Job hunting morale

It’s been months now. I’ve been applying to dozens of jobs per day, adjusting my application to the position, working with agencies, getting feedback from recruiters, trying to network, improving my skills, volunteering as a research coordinator, etc. I’ve had interviews but unfortunately haven’t received any offers. I...

Same boat… even applied at Target for seasonal work prior to holidays and nothing…

10 years of military/healthcare service and 3 years of data analysis experience. Nothing. Anywhere. It’s getting kind of brutal just to survive now.

I would go back to school but my last university screwed me out of my GI Bill by submitting paperwork late and not telling me. Months later I get mail from VA saying I owe them a thousand dollars for a course I dropped after the cut off, even though I had dropped it in time. Without a job I had now way to pay it back, and now I’m pretty sure I can’t use what’s left.

As Joshua trees burn, massive wildfire threatens to forever alter Mojave Desert (www.latimes.com)

“We’ve lost a huge area of native vegetation,” said Debra Hughson, deputy superintendent for the Mojave National Preserve. “A lot of pinyon [pines], junipers gone forever, and a lot of the Joshua trees, likely.”...

I’ve been out there before when I was in wildland fire with BLM, one of the issues with the Preserve is (and issue meaning making things more difficult, not that it’s a bad thing in general) there’s a very strict ban on vehicles going anywhere besides premade roads/trails.

That means that instead of like most fires in this type of fuel where engines can drive up and directly attack it, it’s a hiking game. And even then there is strict rules about what kind of damage you can do to the area. In any other area this would a straight forward, put dozer line in, have crews start burning, and engines start mobile attacking areas they can get to. That’s why seeing fires like this sucks, because I know the crew (if they haven’t all left yet) from the Mojave National Preserve, and I know they’d want to do more to stop it.

Wasteful Days of High School Girls, when I need a good laugh it’s my go to.

I randomly discovered it on HIDIVE a while back, but it’s been taken off since then.

Thanks! That does make sense. I consider myself fairly tech savvy-ish, and use several programming languages for work, so this totally makes sense (all day long with the "how to ___ in R/Python/SQL" lol). However, I am sure without this bit of advice I probably would have done exactly that then followed by getting frustrated after the 10th tab I opened didn't give me the right answer yet.

Thanks for the advice, I will look into it.

And that is one thing I have been looking for, I just couldn't think of the right words for google to give the answer... Thanks so much!

That is one of the reasons I am making the jump. With them closing out support for 21H2, even though I am on 22H2, it's only a matter of time before they pull the sneaky, "Oh, we updated this for you! You are so very welcome! Enjoy Windows 11 against your will!" like they have in the past. So, best to see if I prefer linux long term.

Thanks for the info, I will check it out.

I have used WSL in vscode for other things, and have set up Homeassistant using rasp pi, but this is the first time that I am actually going to be using Linux as an OS. I heard a lot of great things about PopOS, so glad to hear so many good experiences people have had with it.

As I say, when in doubt, read the Docs. It has saved my ass on numerous occasions to read the docs, then if I don't understand something still, at least I can narrow down where the issue might be for google, or rather, the stackoverflow searcher that also includes results from other places lol

maythebananabewithyo,
maythebananabewithyo avatar

Yeah, that was another big concern for a LONG time about switching to Linux. I remember hearing about Linux years and years and years ago when basically nothing was really compatible. It's come a long way, so now is as good a time as any to jump in.

Luckily someone else posted a website to check for alternative programs, so that also helps a lot.

maythebananabewithyo,
maythebananabewithyo avatar

I see, though I use OneDrive, I'm not terribly concerned with that, for now, I hope. lol We will see.

maythebananabewithyo,
maythebananabewithyo avatar

Yeah, I am big on reading documentation. It has saved my ass quite a bit. Even if it doesn't give me the answer I need, or I don't quite get it still, it at least lets me hone in on what the potential issue is so I can clarify my search a bit better. I will keep that in mind, thanks!

That’s not really what I meant. I think it’s great to decentralize. However, I think that right now everyone in the federated side of things are all flocking to one community on one server, which I get is supposed to happen. But my point really is, that leaves a lot of servers with barren wastelands of communities, where here, once federated, we will have more options.

We can chose to move out to federated communities, but we can also kick it on our home instance for those that would rather do that. It makes things a bit more inclusive imo. That’s all.

I’m all for getting the party started and connecting to communities all over the place. That’s why I prefer Kbin to begin with. Once it’s rolling it connects to everything, not just Lemmy. Which is super fantastic. I’m really excited for the walls to come down in the next few days.

maythebananabewithyo,
maythebananabewithyo avatar

I 100% agree, I just think I may have worded it wrong. I’m super excited for when everything starts connecting. I prefer Kbin for that reason to begin with. It will connect with Lemmy, Mastodon, even Guppee (I think it’s called) where I already have an eye on a community I want to join there.

I just think that having a strong home instance also promotes inclusivity for those who may not quite grasp that idea yet. They can still participate at their rate in their home instance and in time stretch their legs out. In servers that already are federated, they don’t have that option. They HAVE to go where everyone is flocking until things break up into smaller places. That can be daunting for those just getting on board, as many posts here have shared concern about.

It’s a matter of having more options to interact how you want, where you want. If that makes more sense?

maythebananabewithyo,
maythebananabewithyo avatar

And again I agree with you lol. It’s not how you are explaining things, more so that I think I’m sucking at explaining them myself. You are explaining things well, which is why I can agree with you.

So, my thoughts on this are, again based around a strong home instance. For example, say the biggest community for a certain topic is on a server that gets unfederated. The users from our server will know that they can always fall back on the magazine here and not worry about it disappearing.

Which ties into your point of minimizing consequences. That said, the points you are making are exactly how I feel, but maybe a tiny bit different in their approach. I hope that makes sense, English is my first language and I still suck at explaining thing haha.

maythebananabewithyo,
maythebananabewithyo avatar

Hmm. I honestly didn't realize that. That's interesting. You would think that it would just pop the community up and what is there is there, but I can also see how that would be the case, as well. Thanks for informing me of that tidbit.

To add to what @atocci said, Kbin is literally an infant compared to Lemmy. It’s been public around a month. I think a lot of people jumped in thinking it was more established than what it was and are underestimating what it can do once it come back up fully.

The dev who made Kbin probably had no idea this would ever happen, so just give it time to get the kinks worked out. In the meantime, standby to standby.

maythebananabewithyo,
maythebananabewithyo avatar

Interesting. On IPhone you can, so it's weird that you can't on Pixel.

maythebananabewithyo,
maythebananabewithyo avatar

I think that is temporary while cloudflare is up. Once that comes down, then it will be wide open to talk to everyone everywhere like you can on Lemmy.

OC Some ramblings about the future

Tbh, this has been on my mind for the past two days, so I hope you guys don't mind if I unload it here. I tend to obsess and I figure if no one cares, then at least I can get it out of my head instead of thinking about it all the time. Also sorry for the length, I promise I have a doctor's note....

Maybe not a merge, but "multi-reddit" type experience where you can subscribe to the multi-feed for a genre of communities and then unsubscribe from ones you don't want. Like, a gaming multi that would have all the top-level c/gaming, and things like gaming news communities, or multis based on all nintendo related communities or ps4 related or whatever.

Like if there could be a tag system where mods can tag their subreddits main theme (maybe from a list populated by matching, like "nintendo' and "Nintendo Games" would correct to "Nintendo" like what I have seen on LinkedIn for selecting job industries when you put in "marketing" it corrects it to "Advertising Services" or something. Then the tag would be the multi-community hub.

maythebananabewithyo,
maythebananabewithyo avatar

I think the key would be that unlike Reddit, where it would be anyone can create a multi-community, it would be up to the mods to tag it then all the back end would do is collect all the communities tagged with that into one multi. When it comes to more niche things, like you pointed out, I think that those things would eventually start evolving organically over time.

But an upside on your down side, say your favorite band is Scottish rock band Texas. They have a sub that is tagged Scottish Bands, you go "huh, let me subscribe to that," and now you found 5 more Scottish rock bands that are similar to Texas that you really dig and have great communities but are all on separate instances across the fediverse.
