@x I haven't used Pidgin, but the XMPP support is said to be very outdated. @grimmy is working on modern XMPP support, but until then Gajim is probably the best choice.
I'm setting a server on my #openbsd It will have domain sapka.me and the certs will be issued by letsencrypt. This domain already hosts a website, so I will reuse existing cert.
This mean I will use fullchain cert, which is owned by root. My prosody server is run by _prosody.
What's the secure way to share this cert between root and _prosody?
@nixCraft pubkey only + random valid port number which I wrote into .ssh/config on the client side. I don't think a single scanner ever came across the 5 digit port...
@stubenhocker@josh Yes, but it breaks end-to-end encryption (!), A/V calls, presence, typing indications, ...
For interoperability you need standards compliance.
@stubenhocker@josh Yes. That's why bridges and many incompatible, fragmented protocols are a bad idea. To solve this problem we need standardization. Sadly, Matrix doesn't care about existing internet standards and cooks up their own thing.
@badlogic No it's just branding, but this might be helpful for users. For example the apps are called Snikket on both iOS and Android and can be downloaded for free on the Play Store. It also should be much lighter on resources than something like Synapse and it's based on the IETF internet standard XMPP: https://snikket.org/faq/#q-why-not-the-matrix-protocol
@badlogic I exclusively use Conversations for ~two years now with my family. It doesn't have all those stickers and reaction emojis and the message bubbles aren't very round but in the end it's pretty reliable and does what it it's supposed to do.
The feature where my terminal makes hyperlinks out of any URL it sees suddenly becomes quite dangerous when I'm decoding malicious base64 that was sent to my server...
@ulfi@ejabberd This. My chat server for my family is in my apartment and changes IP address sometimes which has resulted in lost messages because s2s links do not have the same precautions (XEP-0198) like c2s links. Sadly, only @prosodyim implements XEP-0198 for s2s links as of today and it takes two to tango.
I haven't had any lost messages since enabling mod_s2s_keepalive, but graceful handling of unstable s2s links could mean more people being able to host small XMPP servers at home.
@eversten@lobi@ulfi@ejabberd@prosodyim I calculated that I need to run my home server for ~3 years to break even with VPS. + My data is physically in my home and I have much more RAM. The only downside really is the unstable internet connection and electricity supply.
