As fosstodon is now invite-only, we've created an account at https://mastodon.social/@organicmaps to reach more people. FOSS should be available to anyone, right?
@organicmaps This makes things kind of confusing with multiple official accounts. Also applying your principle, everyone would just be on the largest instance on the Fediverse. People will boost your posts and then more people will follow from their instances, I wouldn't about popularity so much as to violate the federation principle.
Today I gave myself the gift of uninstalling Threema for Christmas. Threema is still one of the better messengers out there. And I'm very glad that I was able to switch from WhatsApp to Threema about 10 years ago. Since then, however, the world has moved on. I now only chat via the #IETF standard #XMPP. Preferably with my own #Snikket_im server.
@Castiai Everyone NOT being available on some walled garden messenger is doing good. Let's make interoperability and compliance with internet standards a hard requirement!
What's a good to-do list app for android, something that could also handle sub-tasks? i just need something i can type in a few words and then mark it as done when i do it
So according to Eugen, he's been using XMPP during a time when people let their desktop PCs run all the time, which is ideal for XMPP's requirement to maintain an active connection from sender to recipient in order to actually deliver messages.
But when the world transitioned from desktop PCs to mobile phones, XMPP's requirement to stay always on was just not practical, and the world moved on from XMPP and onto other platforms.
The only way people used XMPP was through Facebook and Google Talk, but the mainstream really didn't have a strong appreciation for XMPP.
According to Eugen, Email is still going strong because everyone knows how to work with it
Effectively, embracing, extending, extinguishing is just not a thing for email yet.
@manlycoffee@mike@Gargron XMPP does not have a requirement to "always stay on". The server can send a push notifications to mobile clients to wake them up and retrieve messages like any other chat app.
@manlycoffee That doesn't make a lot of sense. Google, or anyone else really, could have implemented push notifications for their app also in the early days.
If the client and the IM service come from the same vendor, you don't even need to standardize on some protocol extension.
I find myself these days hesitant to even consider any private messengers if they don't have the option to verify which devices/keys have access to your messages. #Signal, #XMPP / OMEMO, #Matrix, hell even Facebook Messenger's E2EE chats let you verify which devices can read your messages. If you're encrypting your users' messages, but they can't verify whether a rogue device has access to their messages, then why even bother encrypting them?
@gerowen If your contact has verified your OMEMO keys and a rogue key is added, messages are not encrypted to this key.
I wonder how other apps let you "verify" which other devices were added. In an ongoing MitM attack the server simply wouldn't tell you about the rogue keys. Maybe it's just security theater?
Any cool cats got some interesting #XMPP chats I can check out? I wanna explore it, as I heavily overlooked it in favor of Matrix when looking at decentralized chat options.
@foreverastudent What are you interested in? I'm using XMPP mostly for personal chats (friends I know in IRL & family) but if you create a chat that sounds interesting, I'm in!
Windy weather increases cooling buildings and hence requires more heating (in winter) which causes CO2 emissions.
On the other hand, more wind means more wind energy which reduces CO2 emissions from power stations.
Until last year, the wind chill effect on CO2 emissions prevailed in the Netherlands.
From this year onwards, due to better insulation and increased wind power, more wind implies lower Dutch CO2 emissions.
How long will it take for organizations to move away from giving this advice about looking for a lock icon and the word "secure" in the browser re: "safe" browsing?
@mle I read a news article this year, where a policeman gave advice about how to avoid phishing. His foremost advice was to check if the web address starts with https:// because "only certified organizations are able to get a certificate for https".
I'm thinking about stopping my #matrix server, as I find it too heavy to maintain and I'm not using any of the benefits of matrix federated architecture. I don't participate in any public rooms (even the one I joined) except a private one I have with friends. Also as a bridge to IRC which is cool but just a nice to have…
I want to move to something lighter and simpler, just so I can host a private discussion room with friends (but has to be end to end encrypted, which remove #IRC unfortunately).
#xmpp seems as complex as matrix (is it lighter though?) and too far from my limited needs anyway… I used to host a #mattermost instance, but it is too close to slack UI to my licking and didn't enjoy it too much…
Not sure there is a good alternative for me (insisting on for me, because I know matrix is great for many others).
@bacardi55 XMPP servers are much, much lighter than Matrix. It's basically just keeping TCP connections open and routing messages to the right one. You shouldn't even notice it's running resource wise. I run Prosody for my family, currently 34 connections open, and the memory usage is 9MiB.
I'll tell you all, a whole LOT of people on the #Fediverse (especially those on bigger instances) that I have respect for are showing their true colors over these last couple of days and it's really a shame.
It's like they don't even acknowledge Meta/FB's history of doing business plus deep down, they give you know what about the #openweb these days.
@ploum@joeo10 This may be true, but when Google stopped federating, people should have insisted on XMPP compatibility. Instead they accepted the walled gardens that are popular today. Still I see lots of recommendations to use Signal (a walled garden) or Matrix (a non-standard protocol funded by venture capital) instead of XMPP.
