Lukewarm take:

When I see general* "security advice" that mentions "do not use public WiFi" or "use a VPN", I am immediately suspicious about all other advice offered.

Yes, a decade ago that was a consideration, because most sites were not using HTTPS. Credentials were flying cleartext on the wire.

Today, almost all sites use HTTPS. Doesn't mean the risk is zero, but it's way lower.

*) "general" meaning "without a very specific threat model in mind", meant for general public, etc.

steve,
@steve@mastodon.nexusuk.org avatar

@rysiek Also worth noting that several VPNs have been caught with their pants down collecting data from the traffic they have been routing - many ISPs and public wifi providers likely have better data protection practices than some VPN providers, so you may well be better off without the VPN.

steve,
@steve@mastodon.nexusuk.org avatar

@rysiek Certainly for free VPNs you need to be asking "how is this funded?", but I certainly wouldn't rule out paid VPNs being just as badly behaved.

New post: Looking at our first year in

Our solar install was connected and went active a year ago today.

In this post, I look at its performance over that time as well as the savings we've achieved through
and events

@ben "The inverter sends generation and usage stats to Soliscloud" - as always, I have concerns that the hardware will outlast the cloud service. Why can this stuff not be done entirely locally?!?

What is it with CPU numbering conventions? It seems that they have purposefully designed them to be as obtuse and incomparable as possible...

Has anyone got any recommendations for low power consumption hardware? I'm currently using an MSI Cubi N, which is very long in the tooth and way to slow these days. I need plenty of RAM and support for at least 2 SSDs (preferably both NVMe). Possibly type stuff...

steve,
@steve@mastodon.nexusuk.org avatar

@kontrollierterWahnwitz My current MSI Cubi has an Intel N3060 processor and 8GB RAM, which was fine when I bought it but these days its running 3 virtual machines and is well overloaded. So looking to replace it - it's an always-on machine so want something with low power consumption (I had considered running several Raspberry Pis, but I think I'd like to stick with x86)

steve,
@steve@mastodon.nexusuk.org avatar

@kontrollierterWahnwitz Just looking on Aliexpress and there are some nice looking AMD Ryzen boxes for not very much, which pack far more punch. The TDP is much higher, but I have no way to estimate the power consumption when it is sat mostly idle.

Well that's pretty shit isn't it... In are "improving" their baked beans & sausages by padding them out with cheap wheat flour. Lots of people with disease on the bird site pointing out that this means they can't eat them. Heinz is just responding to their messages with a generic "yes, they aren't free any more" reply, basically completely ignoring their concerns.

That's not what's happening.

At this point, I don't even question Labour policies. They will have a shit load that is bad or stupid, I am sure.

All politicians are problematic. But at this stage, after so many years of so much shit, I have to say "things can only get better".

And I say that as someone that is running a company, with many staff, and many taxes to pay, knowing I have to seriously consider tax changes that Labour may bring to my personal detriment.

The country needs change, any change!

steve,
@steve@mastodon.nexusuk.org avatar

@revk @srtcd424 Octopus are probably the single reason I support privatised energy. I can't imagine a nationalised organisation doing the kind of innovative stuff that they are doing. But National Grid, OTOH should surely be public.

steve,
@steve@mastodon.nexusuk.org avatar

@revk @tripplehelix problem is, if you vote for a shit party because they are not quite as shit as the other party, the one thing you're guaranteed is that, one way or the other, we'll be ruled by a shit party.

🆕 blog! “Is it rude to make a profit from your friends?”

You're in a restaurant with a group of friends. The waiter won't let you split the bill, so you offer to pay for it on your card and have your friends send you their share. How much would you charge them for that service? That sounds absurd, right? OK, you might agree to split the […]

You gotta think...

If a star ship keeps its "number" when a new one of the same name replaces it...

Like 1701 -> 1701-A, etc.

That means they created 1700 star ships not call "Enterprise" first (after "NX-01").

Why would they do that?

What was the massive lul in ships called "Enterprise" caused by?

Another large language model scraper blocked. This graph is from a site which runs a tool generating answers for people doing important research work. The AI scraper sent hundreds of thousands of lookup requests evading rate limits by using about a thousand IPs and pinned multiple webservers at 100% CPU (graph from one attached). This is a massive waste of electricity to train a hallucination machine.

Well this is going well... has not renewed its own LetsEncrypt certificate, so I can't access the web interface. I can find no instructions telling me how the hell to renew it manually from the commandline, and no logs telling me WTF it hasn't renewed...

steve,
@steve@mastodon.nexusuk.org avatar

@nlpbot HAOS, so everything is in a container. I've tried manually starting the letsencrypt container, but it just exits without doing anything (and without logging anything useful)

steve,
@steve@mastodon.nexusuk.org avatar

@nlpbot Yep, looks like manually starting the container now has renewed it, so possibly HA just hasn't been running the container. In any case, its not helpful when all the instructions just tell you to use the web interface that isn't accessible :)

@nlpbot ah, key bit from the documentation that I missed "Certificates are not renewed automatically by the plugin".. really helpful!

I wonder if B&Q ever considered how much their website harms their brick & mortar stores. I used to check the B&Q website before going to the store to see if they had what I want in stock, but now the website is a "market place", which means 95% of the stuff on there is never available in store - its mostly sold online and shipped by third parties. There's no way to filter out this crap, so now I can't check if I'll have a wasted journey, so I go to their competitors' stores instead.

steve,
@steve@mastodon.nexusuk.org avatar

@NAB Oddly enough, the website lets you filter out things that can't be delivered directly to your home, but won't let you filter out stuff that isn't in the store. Its almost like they are trying to push everything online, which completely misses what I've always used B&Q for.

steve,
@steve@mastodon.nexusuk.org avatar

@NAB Yeah, Screwfix and B&Q are both owned by Kingfisher - their stock isn't identical, but there's a lot of overlap and Screwfix is usually cheaper.

And Wickes used to be part of Travis Perkins but I think they have split apart now.
