Also nein Danke. Euer EherVielleicht.

I did it, I distro hopped

I told myself I wasn’t gonna do it anytime soon but I distro hopped from Endeavour OS to Arch with Hyprland in the span of 3 days. Nothing against endeavour. I just tried to customize, broke some stuff and decided to try Hyprland again. I’m quite liking it. It takes awhile to get used to it but it’s fun. I cloned a repo...

Desktop environment is like traditional windows desktop, everything included. It has stuff like notification daemons, advanced settings, toolbars, task manager and so on.

Window manager let’s you manage windows but often doesn’t have it’s own toolbar, notification demon, task manager and other things. People who run window managers are picking their own toolbar software, their own notification daemon and so on. They want a much more customizable personal experience, often heavily themed as well. Usually a window manager is also faster than a desktop environment since it does less things.

Compositor is what gives drop shadows, transparency and other visual effects. Its often built into desktop environments but is often missing from window managers, but not always. When it’s missing, people install one of their own. There are a few popular choices.

Examples of desktop environments: Gnome, KDE Example of window managers: Sway, Hyprland, i3, xfce, awesome wm

OC Entirely Automated AI-Powered Balanced News Site*

For the last few months our team has been working on an entirely automated AI-powered news site. I am excited to announce that v1.0 is finally being released. This version includes full coverage with every article generated from 2 left leaning, 2 right leaning, and 2 neutral sources. We have also added an anonymous commenting...

cakeistheanswer,

Well this is the most dystopian thing I’ve seen today. The RFK article alone is a single right leaning source quoted twice and does 0 analysis on any claim.

If you fundamentally believe quoting NBC and the NY post is useful as ‘both sides’, I think you’re a shame to your name, or beyond sheltered.

I’m not even endorsing it, but if you want at least a veneer of lefty opinions start with Jacobin, they’re the ideological opposite of Fox news if there is one. And even on the worst day the content is better sourced.

Quoting fox news and NPR is useful if you have something to add, or analyze, not scrape and then provide no direct quotes.

You want an actually useful AI project? Take every direct word from public speeches and fact check it from public/govt DBs.

Economic inequality cannot be explained by individual bad choices, study finds (phys.org)

A global study led by a researcher at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health and published in the journal Scientific Reports finds that economic inequality on a social level cannot be explained by bad choices among the poor nor by good decisions among the rich. Poor decisions were the same across all income groups,...

What I like about ernest is how he hasn't denied genocide (so far)

[AMA] Hi, I’m /u/spez, CEO of Reddit, coming to you to talk about my recent acquisition of Lemmy and some upcoming changes. Ask me anything!

Thanks for joining me today! I’m here at the Reddit corporate parking lot, spot 269 (nice!), and being assisted today by Victoria all by myself because friends only tie down your ambitions....

Nomecks,

If you were in a room with Elon Musk, Donald Trump and Adolf Hitler, could you stop fellating yourself long enough to give disappointing blowjobs to all your heroes?

Kichae, (edited )

If those video-heavy communities want to host their own instances and cover the cost of hosting those videos, then that would be cool.

The thing with individual- and community-based hosting, though, is that the hidden costs of the social web become visible very quickly. Those were externalized to the VC backed vultures, and now those vultures are clamping down on us and demanding their fill.

We paid a price for things like free video hosting. Now we're aware of the costs and need to make conscious decisions around it, not friction free ones.

So apparently youtube, or its comment system, is against the fediverse

Over the time new youtube videos crop up talking about reddit, twitch and twitter issues. And in those comment sections I always like to spread the word of alternatives (like the fediverse). But whenever I do, those comments get quietly removed even though they seem to be posted in the first place....

Youtube removes posts with links in them, try posting without them and the comment should stay up.
