Mastodon feels like the most independent social network so far.

@liroyleshed

agreed. I wonder if the structure of means that will never actually be very decentralized.

An internet for writers

The next step in online social media will be group blogs that support the APIs needed to integrate with not only the Fediverse, but other non-AP services that have their own APIs.

Each one will have a theme, a voice, not all writers in agreement of course, but sharing a similar perspective, context, point of view.

wjmaggos,
@wjmaggos@liberal.city avatar

@ben @davew

we also need something like #Pocket to become a standard. like a podcatcher for articles. competing services. pulling in the most popular articles in your social graph. and a way to directly pay writers.

So, I have the feeling that the is a very left-wing dominated space. Let's see if that feeling is correct.

Please boost for reach.

I consider myself:

wjmaggos,

@ainmosni

it's a problem. I'm left but I want everyone here except harassers. much of the left today considers views they disagree with and that which they consider misinfo to be so personally painful to encounter for some (or likely to lead to real world harm) such that cutting off access to it is proper for everybody. rampant defederating is justified.

many on the right also want to shut down voices they don't like, but they do it via edgelordism. saying rude shit so others leave or STFU.

Deplatforming is out of favor in Silicon Valley. But it works.

A new study in Nature finds that Twitter's mass suspension of 70,000 QAnon-linked accounts after Jan. 6 meaningfully reduced the overall circulation of fake and hyperpartisan news on the platform. https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2024/06/06/twitter-jan-6-deplatforming-misinfo-nature-study/

wjmaggos,

@willoremus

but it means owners (and the people who can squeeze them) get to make that decision. same with getting the algorithms to boost who/what they want. that's why decentralization matters.

Not liking the terminology in this OpenID spec: "A federation can be expressed as an agreement between parties that trust each other."

As a non-technical example, the US of A is a federation. This implies that Texas and California trust each other. Doubtful.

It's also not the same way we think about the "federation" part of the Fediverse, although I'm not sure that we've ever attempted to crisply define what we mean by federation and not.

wjmaggos,

@J12t

sounds right to me. trust the other server not to let their users cause problems for the users on my server. opt out not in cause we assume good faith. more like the articles of confederation than the constitution. no greater authority that we all have a say in.

I'm insincere for asking why people who believe the election was stolen don't do more, yet you go around making images to piss people off. at least you're transparent about this hypocrisy.

wjmaggos,
@wjmaggos@liberal.city avatar

why do you care that Georgia Dream was elected? because democracy matters. self government matters. that our government lies about who is or isn't democratic and when that's important, doesn't mean it's not important.

In ancient hunter-gatherer societies, some people evolved a particular hyper-awareness of their surroundings. They are able to be maintain a low-level awareness of everything around them, and to very quickly separate what's important and deserves attention from what is unimportant. They are able to easily switch tasks and react on instinct to immediately deal with a new situation, often before others have had time to think about it. These hyper-aware individuals were critical to the survival of the tribe, when a predator or danger might appear at any moment, and that quick instinctual action might mean the difference between life and death.

Unfortunately, these individuals sacrificed the ability to focus for long periods on mundane tasks they found uninteresting, even if they knew it had to be done.

Modern society has far fewer immediate dangers. Value is placed on the ability to focus on the mundane; for its people to behave like automatons. There is little place in modern society for people with this hyperawareness trait.

And so, modern society now diagnoses these people as somehow "broken". We invented a name, "ADHD", and called what they are a disorder. From early childhood, we give them mind-altering drugs to transform their personality into something society finds more acceptable. We break our children's minds, because we don't want to deal with them as they evolved to be.

I think the fat acceptance movement comes from a similar thought process, that some evolved to have a slower metabolism etc that was actually adaptive to pre modern times when food was scarce. but some conservatives mock it.

there's always another way to look at things. I don't get the anger in our politics, except at people who refuse to metaphorically try on other people's shoes. Or reject compromise. Or worst of all, build their brand/business off being an asshole.

I don't like the idea of the Stars and Stripes touching the ground. Or not being the highest flag flown. Or being incorporated in the fabric of clothing to a lesser degree. It feels wrong. But I also love the idea of flying it upside down, kneeling during the anthem or burning it if you really have a reason for doing so. Family that served but also love the 1A. I like people to be serious about it I guess.
