good the community was. I think that was due to the reputation system they used. A sufficiently advanced reputation system would fix a lot of problems with social media, with less censorship....
I was initially introduced to Mastodon a few years ago by a close friend and picked up on it quickly given the benefits of not having to deal with advertising, or being shown what a mega-corporation thought I should have to see through algorithms.
