Why does it seem different platforms of the fediverse are not so good at communicating with each other? Is this something that will eventually improve?

I have an account on kbin. Recently I saw a post across my feed in which a magazine that I follow (that's based on a Lemmy instance) was celebrating over 1k subscribers. When I visited, I saw only 240 or so....

Are any of your friends on the fediverse too? If not, have you tried to get them to join?

I’ve been telling a lot of people about it, but everyone’s a skeptic. I’ve heard a lot of people saying that they’re just going to wait to see which Reddit clone comes out on top before switching. Most of them haven’t heard of the other parts of the fediverse like mastodon. I’d like to leave fb/instagram, but like...

For those that are, how are you keeping track of tropical weather this year?

Last year I used a combination of r/hurricane, weather underground pro, and my weather radar pro. I am wanting to forgo Reddit for obvious reasons, and wondering if any one knows of any good fediverse sources, and or better apps. Also this is my first post after lurking a bit, and a few comments.

Self-checkout theft causing problems for retailers — and shoppers who despise receipt checks (www.cbc.ca)

I started using grocery self-checkouts during COVID, but I’ve kept using them because there’s rarely a line (and I’m a misanthrope). I’d probably go back to using regular human checkouts if I had to dig through all my crap to prove what I bought....
