Lack of rage bait

Something here felt different, and I think I realized what.

Content here, at least from my experience so far, is not rage baity. When I go to Reddit it does not take long time until I get to some post that I go into and read because it makes me angry, or people in comments make me angry (and I have a need to engage to bark at the moon).

Here most of content I read because legit interest. Hope it stays this way.

You're absolutely right, everything's so civil here that the moment someone is remotely hostile to anyone it stands out like a sore thumb. Reddit was hell in some places in this regard, one word against the general consensus and everyone piles on you like you're a terrorist.

And that's without mentioning people who are there clearly just to stir up arguments, I don't know how so many people don't realize this. The "old" saying "don't feed the troll" has been forgotten by a big portion of the internauts.

Yep hostile is the perfect way to describe Reddit.

The "old" saying "don't feed the troll" has been forgotten by a big portion of the internauts.

I'm not sure they ever knew it in the first place!

But never mind now, we're here and we can finally relax.

That is supposed to be “feed the old troll donuts”

retronautickz,

This is one of the things I like the most about the fediverse in general. People who only wants negative engagement are hard to come by and easy to avoid.

And even if lemmy/kbin grows so much that that kind of users start to migrate from reddit to any of those platforms, it's posible to block the users or even defederate their instances, because if they keep that attitude it will reach the point that only instances that are already massively defederated for their behaviour will accept them, or they will be forced to form their own instances, that will promptly get defederated.

In centralised social media, this kind of people and behaviour are almost imposible to avoid because their algorithms are designed to promote that kind of engagement.

It's not a bug, but a very welcome feature... for now at least. Let's see what the future has for us.

I felt that way on Twitter, and I became depressed years ago. And now I know I should have given up trying to force others to change their minds.

I think the federated-decentralized SNS will help keeping such ugly situation apart from me.

The nice thing is it'll be so much easier to avoid the toxicity wince the fediverse is so flexible

m/mildlyinfuriating has arrived! :D Jokes aside, I hope it stays this way, OP.

I hope it stays this way, over the years my feed on reddit has slowly been overcome by ragebait (I'm looking at you /r/gamingcirclejerk), and I've gotten sick and tired of seeing screenshots of hateful comments get posted and massively upvoted. Seems like everyone over here is pretty positive though, so I'm hopeful!

I'll enjoy the peace while it lasts. If/when the Fediverse becomes mainstream, psyops and ragebait and disinformation will migrate over because there's always someone who can profit from it. :(

Hopefully the fact that we can defederate/block/silence/suspend will slow it down considerably.

Reddit was like that in the early days. Once this gets more popular, all the problems of Reddit will crop up too. Let's hope kbin can find the balance between being economically viable and having to drive engagement at the cost of quality.

    HandsHurtLoL,

Except that reddit only became that way as a function of user experience redesign and other feature roll outs. If it had stayed clunky and hideous, it probably would have never taken off among the Facebook crowd, y'know?

So, while yes, some kinks need to be smoothed out in kbin, let's keep the display here as basic as possible. Let's keep the Fediverse scary-sounding. Lol

    I know! It's terrible! Rage-inducing! 🤬

Though, I have to agree with @iNeedScissors67, it's good to see this as an opportunity to stay away from that kind of junk.

I also hope it stays that way, but it's definitely nice being in "at the ground floor" so that I can block Magazines that I have no interest in, that way the rage bait will never make it to me. I do sub to some news mags because I prefer to get my news in this format so I'm bound to see some, but that's the price of trying to be informed. It'll be nice not to have the usual rage bait right on the top of the popular feed, like antiwork, AITA, and a ton of others that were clearly full of writing prompts just to rile people up and garner a specific type of reaction. My front page looks pretty nice right now but I'm excited to see some more content as kbin grows.
