The key indicator if a Mastodon client is good or bad is how it handles animated GIFs. https://media.giphy.com/media/ZFZLIuWWkr29y/giphy.gif

brennansv,
@brennansv@sfba.social avatar

@adamjcook @elk I tried it. It was pretty good and a step up prompt from the official Mastodon website. I am using Ice Cubes which runs on iOS and macOS. It’s really good in a lot of ways. I’d like GIF support to be better. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/ice-cubes-for-mastodon/id6444915884

Today's Design Diary walks through designing a Step focused Live Activity for Pedometer++. The particularly interesting part was working out how to scale the goal bar once you've met your goal in a way which is intuitive but remains relevant regardless of how far past your goal you are.

A video showing a step focused live activity growing from zero steps to 100,000 steps. Below the number of steps label is a graph bar which fills up and then once it reaches 100% it switches to marking how far past your goal you have gone.

@_Davidsmith When I worked at a startup which made a fitness band there was a record player set up which had bumps on the surface and a tracker was placed on it to test out firmware versions for step counting.

#fediverse #SocialMedia #bluesky #nostr #winning

brennansv,
@brennansv@sfba.social avatar

@stefan Neither will win because none of the solutions out currently solve the fundamental problem of social media at scale. Abuse and moderation is the biggest risk and it is not being sufficiently addressed.

brennansv,
@brennansv@sfba.social avatar

@stefan This does not really eliminate the problem of abuse when anyone can see and reply to posts. Fundamentally changes need to be made to how we use social media.

If someone does start to get a lot of unwanted attention and a mob of users start becoming less than civil it will force this person to either block a lot of people or shut down their account.

This is why I believe this dynamic should not be carried forward from the legacy social media platforms.

brennansv,
@brennansv@sfba.social avatar

@stefan The fundamental principle that I feel needs to be addressed is the fact that as a population becomes larger anonymity increases and the sense of personal accountability decreases. This is why trolls and scammers are able to thrive on multiple platforms and how has not really addressed this problem.

I have been putting together my thoughts on this problem but cannot dedicate much time to it until I am past some deadlines. I believe that are some obvious solutions we can tap into which are already proven to work.

I'm so confused about the market for professional AV editors who want to work on an iPad. If you need to do this stuff on the go why not just get a MBA or the MBP 14”?

brennansv,
@brennansv@sfba.social avatar

@paul The only reason I see is a touch UI. You still have to manage a ton if assets which require a lot of storage. I’d rather do that on a Mac with plenty of storage.

brennansv,
@brennansv@sfba.social avatar

@DuncanWatson @chemoelectric Imagine paying over $10k for with the promise of it being done more than 2 years ago and it is still requiring you to keep your hands on the steering wheel and babysit it? I don’t know why there has not been a class action lawsuit yet.

brennansv,
@brennansv@sfba.social avatar

@DuncanWatson @chemoelectric The most strange part of self-driving EVs is that I enjoy driving them. Why would I pay to give that up?

brennansv,
@brennansv@sfba.social avatar

@chemoelectric @DuncanWatson I don’t want Tesla or SpaceX to fail because what the thousands of people working at these companies are doing the work that we need to get done, but the guy at the top is increasingly unbearable.

brennansv,
@brennansv@sfba.social avatar

@chemoelectric @DuncanWatson I think I could see a reduced roll for drivers where there may just be an arcade style controller in the center console for giving the car input to override some of the AI’s decisions. But with an EV I feel no guilt accelerating and later recharging with a mostly green grid.

I don't often remind people that I am hugely invested in Apple. I've owned shares since 1996. Yes, the company I criticize the most is the company whose failure would affect me most devastatingly. I criticize them because I want them to be the best they can be. It might ring hollow, but I want them to "be Apple" more than I want to profit from them "being Apple."

brennansv,
@brennansv@sfba.social avatar

@danielpunkass I feel the same way. Apple has the potential to reach a higher standard and should always strive to do better in every way.

Bluesky is going to skyrocket to mainstream popularity and actually replace Twitter, and Mastodon cannot, because Bluesky is being designed to be simple, fun, and — most importantly — easy to understand.

brennansv,
@brennansv@sfba.social avatar

@adamjcook @jperlow @gruber Above all else I value ActivityPub because it is a W3C standard and so much could be done with it. It’s the RSS feed of today. Yet it’s not all we really need. Legacy protocols like SMTP and iCal need a modern upgrade. A protocol that defines a social graph (FB, LinkedIn, etc) which the user owns would be the peek of this category of protocols and standards.

adamjcook, to random

I am relatively new to , and it is possible that I missed it, but can someone reassure me that there is a near-term plan to dump the token-based fare system to ride the People Mover?

A near-term plan to consolidate all city/regional transportation into a single fare system?

This should have really been addressed during the recent Detroit State of the City address, if it was not done so.

brennansv,
@brennansv@sfba.social avatar

@adamjcook Here in the Bay Area we have the Bike Share and Muni in SF, the Caltrain down the peninsula and BART which stretches around the region. All of these services run on the Clipper Card which also works with Apple Wallet and the watch with the Express Transit feature. Every region should have their own system for all public transit. It has flaws, but is generally quite good.

I am seeing posts from @DeepDishSwift which is the first conference where I am seeing most attendees posting on . That’s a welcome milestone.

brennansv,
@brennansv@sfba.social avatar

@adamjcook @DeepDishSwift I never saw a Swift/iOS conference sponsored by a pizza company before but this makes sense for Chicago. Maybe you could do something similar and have the conference at the Henry Ford Museum. They have conference space. Try to get the new electric F-150 or Mach-e as a sponsor. 😄

https://www.thehenryford.org/host-an-event/private-events/event-types/meetings-and-conventions/

brennansv,
@brennansv@sfba.social avatar

@adamjcook @DeepDishSwift I’m originally from Milwaukee where we have Harley-Davidson which has their museum and the Iron Horse Hotel nearby. That is what would make for a good venue + hotel combo there.

Once you figure out the budget for booking the space you need and run a survey of developers to see who’d attend locally you could work out the cost per person. Then sponsor contributions would bring down the cost per attendee. Make sure to include a budget to bring in speakers and their hotel rooms. I would not hesitate to message organizers of other recent conferences for guidance.

brennansv,
@brennansv@sfba.social avatar

@adamjcook I'd start small too. There use to be NSCoder Nights which was typically a small, local group of devs getting together over coffee or beers to talk about iOS apps. In Milwaukee I recall it was often 5 people and 3 of them were not even writing code yet but wanted to be there to hear about it. We were able to get into office conference rooms for free when one of us worked at a nice office. It was good to have a good A/V system.

These days we have 5G and many places might be cool with you plugging in your Mac with an HDMI cable in one of the private rooms. You can even bring a display. As long as people are ordering food and drinks there should be no additional cost.

Once you do this a while and build up some regulars you are closer to hosting an annual regional conference. I’d consider rotating a regional conference between Chicago, Milwaukee and Detroit. It’s all within driving distance for a lot of people in the Midwest.

brennansv,

@jamesthomson The joke still works. A couple years back when I saw Steve Buscemi in this scene I had to look it up on Etsy and order it. The ironic thing is, this movie is now so old that when I wear it pretty much nobody at the office knows the reference.

@delong I consider GPT to be a very advanced search engine which took a couple big steps forward from Google Search. Instead of finding you a hotel with a pool it can aggregate data from multiple sources and list hotels with a pool within walking distance of your conference hall and warn you about concerns with a hotel, like it being booked for a Furries event which may or may not be your thing. Basically it’s a team of interns doing gathering research, yet very quickly, so can make mistakes.

It’s so funny that the default system font size on the Mac (13 pt) now looks so laughably small on my laptop screen thanks to the proliferation of web-centric design (which default to 16 pt) and the inflation of the macOS chrome and menu bar elements.

We have lost so much screen real estate because everything takes up a ton more space than it used to, especially on large monitors where 13 pt fonts are perfectly legible. Imagine fitting 25% more information on the same screen without losing legibility. Ah well.

brennansv,
