The only feeling I have about starship is dread.

They want to use that to launch batches of HUNDREDS of Starlinks at once. And guess where all those Starlinks will end up? The pieces that don't make it to the ground will end up in our upper atmosphere, screwing up the stratosphere, the ozone layer, who knows what else because SpaceX isn't required to do any environmental assessments of this.

Shit. Maybe a good time to post this essay I wrote yet again: https://theconversation.com/an-astronomers-lament-satellite-megaconstellations-are-ruining-space-exploration-215653

If Apple releases yet another major iOS and macOS without a dedicated Password manager app instead of that random engineer’s shitty little Shortcut that launches a system preference for you…

You know their commitment to keeping you safe is lip service.

I tested the advice that marking classes in as final improves build times. I generated 2 swift files that each have 1000 (trivial) classes: one with each marked as final, the other without. I built each file 10 times, recording the build time for that file.

Marking classes as final does improve build times. By about 7%. The difference is just outside 1 standard deviation, so I think it’s statistically significant. But I’m not a trained statistician.

I used Xcode 15.2/swift 5.9 for this.

Or alternatively you could boycott this and not support tech journalists who happily carry water for Apple execs and are blatantly worker hostile.

quick and dirty "debug renderer" - dump .obj from test code and import it into blender. pic related: frustum culling.
(the frustum is asymmetric which is why it looks weird)

aras,
@aras@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@nicebyte nice life hack :) Now that (since blender 4.1?) you can just drag & drop an obj file onto blender, it even saves a click or two.

In the same way most of us say “goodbye” without realising it derives from “god be with ye”, maybe one day people will end conversations with “likensubscribe”

If you live in the UK or USA, you need to understand one thing about the coming election:

    You need to vote defensively.

Neither of the main parties are appealing. But if you don't vote for the lesser evil you may end up helping a totalitarian horror get elected.

Hold your nose and goddamn vote, dammit. THEN go on protests. Because if you don't vote for the lesser evil, the victor will welcome your protests with bullets.

The prize for political purity this time round is a shallow grave.

Couple of iPhone shots, taken at Crab Cove in Alameda yesterday. These are California Ground Squirrels, and they live in the rocks at the edge of the beach there. Not quite tame, but very used to people so they let you get reasonably close (close enough to get clear photos with the iPhone 15 Pro 3x camera).

These were taken using portrait mode, providing artificial depth of field.

At this point the conclusion is inescapable that the IDF repeatedly has “mishaps” resulting in the sudden violent death of dozens of Gaza civilians because they have zero interest in avoiding the sudden violent deaths of dozens of Gaza civilians.

Never mind the dumpster fire of a human being that is , why on earth do people still buy anything from ?

We have years of evidence that the company is an absolute joke. Incompetence wrapped in hubris, thoroughly marinated with not just a lack of care, but unchecked disdain for its customers.

I've made site which lists all WWDC talks since 2000.

It doesn't host the videos, but has some details for all the sessions, organised per year.
I find it very useful to get an overview of a technology, to figure out which year introduced some new feature.

All the data on this site is also available as a single JSON file.

Apple has uploaded a new batch of videos from last years' WWDC to YouTube. Now that most videos from 2023 are on YouTube, I've added a YouTube embed in WWDC Index.

So now you can watch videos directly inside the website. But of course you can still customize the inline video player to point to your own source of videos, for older videos.
