Gnome provides a more consistent user experience because Gnome apps usually have fewer features and don't offer many customization options by default. KDE apps usually have a lot of settings and customization options, but the user interface might be a little less intuitive or you may have to search in a settings menu to find what you're looking for.

In my experience Gnome is pretty, intuitive, and well integrated, but I tend to settle on KDE Plasma because KDE apps often have more advanced functionality and more options for configuration. If you're the type who likes to explore device/app settings to configure things exactly how you want, then consider KDE Plasma. If you'd rather have a minimal but consistent experience out-of-the-box without any tinkering then Gnome is probably the better choice for you.

It is supposedly a personal moral failing every time someone drives too old, too tired, or too impaired, but if trains, busses, & walking were the default ways to get around then this chronic societal problem would diminish dramatically. For the vast majority of US citizens busses, trains, walking, biking, etc are not viable options because US infrastructure & city planning overwhelmingly neglects everything but the automobile.

Incompetent driving is rooted in systemic failures, not personal moral ones.

3d modelling and slicing software for Linux

Hi y’all! This may be a stupid question, but here it goes anyways: I’m thinking of trying to install Linux on a laptop that’s getting slow because of a bloated Windows install. I basically only use it for some internet browsing and 3D modelling (Fusion360) and slicing for my 3D printer (Cura). Is such software available...

Take a look at OpenSCAD for modeling, if you have any programming/webdev experience you'll be making simple parts in <5min. It's the best for making & sharing designs that are easy to modify. Just yesterday I was going to print a phone stand that was a little too narrow, and by changing a single number variable it fit perfectly.

https://youtu.be/NJ7W6HFHPYs - This video from Climate Town explains how the bank or credit union only keeps a fraction of your money in reserve when you deposit your money in a savings account, certificate of deposit, or other bank account. The bank/CU is investing the majority of your money, and ecological harm is not a consideration when they are choosing investments. When you deposit money with a financial institution it is almost certain that some portion of your money is being invested in ecologically harmful organizations.

Similarly, your 401k funds are likely in index funds or mutual funds that hold significant shares in ecologically and socially harmful companies like ExxonMobil, Nestle, Chevron, Coca-Cola, et. al.
Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) investment funds exist that ideally exclude ecologically & socially harmful industries, but every ESG fund I have ever encountered is not nearly exclusive enough and has significantly higher fees.
For example - the Vanguard ESG International Stock ETF VSGX excludes adult entertainment, recreational drugs, gambling, weapons, nuclear power, and fossil fuels, yet Nestle is the second largest holding in the fund, and many of the other stocks in the fund likely contribute to environmental and social harm indirectly.

Consider investing in small-businesses and organizations in your local community instead. It is truly bizarre and unique to our time that investing on Wall Street is more accessible than investing on Main Street.

By contributing to demand for a stock you increase the valuation of that stock. Securities Based Lending is often how companies and executives secure loans and avoid taxable events. By contributing to demand for a stock we facilitate additional funding for the issuer of the stock and it's largest shareholders.

I absolutely agree, cash flow is a much more immediate concern to any company, but one wealthy shareholder divesting can have the same financial impact as ten thousand average citizens boycotting. Local investing is more difficult and risky, but also more rewarding and necessary. It is not just about a monetary return, it is about building social capital and local resiliency.

You're arguing that people should give no consideration to the long-term social and ecological harms of their investments beyond what will make them the most money. By directing our actions in that purely incentivized way we sacrifice everything unprofitable, and that alienation is exactly what causes so many chronic societal issues. I agree that an individual can have very little impact alone, but capitalism places this burden at the individual level.

I have not quite finished the book yet, but Kim Stanley Robinson's The Ministry for the Future is hard-science fiction set in the near future when climate change tipping points start to be reached, and it is so far my favorite book in a long time. It is dystopian, but not bleak or hopeless.

The immutable Fedora releases, like Kinoite, have been the best development distros for me. Immutable Fedora releases come with Toolbox for making per-project containers, so you can have separate de-cluttered dev environments for each project. Toolbox containers are not isolated environments like virtual machines, so performance is on-par with bare-metal as well.

I don't know if Sliverblue or Kinoite is the right choice for your exact workflow, but if you're looking for a Linux host that "just works" out of the box, has a trivial learning curve, and provides serious quality of life improvements then definitely look into Fedora Kinoite.

It is not apartheid, it is the opposite. It is celebrating diversity rather than suppressing it. Instead of pretending diversity does not exist, and thus suppressing all cultures other than the dominant one, the American cultural landscape is changing into something far more representive. It is an experimental, often uncomfortable and messy process, because it does not support separatism.

Vinegar,

No, Twitter has made significant changes that cause many black people to feel unwelcome there, so they are exploring alternatives. One social media platform going to shit is completely different from a "new apartheid 2.0".

My previous comment was meant as a reply to your statement "People in the US are getting super in love with this new apartheid 2.0". Broadly speaking - American culture is becoming less based on apartheid, not more.

I just drove through western Kansas on my way to colorado.... What the Fuck is with all the trump stuff?

It’s hard to pin an exact number, but throughout western Kansas’s ~400 mi slog to Colorado, I was forced to view semi trailers with trump’s visage printed on the side, hilariously corny White Jesus signs, and Anti-Abortion signs approximately every ten miles....

I've driven across Kansas many times, the truck trailers, signs, and painted structures are not unique to Kansas at all. Pretty much any stretch of rural private land along a major highway or interstate in any Republican state will have aggressive Christian and conservative messaging.

If you turn to AM radio stations during the drive you will be hard pressed to find any content other than extremist christian and conservative conspiracy propaganda. The reason people put those signs up is because their entire personality and world-view is fundamentally sculpted by similar messaging.

I recommend watching the documentary Jesus Camp from 2006 to understand where the young and old who support Trump came from. The children in the film are grown now, and most are probably Trump supporters.

I know your struggle. It's not uncommon to experience issues with the Windows installer if the install medium is not created using Microsoft's official Windows installation media creation tool (Use the middle option to download mediacreationtool.exe).

Coming from Linux, I tried writing the Windows .iso directly to a USB drive using dd, this absolutely would not work on any machine for me. Sometimes the install medium would boot, sometimes it wouldn't, but even if it did the installer wouldn't recognize any storage mediums or would fail part way through installing. Using the official media creation tool resolved all the issues I was having.

I do not know why the Windows .iso images do not work on any of my machines, but it sounds like you are experiencing the same issues that I was. Give the official media creation tool a try, hopefully that resolves the issue.

+1 for the Framework laptop from https://frame.work/ . It's my favorite laptop I've ever owned and the Linux support is excellent. There's a healthy Linux community surrounding this laptop and the Arch wiki even has an entire aricle dedicated to it.

It seems that for a large Lemmy instance to be sustainabile long term (especially at the level of traffic reddit sees) it requires ads and/or raising enough donations like Wikipedia

Having said that, is it really the end of the world if large Lemmy instances have ads to make up for any shortfall in donations? Otherwise, how are large instances expected to be sustainable long term, especially if they’re going to ever reach the kinds of traffic Reddit sees?

It's good that this discussion keeps coming up; federated instances are not meant to get so large. Once communities become too large they lose cohesion and culture, invariably they eventually sacrifice users' well-being for practical purposes like funding, and at that point they become no better than the platforms they replaced. The cycle of exploitation continues.

There are communities online that have preserved their community culture and have not resorted to unethical practices to maintain themselves for more than 20 years, they are always smaller more intentional communities that value quality interactions over quantity of users. Given all the evidence showing how mentally and socially harmful large centralized platforms are - should we really aspire to recreate those unhealthy spaces in the fediverse?

The fediverse is an opportunity to take things a different direction, a direction in which smaller more cohesive communities share with each other without any one community dominating and suffocating the others. Federation is a fundamentally different model that challenges the centralizing paradigm "growth is good".

The 9to5 article is poorly written. In the first paragraph 9to5 says a new window system is "scheduled to replace" the current one, but this is not true. The cited blog post explicitly says "There’s no timeline or roadmap at this stage". The Gnome developers are merely experimenting with a new window management system and at this early stage it's impossible to know what the finished product may look like if these experiments go anywhere at all.

Here's a link to the original blog post where Gnome developer Tobias Bernard explains their dissatisfaction with existing window management systems and discusses the techinical challeneges developers face.

Police spend most of their time on routine traffic stops, and routine traffic stops could be eliminated by transit and walkable infrastructure. It's almost like it's a racket...

Until humanity is mature enough to stop exploiting, poisoing, and destroying everything in our path it seems best that we quarantine on Earth imo. There is so much possibility down here as soon as we stop trying to run away from home and we bloom where we're planted instead.

In the US it is normal and expected to eat meat and animal products 3-5 times per day with every meal and snack. If popular culture can shift to consuming meat and animal products 3-5 times per week that would be an ~80% reduction with minimal sacrifice.

These days it's not the tremendous change it used to be - there are at least a dozen brands of vegan meat replacements for sausages, chicken, roasts, burgers, etc. It's fairly easy to find vegan pastries, cakes, cookies, ice creams, etc. It is not as if people will need to suddenly start eating salad for every meal, if we only eat meat once per day that alone is a massive and achievable change.

Vegans today sacrifice less than ever before, and we have all those who went vegan decades ago (the hard way!) to thank for that.

All too often I think the discussion misses the fact that there is no alternative to driving for the vast majority of US citizens. Busses, trains, walking, biking, etc are not viable options because US infrastructure & city planning overwhelmingly neglects everything but the automobile.

It is supposedly a personal moral failing every time someone drives too old, too tired, or too impaired, but if trains, busses, & walking were the default ways to get around then this chronic societal problem would diminish dramatically. Careful, there's very little that separates you from those you wish to disenfranchise.

You might want to check out Anthony Ray Hinton's The Sun Does Shine for a memoir of what it's like to be wrongfully sentenced to prison for nearly 30 years all because your friend was mad at you over a girl.

There's also the case of Crystal Mason who's in prison, right now, despite comitting no crime.

Profit and Punishment: How America Criminalizes the Poor in the Name of Justice by Pulitzer prize winner Tony Messenger is a more comprehensive book, but one that I think every US citizen should read before defending the status quo.

Criminal justice reform is extraordinarily difficult in the US because citizens with first hand experience are disenfranchised. Everyone affected by society should have an equitable voice in society - there should be no disenfranchised underclass.

Yes. A superficial search yielded this article citing the American Bar Association as stating 98% of federal criminal cases end in a plea bargain - confession in exchange for a lesser sentence.

Many solid defenses never go to trial because the accused does not have the resources to fight the charge. Many of those individuals who plea guilty will lose their right to vote. The books cited in my previous comment provide more compelling statistics and case studies showing that any one of us can easily find ourselves in trouble with the law, in over our heads, and eager to take the path of least resistance back to a "normal" life.

Did you know that you can donate your computer's spare computational power to scientific research? (sopuli.xyz)

Help find genes correlated with cancer, map the galaxies, or develop an open-source covid therapeutic. Whatever area of science you are interested in, there is a BOINC project you can participate in. Some of them (like the black hole database) will even credit you for your findings!...
