For those in my TL who followed a discussion in which a Usenet era (c. 1989-91) document introducing modern Hermetic (as distinct from Jewish) Kabbalah in relatively accessible terms was discussed: unfortunately, the source found in that thread turns out to be incomplete. Fortunately, a further search revealed that the author set the text as an illustrated PDF and offered it as a free book in 2001. So here is a direct link to that PDF for Colin Low's Notes On Kabbalah.

Bernie Sanders’ taste in people has been questionable, at best.

This is not just “criticism of Israel.” Neither has any of the other hateful things she’s been saying for months. It could only have been better if they’d fired her faster.

Hamas wants to be the new America is an absolutely amazing comment.

“When Hamas is talking about eliminating Israel, it’s not talking about killing all the Jews,” she said, causing fellow panelist Eli Lake to erupt in laughter. She continued, “It’s about eliminating the idea of a Jewish state — ending a Jewish state, ending an ethno-nationalist state and having a state more like what we have in the United States of America.”

Hillel and Hubbard aren’t “Zionist organizations” and even if they were, that’s not a good reason to try and expunge them from campuses, so I don’t think “rethinking” your language is going to help.

It’s also pretty ironic for the “college is where you air out all your ideas regardless” crowd to try and eliminate one group of people. Unless they’re just antisemites.

I was flipping through some still images this morning of this painting series The 613 by Archie Rand and ordered the book that collects images of them all published in 2015.

"Archie Rand's career as an artist spans five decades and myriad themes and genres. Among his pioneering explorations, The 613 is surely one of his most ambitious feats yet. Without any idea where the work would be exhibited, Rand began transforming each and every one of the 613 mitzvahs, or commandments, into its own breathtaking painting, a series that took five years to complete.

Each of the gorgeous and perplexing panels features a vibrant, unexpected image that brings forth the heart of its law and commands our eyes to linger. Rand is startling and original in his rich color choices, bold characters, and extraordinarily expressive approach."

Solidarity With 'Bad Jews': An Interview with Emily Tamkin

Mainstream establishment Jewish organizations are to the right of American Jews more generally. And there has always been a gap between mainstream American Jewish organizations and American Jews. There’s a process I describe early on in the book, where Jews were trying to figure out who they were in terms of race and ethnicity and assimilation and acculturation. But institutional Jewish leadership at this time knew exactly what they wanted to be. They wanted to be white, because they understood that whiteness in this country came with rights and privileges and they were not going to have that taken away just so people could feel different and special. So you have American Jewish leaders arguing before Congress that American Jews were white and needed to be treated as such.

dukepaaron,
@dukepaaron@babka.social avatar

@raf I kind of wanted to read her book but I really don't like that she took the bad jews concept and moved it to an intra-community political designation when it has always been a 'fuck you' critique of goyim opposing their political opposites in the Jewish community.

So I won't read it because I'm that petty.
