    There's so much fear in the fediverse about bad admins/mods, and honestly it's no different to the days where we had forums with bad admins/mods.

    The problem is that largely for the past decade people have been in walled gardens either never thinking of moderation, or actively needing to work against moderation to exist.

    And you didn't have a choice, because you were locked into that provider & their moderation policies.

    On the fediverse we have more choice. Sometimes that means we're directly exposed to moderation activities, much like the forum days.

    If there's instances on the fediverse with whom you disagree with the moderation practices of, then don't recommend those instances, maybe don't federate with them(?) — it's okay

    We do need better tools and information about how a server moderates that can help people make a choice about where to call their home on the internet

    There are quite some reasons that leave me very cautious about Bluesky, one being for sure the fact there's one commercial entity currently backing this service / protocol, especially one that has risen from the same ecosystem that caused a lot of the trouble we do experience with current social media platforms. But, I've then and now been at odds with ActivityPub as a protocol, which gets worse the more I dig into it, and from that perspective, it seems the AT crowd gets a lot of things right, considered a lot of things that don't just seem obvious at least in the 2010s but actually surprising to see them missing from ActivityPub, a spec that has been established at roughly the same time: Full account portability (the idea of comparing personal data, conversations, comments, posts, ... to a github repository which "of course" you want to easily be able to take, backup, move around, ... seems both stunning and painfully trivial), support of custom domains for users (which Tumblr has already been supporting for years now), distributed curation and moderation (because most obviously community structures will be different to server or domain structures and not necessarily live on one instance exclusively) - in a way I really do hope they "show don't tell" by submitting that protocol to some standardization body anytime soon. Maybe this, too, could provide a good option for the "open" fediverse to counter the problems that might arise the very moment platforms like Meta / Threads fully embrace ActivityPub. (I also found it rather interesting to listen to what she had to say about why Meta might be more into ActivityPub than AT - being "server-centric" rather than "user-centric" - but that might just be a loose end of things.)

    In ancient hunter-gatherer societies, some people evolved a particular hyper-awareness of their surroundings. They are able to be maintain a low-level awareness of everything around them, and to very quickly separate what's important and deserves attention from what is unimportant. They are able to easily switch tasks and react on instinct to immediately deal with a new situation, often before others have had time to think about it. These hyper-aware individuals were critical to the survival of the tribe, when a predator or danger might appear at any moment, and that quick instinctual action might mean the difference between life and death.

    Unfortunately, these individuals sacrificed the ability to focus for long periods on mundane tasks they found uninteresting, even if they knew it had to be done.

    Modern society has far fewer immediate dangers. Value is placed on the ability to focus on the mundane; for its people to behave like automatons. There is little place in modern society for people with this hyperawareness trait.

    And so, modern society now diagnoses these people as somehow "broken". We invented a name, "ADHD", and called what they are a disorder. From early childhood, we give them mind-altering drugs to transform their personality into something society finds more acceptable. We break our children's minds, because we don't want to deal with them as they evolved to be.
