I was going through this wonderful thread lemmy.ml/post/4540882 and found many of you talking about discord as it’s a crime against knowledge for not allowing indexing on it. I think we are talking about indexing by search engines like DDG and Google here and I know that discord questions don’t show up in search results and...
I use my desktop PC for Jellyfin and torrenting, but I’m looking for something that I can keep on 24/7 that draws less power and run other self-hosted services on Linux. I would like to have at least 2x 14 TB 3.5" hard drives in or attached to it with the possibility of expanding in the future....
Can you talk a bit more about the CPU benchmarking? What sites do you usually refer to? Is score the best metric or do you look for something else as well?
I am very new into this chat applications and read about IRC and Matrix. Matrix seems its more new and modern. So I just wonder what’s the reason you are still using IRC?
What is everyone using for their logging solution? So far I’ve not really done anything and just tail the container log when something is going wrong but a more long term, robust log aggregator would be great....
I love outline as much as the next guy, but calling it simple to selfhost is a bit of a stretch. It has lots of moving parts and not having an auth solution built-in makes it not suitable for the average user.
That said, it does beat other wiki solutions by a wide margin!
Wasn’t sure where to ask this but figured people here host their own rss platforms. I just started with miniflux. Between that and reeder it makes RSS nice and easy....
Since bitwarden is a VC funded company, I'm wary of the enshittification that might take place in the future. Even though technically speaking, you can self-host the server via Vaultwarden, it is largely possible because the project has blessing of official devs. That can change dramatically in future.
For something as important as your passwords, trusting a for-profit company might not be the best idea.
Would love to know what the community thinks about this.
DISCLAIMER: I love Bitwarden and use it daily, both for personal use and at work.
Maybe I’m using the wrong terms, but what I’m wondering is if people are running services at home that they’ve made accessible from the internet. I.e. not open to the public, only so that they can use their own services from anywhere....
I currently use a Droplet from DigitalOcean which gives me 1 gb of RAM, 25 gb of storage and a bandwidth limit of 1 TB which is priced at 6 dollars per month, I think this might be a good offer, but I also think I’m overpaying because the only thing that I use from that is Wireguard to get around CGNAT at my home (which I...
Came across Bookwyrm which is the feediverse alternative to Goodreads. I've been searching for a proper Goodreads replacement for so long, and this finally looks like the real deal.
I have been using Twitter primarily for interesting technology discussions, and lately realized that lot of people in my following list have shifted platforms. Some have landed on Substack while others Bluesky. Would love to see the lay of the land there.
Hate discord with a passion. I don't know why all the "new-age" open-source projects are also moving to Discord as their primary forum. The search is abysmal, there's no way to go back to previous postings in a sane manner.
I reluctantly use discord because some of my favorite application developers use that (Immich, Omnivore, Logseq) but it's just a massive pain in the ass and every time I spend even 10 minutes there, it feels like I've spent hours looking into the dark mayhem, searching for a needle in the haystack.
I've been backing up to a dedicated hard disk within the same server for all my backups in case my disks fail. And as I run more and more services, the concern of disks failures grow bigger....
Omnivore is the free, open source, read-it-later app for serious readers. I'm looking into setting up this read-it-later service. I have a lot of URLs saved in my browser and need a place to bookmark them as well. Thinking this is a good place to start....
I've been using Omnivore for the past few months and really like it so far. A great wallabag replacement, although it still can't be easily selfhosted and there are a few components which rely on Google Cloud Functions to work. Would love to see if someone manages to selfhost it successfully.
AFAIK, it can be selfhosted with a few of the features (like newsletter processing, which requires Google Cloud Functions) disabled. Nobody has made a full-fledged guide for selhosting though. A couple of people in discord were successful in self-hosting it.
I use espial, an open-source clone of Pinboard. I had fallen in love with the simple yet powerful design of Pinboard and wanted an open-source version of it which I could selfhost. Using espial for the past 2 years and it's been amazing. The tag cloud feature is pretty cool and you can add your own notes about the links that you've saved.
This question is especially for people who have joined in the last week. Have you used other fediverse platforms or is this your first time really using one? What do you think of it so far? Are you aware that you can comment on Lemmy posts with a Mastodon account?
First time "seriously" using the feediverse. After the twitter implosion, I tried out Mastodon for a few days, but alas, the network effect and switching costs were too real for me. My twitter was tech and startup heavy and even though you might expect the people there to be much more savvy and inclined to use the feediverse, I was surprised to see the reality. Very few people actually jumped the ship and consequently I had to remain on Twitter to gain value.
Now that it's reddit's turn to implode, I'm much more hopeful of people settling on some other service (which is not centralized). Came across kbin from a post on reddit, liked the philosophy and the vibe of the place and here I am, posting from one of the kbin instances. I'm looking forward to setup my own instance soon!
I just saw an email from Buy Me a Coffee. Not just one. I went in, and I'm truly shocked. Thank you all for the support; I would like to thank each and every one of you individually someday. Honestly, I don't know what to say. The account balance is $350, which will definitely allow me to develop kbin faster or at least not...
Solid advice! I'd also like to chime in and recommend that apart from keeping the official server alive so that new users can come in, please prioritize on making it easier for other developers to start contributing to the codebase and setting up new instances.
I love the way people are supporting you and the way this project has been shaping up. Best wishes!
Is there no way to index discord chats? Is Matrix a viable discord alternative?

I’m currently using 1Password but I’m no longer satisfied with it.

Any self-hosted alternative to Readwise?
I love their offerings and wanted to see if there's anything similar which is open source.
Recommend me a good and cheap VPS.
