@keenan I was teased a lot for liking "gay" things by dudes who most certainly listened to the same music. Straight dudes that felt ashamed by their music choices, verbally attacked me as a vent for those feelings. They had no healthy way of reconciling their feelings, as talking about those feelings would make them turn in their man card. Being the sassiest open homo in school, I simply clapped back enough to make them stop. It hurt, and I returned that pain to them with sharp words.
@keenan Exactly, the cycle continues to inflict pain as it is fed; Without change to the interpersonal dynamics we experience now, this will only foster a social, emotional, and physical destruction on an individual and in turn, a larger scale.
Being brave is a challenging thing as it's marshalling your fear in a productive way. High School is a wild ass place, I'd make up for that now as your an adult, capable and stronger now. You can act as a beacon for those who are lost in the dark!
@keenan this was a great read. Yeah, I've seen weird stuff like this. How the hell can enjoying some kind of music show your sexuality? Always found that odd. My wife loves Britney and I do too - I took her to see what was probably her last show ever in Vegas a few years back. Loved it. Toxic is a GREAT song.
And how about on Family Guy, their "joke" that if you like Madonna you've "got a gay". That always got me. I'm a boring cis het guy and I love Madonna songs. I got picked on a ton as a kid for some reason too. And called gay. The 90s were a damn weird time.
I remember that semi recent Wanda Sykes PSA about not calling things you thought were bad gay. Gotta leave that crap behind us as a culture.
It is odd! At least I find it odd! It’s a lot of odd things. Pop music (or anything) being assigned to gender. People using sexuality and gender as an insult, even when they’re trying to be inclusive. Odd!
Britney rules. Madonna rules. Music rules.
