As you noticed, I had to temporarily enable DDoS protection. Someone is trying quite effectively to distract me from my activities ;p Unfortunately, this may cause some issues with the federation. I will try to cut off the traffic as soon as possible and return to normal operation. Thank you for all your support and patience! :)
I’m a bit confused as to what platform I should look to for my exodus from Reddit. First we have Lemmy which is a direct Reddit alternative. Then we have kbin which is ALSO is own Reddit alternative AND portal to Lemmy/Mastodon. Finally we have Mastodon which is the well established Twitter alternative that doesn’t really...
I'm currently on kbin and it really is just preference which one you stick with. Like you said, Kbin and Lemmy can communicate with one another. Kbin has more features and better integration with Mastodon, but Lemmy is a simpler platform that isn't as confusing to get used to.
When you say 'communicate', does that mean posts here will be visible on Lemmy and vice-versa?
Yup! I saw your post from Kbin.
Would you think, then, that Lemmy will have more users than kbin due to the simplicity? Does it even matter?
Yes, Lemmy is the more popular option currently. No, it doesn't really matter that much. Feel free to stick to Lemmy or try https://kbin.social/ , but the content is pretty much the same.
I played Genshin Impact up until I explored the world and beat a couple of bosses. As soon as it asks me to grind dungeons and pulls I dipped out. Gacha games suck, it's always a massive time (or money) sink where you get almost nothing in return. Sure, I could spend a month grinding for that legendary character. Then what? I'll beat one DPS check before getting stuck again and having to grind for the next thing. It's surprising how many people pay money in these games and don't realize how pointless it is.
Slow, boring climbing sections that add nothing to the game and just pad out playtime. I'm looking at you, God of War (2018).
Lives systems. Luckily modern games never use it anymore, but every now and then I play an older game and wow, losing 30+ minutes of progress just because you died a few times SUCKS.
If you hate menu diving then Tears of the Kingdom will actually make you go insane. I'm constantly swapping armor and scrolling up and down to find specific items.
Looks pretty good, but there's a serious lack of stunning enemies with the flashlight that Alan Wake was known for. I hope they didn't remove that mechanic.
Since Reddit content being used to train AI was part of what triggered their Dumb Actions™️, is there a way to deal with this on Lemmy? If there's a way to license API access or the content itself under, say, LGPL to prevent commercial AI from using it that would be awesome. With the way ActivityPub works I'm not sure if...
The licensing doesn't matter, most AI are trained off proprietary and copyrighted data. There's still a lot of talks in governments about whether this is legal or not, but at this point the cat's out of the bag and I doubt we'll regress back to using smaller amounts of data.
Aside from the fact that I don't think this law will pass, I doubt it'll be effective at all. Companies will just move AI training to countries where it is legal. The most the EU can do right now is play whack-a-mole and start blocking AIs that don't meet its requirements, but at that point people will just host mirrors or use a VPN. It's just not enforceable, and the EU knows that, which is why they're so stressed out trying to figure out a reasonable law regarding AI.
I have increased the server parameters a bit. If there are still issues, there is still the option of an upgrade but still... it's a budget VPS, and it requires a few minutes of downtime for the website. I'll keep an eye on it, and I apologize for the unexpected interruption. I have temporarily disabled upvotes and boosts auto-refresh as well. I will check how much it will relieve the server.
@ernest If you're planning on opening donations for server hosting now might be the time, lots of people coming in from Reddit and I'm getting a lot of error 500s. Good luck in the upcoming storm.
Cautiously optimistic, it all comes down to how well designed the missions are. People are nostalgic for the old Assassin's Creed games but a lot of the missions were just "follow this guy" or really shallow stealth missions. Either way, I'm so happy they decided to go back to an Arabic setting. There are such few games that explore it.

Executives are really obsessed with making every platform copy every other platform. When Facebook added reactions suddenly every social media had to have them. When TikTok took off suddenly every social media needed to copy it (ie YouTube Shorts, Facebook Stories). Now this...

My proudest moment is cheesing the hell out of the Goron temple. Without spoiling anything, I did not follow the path I was supposed to follow and somehow bumbled by way through to the end.
