Queer hacker girl/muscle girl.

Cursed systems appreciator who has spent a lot of time thinking about CI/dev tools/platform eng.

Frequently interested in things people think are "too difficult" or "witchcraft": analog electronics design, music, chemistry/materials science, qualia, math?

Look, I suppose that global search can be used to harass people, but the lack of it really makes it hard to find where someone later apologized for something they did that's going around in screenshots. There's a hell of a lot of "fog of war" on the fediverse.

Short version of what people need to know: if you're installing or operating "blacklight" bulbs that don't have an opaque phosphor coating inside the tube, and don't have the characteristic purple-blue color, you're installing a germicidal UV-C lamp that humans should never be exposed to.

Did you choose your current favorite source code editor/IDE in a time of optimism or burnout?

I've been using VSCode since a point 2-3 years back where I was having serious burnout-related trouble focusing and I asked @astraluma one day, "so, what do people who do python a lot use?" I forget what her other recommendation was, but VSCode was the most generally applicable for Python and other languages, so I went with it.

Technical words that sound worse to people outside of that particular field:

degenerate (e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Degeneracy#Science,_mathematics,_and_medicine)
regime (e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regime_shift)

I'm trying to think of others. Please no outright slurs, we can let those die.

(Edit: folks on Discord mentioned:
"reaping zombie children" (Unix process management)
"performed an illegal operation" (computers in general)
"exploit" (compare resource usage vs. computer security)
)

Has anyone ever written a sci-fi story based on the notion that the ideal future military is a decentralized insurgency, and in its success, it spells the end of centralized state power entirely?

I think that could be fun to read.

Got to thinking this after reading actual military publication, https://www.armyupress.army.mil/Journals/Military-Review/English-Edition-Archives/May-June-2023/Graveyard-of-Command-Posts/ and this is moderately interesting, but it's obviously not within their scope to ask about the possible obsolescence of the present political structure.

It's fascinating to me that I've always been somewhat aware of security topics, even if I've never worked in an overtly-security role in software engineering.

I think for me the reasoning was always: safety and reliability are important, security can often be a limiting factor in those areas, therefore, I should care about it.

And apparently some people are just going through a sw eng career thinking that's not their problem?

I'm still making fairly solid newbie gains since increasing my lifting volume and protein intake 3 months ago. Still adding 10 pounds to lower body lifts and 5 pounds to upper body lifts every 1.5 weeks or so. I think it's partly that I'm (re)learning good technique too. I can start to feel the upper body progression starting to run out soon.

Anyway its a super exciting feeling to be constantly thinking, "tommorow I'm going to deadlift 265 for 3 reps!" And tommorow is now today.

It's egg day

No, it's leg day, I'm doing a deadlift PR attempt.

It's a lot of fun being somewhat stronger than most other people, I can highly recommend the experience

As a white transfem, I would like other white transfems to remember that even though our oppression seems so big, some of that may be that you're new to your oppression being a publicly-acknowledged phenomenon. We were oppressed in the closet, but being able to talk about it in a thoughtful and compassionate way with other oppressed people takes learning and practice. There are those in society who have been experiencing that for a long time.

Every time I look at these things, I wonder why projects like WASM-4 (160x160) or PICO-8 (128x128) make the display resolution so small?!?

NES was effectively 256x240.

I was thinking of making a list of types of software that most people think is "too difficult" and they leave to "the experts", e.g.:

  • geometric modeling kernel
  • integrated circuit floorplanning
  • cryptography
  • compiler backends
  • database query planners
  • electromagnetic simulation (antennas, transmission lines, microstrip design, etc)
    ...

Oh, it's all applied math.

(As an aside, I just want to note that there's some really difficult work to be done in accessibility and UX too.)

Choosing to become the rare kind of trans girl who uses her (not pitch-shifted) voice in her music.

@recursive@hachyderm.io avatar

Until about a decade ago, the gatekeeping around medical transition expected trans people to attempt to present as their identified (binary) gender before any medical transition was allowed, including hormone replacement therapy.

What's completely ridiculous about that, to me, is that I've been transitioning for 4.5 years and I'm still not sure I'll truly understand my gender until after I fix all the fixable gender dysphoria with medical transition steps.

This thread about gendered marketing and clothes really makes me think about the particular choices I make as a woman who's 99th percentile for height and an outlier on a lot of other body dimensions. Plus weird preferences about comfort and ability to do things.

e.g. If I'm not wearing athletic clothes, I often wear women's cargo pants because not only do they look cool, I can easily have the hip
mobility to do a deep squat.

An interesting thing about transfem voice training is that, I think for most humans who haven't deliberately practiced vocal skills or learned about gendered perception of human voices, it can seem initially very impossible.

And my experience is that its hard to do both well and quickly. But you can work on it in relatively small increments at any point.

So as I've gotten less afraid of being bad it, I've gotten much better at it.

[Digging in the Livejournal archive]

Apparently 22 years ago I was playing "The Sims" and watching
"Serial Experiments Lain".

I was also much more grumpy than I am today, so don't let anyone tell you that's something that increases with age.

Its probably because I'm autistic and trans, but I can't understand how people can actually read/watch news media and not just have it simply drive themselves into burnout faster without appreciable benefit.

On some level I think it's kind of a bummer that nearly all trans healthcare is still just prescribing bioidentical hormones and not exploring the uses of all the known SARMs and SERMs to let people tweak secondary sex characteristics at a finer granularity. This isn't merely a bias towards safety, this is a bias against letting people experiment with biological gender in ways the patriarchy thinks is threatening.

I have now watched multiple videos of people making wood buckets, both skilled coopers doing things using mostly traditional tools (drawknives, etc.) and modern woodworkers who do everything they can possibly do with a table saw.

And the efficacy of the old way is so much better that it really makes me feel things.

Anyway, here's another of the good technique videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4kB7JOVkqw

I mean, you can do well with modern tools - a lot of modern tools (barrels) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kaXvFw8ve_I

I'm not sure I agree with the angst about .zip TLD. Feels like it's the fault of many of us that we conflated files and URLs and made user interfaces not very explicit about the parts of URLs, etc.

The grip strips I put down in our tub aren't staying. I think I need to do it again with even better surface prep. My suspicion is residual dimethicone from hair conditioner. Trying to decide which things I should use to clean next time:

  • Dawn dish detergent (seems like sodium laurel sulphate is known to strip silicones from hair)
  • TSP (traditionally a good choice for cleaning for surface prep).

(followed by rinse and thorough dry.)
