Hey ,

How do you buy (paper) books ethically?
I was looking at abebooks, but they're owned by now 🤦‍♂️

Hey peeps,

I'm trying to figure out what GELI stands for. (Just because it's such a cute name, I guess? lol)

I've deduced that it's GEOM_ELI (https://man.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=geli&apropos=0&sektion=0&manpath=FreeBSD+14.1-RELEASE+and+Ports&arch=default&format=html), but what's ELI?

(Also, I kinda wish had man -K (full text search). I need to write a todo to make my own implementation)

New(-to-me) laptop is in!

Looking forward to putting it through its paces.

This <$100 thing might be the most performant machine I own. 😆

Also, I've been experimenting a bit with #NomadBSD lately. It's not quite as polished as a Linux distro, but it's mighty nice! (Persistent #FreeBSD-based boot USB image, can do UFS or ZFS and optionally encrypt)

Something I miss from #MacOS: Being able to command-click on a Finder window's titlebar, and seeing a pop-up menu of the entire file path.

I can't find any convenient way of doing this in #KDE #Dolphin, other than making the window huge so it can show the entire path, which doesn't work with my workflow most of the time.

Just for the curious, the directory I'm working on now is 127 characters long (full path) and 8 directories deep from /

Edit: Found a solution, thanks to @Tionisla

I was at someone's house today and there was no way to set the thermostat because the internet connectivity was down.

This is the kind of crap that radicalizes you.

The thermostat was put there by the builder.

Addendum for further explanation: I was there for something work-related, and the house is vacant for the moment. You're supposed to connect the thermostat to their app, but I couldn't get the app to see the dumb thing, even after joining its own hotspot.
Really unnecessarily confusing.

Early-gen X1 Carbons are getting stupid cheap on eBay.

I'm thinking I'll be getting a new(-to-me) laptop this year, fo' sho.

Might have to look at Intel Mac Minis as well, as Apple fans follow their glorious leader onto the latest upgrade treadmill 😆

Anyone got shell accounts to an OpenBSD server I can get an invite to? (Not privileged or anything/teensy quota is fine)

Just wanted to have a shell account I can learn on. I do have an OpenBSD machine at home, but my PineBook is realistically Linux-only. OpenBSD will run, but the framebuffer doesn't work (yet?), so I think it's just "hope xenodm works, otherwise debug with a serial cable" ;)

P.S. I think I was looking in the wrong place. There is a list here: https://tildeverse.org/members/

Finally found a #FOSS #android #scrobbler that supports saving to a self-hosted service or a local file: https://github.com/kawaiiDango/pano-scrobbler

Many thanks to @youronlyone for pointing me in the right direction. Added their f-droid repo to Droid-ify, and bob's your uncle!

Now I've exported my last.fm #scrobbles thanks to https://github.com/encukou/lastscrape-gui/blob/master/lastexport.py, and I can delete my account. XD

Hey #NetBSD peeps,

What older laptops work best with NetBSD?

I tried Net on my Thinkpad X200 about 18 months ago, and wasn't able to get S3 suspend working (it just rebooted, IIRC).

Is anyone else running NetBSD on a laptop?

Just curious, thinking about trying it out in the future, on something cheap and used. :)

Half my kingdom for a Signal client that works on ARM (and no, I'm hella not going to compile electron on my pinebook, get outta here, lol)

I've tried Axolotl via flatpak, but it just crashes on start with some kind of (oh gee) electron error.

Umm... WHAT?

A screenshot of https://f-droid.org/packages/ru.tech.imageresizershrinker/

EDIT: Just for clarity, I'm expressing surprise that an android app would have lossy PNG as an option, not at the idea of pre-compressing a PNG to make it lossy (generally by reducing the number of colors, but also by doing things like pixellating unimportant regions of an image, such as a desktop wallpaper). All techniques I enjoy using, as well.

Did I seriously just buy something on eBay without looking at the shipping first? Egad.

Ok, it's not exorbitant, but it's not cheap. Yeeesh.

P.S. Ok, I looked up shipping rates from them to me. I don't think I'm getting ripped off on the shipping. I just didn't realize it was extra and didn't calculate it into the price initially. Still not a bad deal.

REPEAT AFTER ME:

42!! Lucky number! NOT 84! (Even though it came out in '84, that's immaterial!)

The ONLY Macintoshes that ran at 512x384 were the 1990 Mac LC and IIsi with the 12" screen, and the Color Classic and perhaps other related later all-in-ones.

ALL MONOCHROME COMPACT MACS HAD 512x342 RESOLUTION SCREENS.

I've got an odd graphical problem and I need the advice of some #GIMP experts.

I use this image as my wallpaper, and I absolutely love it:
https://unsplash.com/photos/purple-and-black-pyramid-wallpaper-k1bO_VTiZSs

BUT when I use i3lock/swaylock, it's off-center which is frustrating in a very #ADHD way (see screenshot)

How would I go about cropping the image to make it centered? I mean, so that the little circular login indicator thingie is centered right on the innermost triangle?

I tooted this on another account, and I feel it needs to be made into a "don't make me tap the sign" meme. XD

The prevalent "I just wanna get on my PC and get stuff DONE" attitude is really toxic to the process of learning and growing because it reduces complex systems to a pass/fail based on the desire to seek the path of least resistance.

Umm... can someone who has the spoons handy log an issue that their latest release (non-beta) tarball is double-gzipped? (https://github.com/gwsw/less/issues)

#SpoonTheory -- I'm doing fine, but dealing with github REALLY DOES cost a couple extra spoons even when you're having a good day, lol. Stop using that MSFTy GPL-violating crap, my peeps! :P~
