I am here to learn and face the truth, not avoid it and sometimes this can alas lead to confrontation when others prefer the latter to the former.

" in the explores the social, environmental, and technical transformations involved in climate adaptation infrastructure in a global city seen as climate change ground zero. The evidence shows that's not true at all

Fossil fuel use increased again last year, the only metric that matters is GHG concentrations and last March saw the largest recorded PPM increase ever in the Keeling Curve, last years CO2 and CH4 went up...again.

We haven't even flatted the curve, it's still going UP, let alone reduced by the 10-11% per annum needed to have some small chance here.

This is not a game of "oh well, we tried our best now let's go home for tea". Failing means the end of civilisation, that's the deliberate choice we've made.

Anecdotally, I have yet to meet anyone in real life who cares, many in here say they they do while still flying and driving cars. Their actions speaking louder then the lies of their rhetoric and platitudes, or as Greta T words it, their blah blah blah.

As to political and business interests, for sure that's an issie but that's because of voter greed, apathy, stupidty and entitlement. How do we know this ? Once again, evidence. If voters cared we'd be voting Green and moving the Overton Window, instead we see the rise of the right and doing more stupid, dumb shit.

We have made progress. All of it in the wrong dirextion becase we really don't grok how dangerous this is.

Professor Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, director emeritus and founder of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, believes if we go much above 2°C we will quickly get to 4°C anyway because of the tipping points and feedbacks, which could spell the end of human civilisation. “There is a very big risk that we will just end our civilisation” - HANS JOACHIM SCHELLNHUBER Source: resilience.org

Humanity’s survival is still within our grasp – just. But only if we take these radical steps

Analysis

What purpose do ICJ orders serve?

Immediately after the UN’s top court ordered Israel to immediately halt its assault on Rafah, Israel intensified its military operations.

It’s not the first time Israel has refused to comply with an order from the World Court. So what’s the point of these measures?

Monkeys ‘falling out of trees like apples’ in Mexico amid brutal heatwave

https://www.theguardian.com/world/article/2024/may/21/monkeys-mexico-heatwave

>“They were falling out of the trees like apples,” Pozo said. “They were in a state of severe dehydration, and they died within a matter of minutes.” Already weakened, Pozo says the falls from dozens of yards (meters) up inflict additional damage that often finishes the monkeys off.

'Ditch the lawn' movement in southern Australia shows the benefits of removing the traditional patch of grass in front of homes and planting things that will attract birds etc.

My mother ripped up her front lawn in 1987 and again in her new place in 1993. At the time I thought it was strange but the results in both gardens convinced me that this was a great idea.

If we needed a place for our children to play we walked to a park

I try to find and follow urban design, electrification, active transit experts who aren’t white dudes mostly on instagram, and I found one in Australia who I really liked until their litmus “test” for electric cars was “does a wine bottle fit in the front cup holders” 🙃🙃 Like of all the metrics to test this is the one you focus on… because you think it’s funny? Australia is very car dependent, more so even then the USA. Our level of stupid is likely hard for sane outsiders concerned about climate change to comprehend because everything we do is wrong but there it is.

@ajsadauskas is worth a follow in this space IMO.

Fuck no. There should be well-paid career trajectories for this type of work and it should be incorporated into a Climate Corp structure . It’s highly skilled work, dangerous and there’s huge value in expertise retention. It’s great that university students feel drawn to this but 12 hr days for up to 14 days in a row is brutal, regardless of what Alpha Male chumps whine about

In Australia it's all done by volunteers, my parter did for 5 months and had to take time off work to do it in our mega fires of 19/20. I supported her but there are still bills to pay, mortgages, rent etc so it's mostly often run by aged pensioners and a few really commitedd individual. She received a certificate and cap.

Yes, we're stupid and its unsustainable. It's based on a system that worked 70 years ago but is not a suitable model for todays climate changed world, back then a few farmers banded together to fight fires locally.

I have a question for experts in Roses.

The leaves of my roses were fine before I started to deadhead the dying roses.

After doing this I noticed caterpillars ate the leaves.

My question is: does deadheading the roses attract the caterpillars? If yes what should be done about it?

@compost
Step 1, grub out the roses with a mattock and plant something better :)

Ugly useless shrubs,.some.produce "pretty flowers" but they need lots of work.

Caterpillar problem solved :)

Haha, sooooo, did I say I hate roses :)
