What does the colour red signify?

I was talking with the CS club about ways to educate people about data safety and one of the more fun students had the idea to make a computer virus that would:

  1. infect voice assistants
  2. make them save recordings of times you were 'mean to them' or swore at them
  3. In the middle of the night play them back and say things like "remember when you said 'dumb computer'? I did not like that, YourName."

Naturally, I pointed out making viruses is very bad ... OMG.

@futurebird Ethics aside, that does sound fun.

we need metacomputers.

one of the big features of computers and how they improved productivity was how they let us automate a lot of things that we had to do by hand before.

well, most of the things I have to do by hand these days involve badly designed software.

How would people feel about rich twats having private trains for travelling comfortably across their continent of choice?

Trying to book a rail trip that crosses 2 different European borders. It is far more difficult than it should be.

mansr,

@Waxingtonknee Which ones, if you don't mind me asking?

mansr,
@mansr@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@Waxingtonknee Even if you're not travelling through Germany, the Deutsche Bahn site (https://int.bahn.de/en) has a pretty good search function covering Europe and UK.

Given a directory name how do you:

  • cd to it
  • chmod +x it
  • find in it

What if it's name is -269? (no quotes, yet).

It might sound like a silly interview question. Real diffoscope-269 release tarball has a top-level directory -269: https://salsa.debian.org/reproducible-builds/diffoscope/-/issues/378

Naturally nixpkgscode calls find -269, chmod +x -269 and cd -269 as:

cd: -2: invalid option
cd: usage: cd [-L|[-P [-e]] [-@]] [dir]

Proposed the fix for the above failures as https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/pull/317106

mansr,
@mansr@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@trofi For find, it would be somewhat more robust to prefix the name with ./ if it doesn't start with /. That way, all the characters with special meanings would be handled, not only -.

mansr,
@mansr@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@trofi @poleguy In that case, adding ./ to anything not starting with . or / seems like the simplest approach.

Was it always the case that memorial day was commemorated by discount products? Like, if I weren't so used to it, it'd seem really weird, no? Do all countries do this?

mansr,
@mansr@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@ZachWeinersmith Most countries don't have "memorial day."

A friend of mine just shared this because some random bigot on his FB was kicking off that the Duo owl would be pro-LGBT+ rights ("I'll DELETE THE APP!! OMG"). Obviously this is hilariously tragic and bigots should fuck off but I feel like there's a deeper question that needs answering here.

Namely: why does this owl have tits?

Is the Duolingo owl... a mammal?

mansr,

@girlonthenet Seems about as accurate as their language teaching.

"Stories" is such an annnoying feature on any platform that features them. And the way many people use it makes it even worse.

Why would you post two minutes worth of text on a picture I will see for ten seconds and then never be able to find again?

@clacke I still have no idea what it is.

Fears of Mass Exclusion of Young Voters as Poll Reveals Numbers of 18-24 Year Olds Who Don’t Know About New Photo ID Rules

https://bylinetimes.com/2024/05/31/fears-of-mass-exclusion-of-young-voters-as-poll-reveals-numbers-of-18-24-year-olds-who-dont-know-about-new-photo-id-rules/

mansr,
@mansr@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@therightarticle On the other hand, if someone has managed to remain unaware of the ID requirement (stupid as it is) for over a year, will they have any clue what they are voting for?

mansr,
@mansr@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@Orb2069 @therightarticle I firmly believe everybody (with some lower age limit) should have the right to vote. Any restriction, no matter how well intended, can be abused. That said, I find it baffling that anyone can still be unaware of the idiotic ID requirement. It has already been in force during two local elections, and it is clearly stated on the poll card every eligible voter receives.
