jurrasicjonn,

Are you also getting the feeling that this was the intention the whole time? To "clean house" as it were and cause an exodus by certain people they deemed to be...freeloading...or not conducive to their future bottom line? Those who tend to have a negative impact (or drag) on their advertising and investor pools?

Because that's been my feeling all along.

jurrasicjonn,

Die. And be reborn as something sane, run by people who care.

Linus Torvalds -- Creator of Linux -- defends gun regulation, woke communists, womens rights AND trans rights. Linux is political! (cdn.masto.host)

Linus' thread: (CW: bigotry and racism in the comments) https://social.kernel.org/notice/AWSXomDbvdxKgOxVAm (you need to scroll down, i can't seem to link to the comment in the screenshot)

@morgthorak I think you might want to make sure you don’t follow me.

Because your “woke communist propaganda” comment makes me think you’re a moron of the first order.

I strongly suspect I am one of those “woke communists” you worry about. But you probably couldn’t actually explain what either of those words actually mean, could you?

I’m a card-carrying atheist, I think a woman’s right to choose is very important, I think that “well regulated militia” means that guns should be carefully licensed and not just randomly given to any moron with a pulse, and I couldn’t care less if you decided to dress up in the “wrong” clothes or decided you’d rather live your life without feeling tied to whatever plumbing you were born with.

And dammit, if that all makes me “woke”, then I think anybody who uses that word as a pejorative is a f*cking disgrace to the human race. So please just unfollow me right now.
jurrasicjonn,

This is exactly what I was thinking as well. Why is it so hard for folks to separate what someone creates from the creator? If we found out the person who created, say, the bandaid, was a militant Nazi homophobe who advocated for marriage at the age of 6, should we feel guilty every time we need to cover a cut or scrape?

Personally, I don't know much at all about Linus, what he prefers for breakfast, whether he wears slippers in the house or goes barefoot, and so on. He could staunchly advocate that my country do away with its present form of government and declare him dictator for life for all I care.

I like Linux. I use Linux. It gets the job done. End of story.

Wireless cameras that don't spy on you like Ring?

I rent so I cannot set up a wired system. I need two of them and preferably they'd be okay in severe weather. Thunderstorms are common in spring / autumn as is severe weather including tornadoes. In fact my house nearly got hit by one two months ago. Fun times. Summers are hot and sometimes humid. Currently 90s. Triple digits...

jurrasicjonn,

All my cameras are cheap wireless webcams with absolutely no ability to communicate outside the local network. They connect to a home built Linux system that I vetted personally.

Honestly, it's not that hard. But most folks don't know that or care. They just want to buy, plug in, and go. That the device they brought into their home and just attached to the same network that has all their photos, access to bank accounts, etc might be a spy device doesn't even occur to them.

Every single Amazon Ring employee was able to access every single customer video, even when it wasn't necessary for their jobs. (www.malwarebytes.com)

Amazon's Ring cameras were allegedly used by employees and third-party contractors to spy on customers. The FTC has filed a complaint against Amazon, which may result in a $5.8 million settlement. Employees had unrestricted access to customer videos and could download, save, and share them. Some employees abused this access,...

jurrasicjonn,

Ditto. It's for this very reason that I create my own "smart devices" which only have the ability to communicate locally inside my network. When I need to reach them, I do it via a VPN that uses high encryption and specifically tailored non-standard settings.

Trust off the shelf stuff likely made in China inside my home? Uh...that's a big fat NOPE.
