Tonight's menu: cheap beer chicken! (With BBQ sauce). Since I don't think the slug traps are working as intended, and don't think the backyard Wood Rat should be wandeing around drunk the whole week.

@ai6yr ah beer can chicken. Yes, it's really good and easy to make!

It's a slug party,
and I've bought them all a beer
Let's invite them to come right over,
and have a great cheer
It was the cheapest beer they sell nearby
But for a party it will fly
The question is really,
Will they just get drunk, or die?

@ai6yr is the beer trap just supposed to attract and feed them, or is it supposed to kill them?

Checked off "bought cheapest beer possible before 130pm and bicycled it home" on the bike tooter achivement list. (Edit: just for clarity, these are for my slugs, I do have a driver's license and no DUI arrest, I do own a car, and I don't drink beer.)

Just introduced my daughter to Molly Hatchet. They are coming to play at our town's Street Faire this summer. She was not really impressed, but did Google them and found out they've been through 4 drummers, 5 bass players, etc.

Weird question: Is it a bad idea to buy a radio like the DX10 from a ham-I-don't-know at a ham fest or on QRZ / eBay? Or just buy new?

bud_t,
@bud_t@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@Geojoek it's not a weird question at all, and there is no simple answer. Lately I've bought radios new, but I've certainly bought plenty used from QRZ, eBay, QTH, etc. I've only had one really bad experience on an eBay purchase, but eventually it was covered under buyer protection so all I lost was my time and shipping costs one way.

I guess my decision point is this: if I can afford to pay the new radio price, I do that instead of mess with the unknown. But if that radio is not offered new or is out of production, then obviously I'll scout the used market.

Oh- and maybe it's just me, but I always avoid sellers who can't spell or who use really bad grammar in their listings.

bud_t,
@bud_t@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@ai6yr @Geojoek I also check the seller's QRZ profile and do a quick web search. If they seem like a horrible person or even just a d!ck, then I'm out. Even if they've got something that I really want

Why do sales people continue to knock on our door even though we have a "No Soliciting" sign? I just had a guy try to sell us pest control, and when I gestured to the sign and said "we would appreciate it if you didn't solicit us " he just smiled.

Do people not know what the work means? Unlikely. I understand the pressure to make a sale, but if we have that sign we're not buying anything from you.

@bud_t@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@W6KME wow that is crazy. Yes, the pest control guys seem to be the worst. Though I've never seen anyone that aggressive!

The more I use my commercial handheld radios, the more I kind of dislike my amateur handhelds. Of course the commercial radios don't have the amateur friendly features, but they just work really well with very little (if any) flakiness. And they are rugged. And yes, you pay for it.

I'll never abandon my amateur handhelds, but sometimes I wish they were just better.

bud_t,
@bud_t@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@ai6yr yes, I do that too. With my Motos and my BKs, I can "hand jam" new channels into them in the field fairly easily. They are monoband, so you've got to carry two radios often, but I don't mind.

And the audio is so much better on the commercial radios!

bud_t,
@bud_t@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@lauren to a large degree, yes. But some of these amateur radios are pretty expensive for being less than polished!

bud_t,
@bud_t@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@JohnJBurnsIII I didn't know much about Marine band radios. Though it's all channelized VHF, right? I know that Icom has always been a big player in that area. Maybe others here have experience?

Tagging @N1ZZZ who is a Mariner...

bud_t,
@bud_t@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@lauren for sure. And they have huge contacts which fuel development. Not to mention that the commercial radios have to be mission critical and they must work.

The amateur radio market is small and probably not really profitable for those manufacturers. Hence we'll never get high reliability and cutting edge stuff from the big manufacturers.

released a new feature this week: heading up when navigating. I'm a "North up" person myself, but maybe others like heading up.

They are releasing another new feature next week, and rumor has it that it will be photos in Markers! That would be awesome! Fingers crossed.
