Heh. I knew you know! I like the subway maps for getting a strategic feel, but nothing beats the awesome looks of a 3D star map. I wish there were more programs out there that let people work with 3D star plots.

I'm especially interested in how @sudnadja is doing all this fancy stuff in Mathematica...

On that note, I'm gonna go read up on yEd.

IF your FTL is based on finite routes between stars (wormholes, gates, jumplanes, &c.) instead of a "go-anywhere" drive, you get the lovely perk of being able to use subway-style topological maps. They're clearly (pun intended) easier to read. 😁

As much as I love the Expanse TV show, and Apple's Foundation, I think I'd have to agree. Star Trek is a more appealing future than space slums or the Galactic Empire of Hats.

It’s amazing—and terrifying—how fast the bridge went down <https://www.npr.org/live-updates/baltimore-bridge-collapse#catastrophic-bridge-collapse-was-caught-on-video>. It looks like something under ten seconds from the moment of impact till the deck hits the water.

Horrible to contemplate how bad this would have been if the collision had happened six hours later...

@tkinias @nyrath I know some bridges have concrete pilings around their supports to prevent ships from ever colliding with the main structure.

I wonder why the F. S. Key bridge didn't...?

Costa Talalaev gave me a fractal: a 3-dimensional Sierpinski gasket!

He made it using the 3d printer at the Hacklab, a makerspace here in Edinburgh. It was a bit hard to make since it's held together only at tiny spots. He had to build something with more plastic, a kind of scaffolding, and then tear that off. The end result is very light yet sturdy.

We had someone at our uni present on fractals, and that's where I learned that, just like Barnsley's Fern, Sierpinski's triangle can be generated by random motions in a chaos game.¹ Definitely something I'd love to learn more about - I'm still considering adding a math double major...

@johncarlosbaez That is good advice; thank you for it! I didn't mean to imply I'd really concentrate on fractals, though. I think my favorite mathematical topics (that I know of) are numerical analysis (works nicely with CS), and maybe number theory. Not really sure where that fits overall, but I'll keep looking for opportunities to add another major!

I keep looking at rust and thinking "Gods it seems to be an awesome language"... Then I read and hear about a lot of hassels moving from C or C++ to rust and never really any massive success stories... are the massive success stories out there?

There's always a bigger fish, my friend, & there's no need to get testy. A much bigger project than your PDE solver is the Linux kernel, which is written in C & now some Rust, with C++ explicitly rejected by arguably the world's most successful programmer, Linus Torvalds.

The United States' legacy? Why not our inventions - the light bulb, the semiconductor, or the airplane? Or the leaps in civil rights, through government of, by, and for the people? We were one of the first nations to outlaw slavery. We're the second-oldest continuously-functioning government on the planet, and the oldest republic.

Those are things people will remember 500 years from now. The advertisements for Coca-Cola? Not likely.

Completed my illuminated manuscript of Psalm 93 in time for Mother's Day!

I used a modern variation of the Beneventan hand, which was most widely used in southern Italy in the middle ages. The historical script had lots of ligatures, but those are hard for modern readers, so I didn't use any here. This is also the hand where our modern question mark originated.

@paradoxmo This Sheaffer No-Nonsense fine point for the letters, and a felt-tip pigment liner for the rest. I used acrylic paint for the illustration, & for ink, a mix of PH Martin's and Higgins from Hobby Lobby. Nothing fancy!

I just noticed that my new flat has two things that look like windows from outside, but are invisible from inside! This raises lots of questions.

They're the two with 12 panes each, on the top floor. The windows directly below are also gone: once upon a time Edinburgh imposed a tax on windows, and people blocked them off to save money. But I've never seen it done the way it is in my flat, with the windows left intact outside. One of them is behind a 'press', a shallow closet typical of these parts. Another is lurking behind the wall in my office somewhere! I wish I could get at it. Maybe there's a skeleton in there.

Well, with masonry like that, there was never going to be a good way to fill in the cuts.

I wonder whether the interior was opened up in a renovation? Maybe some walls were removed or rearranged, and those windows became superfluous. I could see someone covering them for thermal reasons. If they face south, then covering them would keep the space a lot cooler, especially pre-air-conditioning.

    Question:

    Does anyone know of an APL compiler or transpiler that can generated Vulkan or OpenGL shader scripts? (Free/libre would be most appreciated.) I think Aaron Hsu might have engineered something like this at some point, but I can't find anything about it at all right now, probably thanks to our amazing new "AI-enhanced" search engines.
