I'm sure it's because I'm only using it half-correctly, but wow is the Ableton piano roll a PITA. (This would probably be easier if I could trust my timing on a keyboard well enough to just record the MIDI and quantize.)

@etherdiver Yeah, I'm mousing it in, and making heavy use of the "Duplicate" right-click item. It's lots of chords, so one note at a time is only so handy.

What are people using for alternatives? I don't need distro or anything else, just a place to host audio where people can easily stream it. I'm game to host my own, if setting it up isn't a huge pain.

More and more I'm finding SC to be a magnet for spammers and scammers, and I'm looking for an out.

@keefmarshall @ddlyh The Faircamp sites I’ve checked so far have a major downside: Streaming doesn’t seem to work in Firefox on Mac. (Worked just fine in Chrome, but I’m trying to avoid Chrome.)

@keefmarshall Here’s one that worked on Chrome but not Firefox: https://faircamp.fstateaudio.com/humbug23/ Play button shows when I mouse over the track number, but does nothing.

This is with Firefox 121.0.1 (with no add-ons/plug-ins) on macOS 14.1.1. Clearing cache did not change anything.

BUT...

When I try it in private browsing mode, all is well - play button works and I get the little amplitude line visualizer.

So, probably something with how I’m set up.

@keefmarshall Okay, so, I was wrong: I had one add-on activated. It was the Google Analytics Opt-Out Add-On (by Google). Deactivating it allows Faircamp streaming to work. It doesn’t seem to cause this problem with any other streaming website (Funkwhale sites work, jam.coop is happy, &c).

Anyway, I have a fix now. I’m kind of on the static site generator train anyway with my Pelican blog, so I’m leaning toward Faircamp.

    Substack has decided to be slightly less hypocritical -- though no more coherent about what its policy actually is, which is the norm in social media.

    This will likely defuse the Nazi bar issue for semi-critics who were looking for reasons to stick with the platform.

    My position hasn't changed: I won't renew the paid subscriptions for newsletters that remain there, and am unsubscribing from the rest.

    Newsletter authors: I am paying for subscriptions on other platforms.

    I hope everyone had a great holiday. I'm back in the saddle from a full week of slacking my ass off. Not gonna lie, it was great.

    One of my projects today is to lay out strategies to continue building this community in '24 - including creative ways to establish our "identity" as a regional instance.

    What would you like to see on in '24? What improvements would you suggest? Remember that this is our community. Let's build it together!

    @thekitmalone @cliffwade @brian @beardedtechguy Smaller networks will always lose use case #1 to networks with 2B monthly actives. Recall, though, that FB originally bootstrapped as use case #2 (alumni networking). If you can find a way to tap into existing meatspace networks and self/common interest that isn't served well by big players, that could be the lever, if you can crack marketing/awareness.

    @thekitmalone @cliffwade @brian @beardedtechguy Also, whatever you can do to customize your instance's experience to make onboarding and making first connections easier, you should do. Mastodon is still "Twitter for Linux users", and that's a real adoption problem.
