Contramuffin,

What I like to say is that the universe is interesting enough as it is without needing to make anything up. Perhaps ghosts and demons and cryptids don’t exist, but what about dark matter and dark energy? They make up the majority of the universe and we don’t know what they are. Why did the Big Bang happen? What’s inside a black hole? Are there aliens out there? How the heck are we even alive?

A big part of science is acknowledging that we really kind of don’t know a lot about the world around us. Scientists regularly find things that just make us think, “Wait a second, this shouldn’t have been possible…” Just because there are some things that we do know, doesn’t mean that we know everything. And likely, we won’t be able to know everything, even in the far future. It’s ok to want a bit of mysticism! In fact, science encourages you to dream big and think about what sorts of things haven’t been discovered yet. But there’s too many dreams and too many undiscovered things, and you need to pick and choose which things to get excited about.

Why get excited about demons when you can discover where the demons came from and which group of humans named them? Why get excited about cryptids when 90% of species are still undiscovered and the ocean trenches are virtually completely unexplored? In the same vein that a friend who responds to your messages is more interesting than a friend who ghosts you, wouldn’t it also be true that a field that promises real unknowns and consistent discoveries is more interesting than a field that maybe, possibly might have discoveries?

To put it bluntly, if you think science isn’t full of unknowns and hopes and dreams, then you’re not digging deep enough!

Prosecutors: Trump Mar-a-Lago security aide flipped after changing lawyers (www.politico.com)

A Trump employee who monitored security cameras at Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate abruptly retracted his earlier grand jury testimony and implicated Trump and others in obstruction of justice just after switching from an attorney paid for by a Trump political action committee to a lawyer from the federal defender’s office...

For Nvidia, your best bet is Pop_OS, as it has the Nvidia drivers prepackaged. I wouldn’t mess with arch for gaming especially if you’re new to Linux - you’d need to do a lot of tweaking to get it right.

This is a spot on observation. There's a guy on TikTok that talks about healthy masculinity that really resonates with me and talks about this exact phenomenon and how it harms us all. The video I link here really nails it. He puts into words what I've always felt. His examples are based in politics, and his expansion is based on interpersonal relationships.

"If you can't state the opposite position of your position in good faith, then you don't know who you are. You only know who you wish you were."

Huge caveat, though: this only works when speaking to people in good faith. And it isn't always easy to spot when someone is speaking in good faith or in bad faith, especially when we're talking about subjects that effect us directly. The quote about anti-Semites not being unaware of the absurdity of their comments comes to mind.

When you tinker and debug something on windows, you usually have little idea of what went wrong and can derive very little from the experience. At least that was the case back when I still used windows, in the XP and vista days.

I don’t think that is completely fair, I feel like the reason is more that on Linux no easy to follow “solutions” to as many problems as on Windows exist. When you have a problem on Linux you most of the time have to dive deeply into the technical details. On windows it’s often enough to search for a solution on the internet and follow the first tutorial (not the stupid SEO garbage sites). And once whatever problem you had is gone you don’t go and try to understand why the solution worked.

That also really annoyed me a lot when I had to fix Windows problems for work, because I really like to understand why something is working or not. And after some research I actually found Sysinternals which are tools that help you dig deeper into Windows inner workings. There are also some wonderful videos on how to use those tools available by the author of those tools. And there are also books available both on how to troubleshoot with the tools and on how Windows internally works.

Edit: fiexd tyops ;)

It baffles me how people seem fixated on the gamification of a discussion and payment system, as if somehow we're not adults who can see that the servers cost money, they provide us value, and we should help defray the costs (directly, through donations/payments). Clear/transparent information on instance costs and available funding is all we really need. For the instance owners it would be nice to have some built in code to provide this as a common location so they can disseminate the info with as little additional effort as possible, ideally with hooks to several payment systems they can connect - esp given the global nature of the platform.

TrenchcoatFullofBats,

You need 2 indexers (in case one goes down temporarily) and two providers with different backbones - one primary and one to backfill if all portions of the file you want aren’t available on your primary.

Here’s a good overview of Usenet backbones. For example, Newsdemon with Eweka is a decent combo.

This all works best with an *arr stack + SABnzbd. *arr apps will connect to the indexers so you can find stuff to download when you search for something - for example, Sonarr for TV shows.

When a file that meets your requirements is found, Sonarr will download the nzb file and put it in a directory that SAB watches. SAB then downloads the file and puts it in “completed” directory that Sonarr watches.

Sonarr then moves the file to that TV show’s directory, which your media player (like Jellyfin) watches, and then it shows up there for you to enjoy.

If you get everything dialed right, it works perfectly and is super reliable.

I get why all the sites are getting shittier (interest rates etc etc) -- but why are they all getting shittier in the same shitty dumb way?

it’s never just ads or subscriptions, it’s a shitty integrated fucking garbage algoritm driven with content you don’t want to see shown to you, the interface is ALWAYS shittier and worse, no explanation, just that it looks ‘modern’...
