Our eldest daughter is starting elementary school in in April and we have to submit bank details for a direct debit for school fees

The debit system used is some local thing only supported by the local banks, and the application is done on paper.

There's a pre-filled out section for how the school is going to submit the debits with the options for

  • Paper ledger
  • Floppy Disk
  • Magneto-optical
  • DVD
  • Data transmission

I'm sad to say my daughters school did not choose floppy disk 😢

Are you feeling beach body ready?

kalleboo,
@kalleboo@bitbang.social avatar

@vga256 @billgoats I lived in Sweden before. It freezes first near the shoreline since the water is more shallow there (water keeps and moderates temperature well) and you can jump around and punch holes in it with your shoes it's great fun as a kid.

I hate sounding like the old guy in the room when I say things like "phone design used to be more fun". I mean, I AM the old guy in the room, but I hate SOUNDING like the old guy complaining about new tech.

Frosted gradients. Laser etched glossy. Bold primary color polycarb. Metal and leather. Different form factors and features... Sigh...

We didn't know how good we had it...

@SomeGadgetGuy @drahardja And you're talking about smartphones, which were always boring. Give me back the exciting feature phone days, where a literally transparent screen seemed like an exciting idea

(the Sony Ericsson Pureness was an actual product actually sold at retail)

A feature phone with a black and white transparent screen, showing a street behind a screen with a clock on it
A feature phone with a black and white transparent screen, showing a hand behind a menu
A feature phone with a black and white transparent screen, showing plants behind a boot logo

Merry Christmas everyone!

Here is "Christmas 87" by Brian Needham, a Mac program I remember from our Mac Classic back in the day.
I couldn't even find a reference to it online (just a reference from Ingemar Ragnemalm who made an inspired sequel in 1997) but managed to dig it up from an old backup CD-R.

Since I'm at my parents away from my machines, I'm cheating and using Infinite Mac to emulate it

Was there ever a way to make the sizes of files not be truncated in System 6 list view?

Update: Yes, there was! See next post.

kalleboo,
@kalleboo@bitbang.social avatar

@paulrickards I remember having some third party program that would tweak the System 6 Finder (probably editing some resource directly) to change stuff like column sizes/order. No recollection what it was called

If there's one thing AI is good at, it is making alt text for me. It may not be perfect, but it bloody darn works for me.

You could argue I am being lazy but it does a good job of describing stuff when I can’t

kalleboo,
@kalleboo@bitbang.social avatar

@SinclairSpeccy What are you using?

I’m terrible at describing things in text, that’s the reason I post a lot of images in the first place!

“I need a multi-terabytes configuration because with a few Xcodes, a few simulators, it adds up real quick”

Really⁉️ I have the current Xcode, Xcode beta, and Xcode n-1 installed when relevant, plus some simulators. It doesn’t take more than 150GB at most; We should stop using Xcode as a scapegoat to justify our materialistic impulses.

kalleboo,
@kalleboo@bitbang.social avatar

@layoutSubviews Yeah I reacted to that too. I have 1 TB and it's fine for iOS dev. Insisting on syncing your whole 2 TB photo library to your laptop seems like it's the real problem.

Whateve, rich people gonna rich

kalleboo,
@kalleboo@bitbang.social avatar

@layoutSubviews I just meant in their specific case, they probably have the wrong idea about how much storage is used by dev tools since they're using way more space on other stuff so they come to the wrong conclusion

“hey, we just passed landmark privacy regulations!”
“oh by the way we’re trying to mandate backdoors into every encryption scheme”
“we are forcing google, apple, and microsoft to stop locking down their ecosystems!”
“oh yeah we’re also trying to mandate backdoors in all browsers’ certificate stacks”
“anti-adblock is spyware ^_^ we’re suing youtube”

kalleboo,
@kalleboo@bitbang.social avatar

@starshine @apicultor It's cuz the EU has the commission that is assigned by the governments of each member country, and the EU parliament that is elected by the citizens of each member country.

Guess which one does the good stuff and which one does the bad stuff.

Kind of disappointing that the spatial video recording on the iPhone 15 Pro is only 1080p and 30fps. Aside from that resolution being pretty low, framerate makes such a big difference to 3D video. I guess this will improve in future phones.

kalleboo,
@kalleboo@bitbang.social avatar

@jamesthomson At least it's a bump from the 720p/15fps of me previous 3D camera!

I found the network rack gacha! Assumed it was so niche it would only be found in like Tokyo but there was one around my neck of the woods as well.

This is the cutest thing ever! Look at the little cables and cable management hoops, the PDU, all of it is so well-done!

kalleboo,
@kalleboo@bitbang.social avatar

It felt incomplete with just 3 parts (not enough to make it full height and it was missing a top part) so I went back to complete the set... Now it's perfect!
