Context: "Or... here's a wild idea... let instances do what they want? If an instance wants to act the fool or allow trolls to overrun their space, then another instance can choose to not want anything to do with it."

I also edited to add "If you simply don't jive with how one instance does things, you can [defederate from them] too. And if I don't like that, I can move."

I deleted my comment because... hey, I'm not on lemmy.world, so this doesn't affect me.

Hey, I agree with you BTW. That's kinda how the Fediverse works. I don't need access to everything and everything doesn't need access to me-- and that's true for everybody.

That's why I stuck around, I guess. If I really want to access an instance that badly, there's always RSS.

Yup. And it's been a thing. I'll go as far to say that Mastodon has a racism problem.

My first move is to just block-- individuals, and whole instances if need be. Hell, I'm quick to block instances anyway! The Internet is vast; I don't need access to every instance nor give every one a chance. I'll report if I feel like it'll do anything.

It also helps when you're on an instance that takes this sort of thing seriously-- you need Mods That Actually Do Something. Furthermore, there are tags you can follow to keep up on what to block, at your discretion.

As much as I love Mastodon, I do have to admit its shortcomings, and that I'm more tech-savvy than I give myself credit for-- finding (and moving) instances turned out to be just a mild annoyance instead of a whole ordeal.

My use case is not the same as the laypersons. Where I stayed, they understandably grew frustrated and gave up.

Lemmy.ml and beehaw.org getting hammered with traffic because of spez ama

Both were down for me before, they seem to be up right now but just made this account on Lemmy.blahaj.zone (Henry is the name of my actual blahaj lol). It's probably because of the traffic influx from reddit refugees from the absolutely disastrous spez ama (where he doubles down on everything and doesn't apologize at all)....

I went back to Mastodon. Had to move my account twice more to find an instance a) I really gelled with, b) took the safety of marginalized people seriously, and c) did not hesitate to pushback against the hateful stuff.

It's been pretty nice.
