Community is so important - I know it can be hard to find your people, but they are out there. And I’ve found that reaching out and being a friend tends to reveal other friends around you who were just waiting to be discovered.

We need at leasst 17 more people using the hashtag (on public posts) to have a shot of trending.

Why do I care? Because Mastodon isn't the greatest for discoverability. I think BikeNite is a cool community and I would like to see more cyclists able to find us and participate in this a/synchronous weekly structured chat. @mastobikes @fedibikes @bikenite

Hmm.. I wonder's who fault today's earthquake was. A couple of these go through my neighborhood.

A lot of faults in the Thousand Oaks area

darkuncle,

@Laukidh @ai6yr thankfully, a pretty half-hearted effort 😂

L.A. earthquake currently rated around 4.5 or 4.6, near Malibu. No reports of major damage to this point and nothing fell here that I've found so far. No systems problems or power/telecom issues that I've found. Today is the anniversary of the major L.A. Sylmar quake of 1971. Someone mentioned this to me this morning and I stupidly replied, "I guess we're about due for another one." Oops.

darkuncle,

@lauren now I know who to blame

Exclusive: I got the first crack using Adobe Lightroom photo editing on Apple's Vision Pro. It works as advertised. I was impressed with how easy it was to learn the headset interface — eyes and finger taps — and quickly be productive. UI is like the iPad version. AMA. https://www.cnet.com/tech/computing/i-edited-lightroom-photos-on-apple-vision-pro-using-my-eyes-it-works/

darkuncle,

@stshank my wife (amateur photographer) agreed with me that people using this will look like Tony Stark … to themselves; to everybody else it will look like you’re squinting and waving your hands around like a doofus 😂

(Still want one though.)

yeah perhaps giving the cops access to dna databases, selling it to insurance companies, refusing deletion requests and skimping on security and getting popped dont really give folks a sense their data is safe with 23andme, and im willing to bet thats impacting their bottom line

darkuncle,

@Viss @krypt3ia for that particular threat, at least, I have reasonably high confidence it won’t happen (due to the way Apple handles biometrics and the Secure Enclave). Requisite docs: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT214051

darkuncle,

@Viss @krypt3ia fair point (but bypassing biometrics is a different risk than leaking them)

darkuncle,

@Viss @krypt3ia their entire brand is privacy and premium-ness; the second that perception erodes will be the beginning of the end. Maybe advertising revenue is the heroin of business models: just too addictive to quit if you ever start.

In a world simultaneously ravaged by inundation and drought associated with climate change, a common question is “can the inundation balance out the drought?” and the answer seems to be “no”

https://www.newsweek.com/atmospheric-rivers-lakes-mead-powell-expert-1867782

darkuncle,

@bascule in part because a year’s worth of rain in a year, and a year’s worth of rain in a week, aren’t the same thing. (And also: rain vs snow)

Visitors to here in L.A. often ask why the blazes is there a big art deco dam in the middle of the San Fernando Valley right next to the Ventura Freeway? Used in innumerable movies and TV shows (to name just two, "Buckaroo Banzai", "Escape from New York"), it seems utterly incongruous.

It was built for times like later today and tonight.

After terrible flooding events, Los Angeles embarked on a massive flood control network project starting early in the 20th century, including channelization of the L.A. River (which some people still bemoan, but was absolutely necessary), and the Sepulveda Dam with its basin (normally used for recreation) are integral parts of this enormous flood control system.

Most of the time it all just sits quietly doing little, and the city dutifully keeps the system cleaned out and maintained.

But as the old song goes, "It never rains in Southern California -- but it pours." And when that happens, that dam and the rest of the L.A. flood control system save lives and property big time.

darkuncle,

@lauren one of my kids took a field trip at school to go see it a few months ago; in all the time I’ve lived here (25 years now) I’ve never been

Do NOT use Betterhelp. You'll end up needing help to make things better.

darkuncle,

@inkican @alice “BetterHelp was caught selling data to Facebook, Snapchat, Criteo, and Pinterest.” <— that right there should be a fatal and immediate end for any company managing personal health data. If someone in leadership had such phenomenally poor judgment as to think that was a good idea (or even acceptable), they cannot be trusted in the space ever again.

I consider myself fairly well-educated and informed, but I found myself surprised that the 13th amendment to the US Constitution made slavery and forced labor completely legal IF a state is using it as punishment. (One guess which people are most likely to be forced into this legal slavery, and which locales are most likely to employ it.) See The Shawshank Redemption, or more recently, this great AP investigation showing hundreds of US food brands are using slave labor as part of their inputs. https://www.marketplace.org/2024/02/01/hundreds-of-food-brands-linked-to-hidden-prisoner-workforce-ap-reports/

Hot Take:

Im all for adopting pets, but I completely understand why some people choose to buy a dog. So many dog rescue organizations are ridiculous in the things they ask and expect in the adoption process.

Do you own or rent? None of your business.

Where do you work and how long have you been there? None of your business.

Do you have a criminal history? None of your business.

I had one that wanted my driver's license number and to do multiple home visits. Are you kidding me? Get off that pedestal before you get a nosebleed.

darkuncle,

@deweyritten I wish I could fave this a few more times

Talking to friends across the tech industry, and orgs with inflexible RTO mandates are about to enter the “find out” phase, if they haven’t already. That kind of actively hostile policy stance only works if everyone is doing it, and too many places have seen the light (cf. Atlassian report)

    darkuncle,

@genehack what most people seem to want isn’t mandated remote or mandated office, but no mandates at all: flexibility to choose what rhythms and patterns work best for their work and home lives, with input from their teams and families alike.

Tech people, I welcome an explanation here: if a DNSSEC outage breaks the IP address resolution protocol, why am I still unable to visit a site by telling my browser to go straight to the IP address? ie 95.173.136.70 instead of Kremlin.ru?
