/kbin server update - or how the server didn't blow up

Currently, on the main instance, people have created 40191 accounts (+214 marked as deleted). I don't know how many are active because I don't monitor it, but once again, I greet all of you here :) In recent days, the traffic on the website has been overwhelming. It's definitely too much for the basic docker-compose setup,...

Thanks for your transparency and hard work! Loving the site and looking forward to it getting even better!

Hi /kbin! I'm currently working on a small browser extension for /kbin users.

This extension helps users subscribed to Lemmy communities by adding an icon before mentions or URLs related to other communities. These mentions can be in the format "!communityname" or through URLs like "https://lemmy.ml/c/memes"....

Are rat posts ok? (reddthat.com)

This is Obama and Trump (I'll let you guess who's who), my first two rattos. They really opened my mind to the concept that pretty much every animal has a unique personality and temperament. I had to put them both down at different times due to ill health; another thing I quickly learned about rats. Still, we thoroughly enjoyed...

Love rats! But after being gutted losing two mischiefs, my heart just can't take owning them anymore (or maybe they owned me??). Love to see them on my... dash? Are calling it a dash?

Yeah, now that the bike isn’t brand new anymore, I do feel a bit that maybe I’m being overprotective, to my own detriment.

Yeah, I’ve got a mid-range Abus U/D lock, and a Kryptonite New York Noose chain. Probably should stop worrying so much about it, but it’s hard to accept maybe losing that much money!

It’s mainly errands that I’m concerned about — same as you, I’ve got secure indoor storage at home and work. But I find myself reluctant to take it on errands versus Uber or transit, because of that risk of losing it.

Clearly I need to get over it! Haha.

Oh, that's cool. Looks useful! One thing that intrigues me most about Unix systems is how configurable they seem to be.

I've given it a try for a solo instance, spinning it up on a Digital Ocean droplet -- but I think I messed up the configuration. So I figured I'd wait until there's better documentation, as more people (who are way better at this stuff than me!) figure it out.

That said, I'm happy to help contribute to the documentation once I understand it myself, but I'm really just a tech dilettante.

Excited to see this community spring up! I just got started with Pop!_OS (and my first real machine) on an old Pro 3. I'm impressed that the screen and everything still works!

Looking forward to learning some tips and tricks!

@Darkrai Thanks for pointing it out!

Toronto to Explore Amendment of Canadian Constitution that would recognize and enshrine certain City of Toronto Authorities (secure.toronto.ca)

Passed today by the city council (16 to 5) was a motion asking for a report on amending the constitution to recognize Toronto as some sort of entity, limiting the degree to which the city would be subject to the provinces whims going forwards....

Would love to see a Province of Toronto, but if Charter Toronto is a better possibility, I'll take it! Anything to keep us from continuing to be a "creature of the province" that seems to hate us.

I have zero need for a cargo bike, but I can never quite seem to stop dreaming of them...

Wild! Wonder how that thing handles compared to a more common bakfiet-style.

How is Toronto construction impacting your commute downtown? Check out our map | CBC News (www.cbc.ca)

Downtown Toronto normally sees a lot of construction projects each summer, but this year there's a big addition. So how is the city managing congestion? CBC Toronto went looking for answers about what’s being done and what other solutions might help keep the city moving.
