This is an interesting example of green nudging. The word "Vegan" does indeed carry a lot of baggage that some people shy away from. If you label the same “Vegan” product as “Plant Based”, there is often less resistance.
@TomSwirly@andycarolan Vegan food makes me think of cooking from scratch. 1st cookbook was late ‘60, have ~74 now. There are many wonderful vegetarian recipe books.
Destroying the planet we live on -- the only planet we can live on -- is of course totally legal and even supported and subsidised by governments around the world (including #Scotland's).
But PROTESTING against destroying the planet? That's illegal. That's very, very illegal. Don't even think about doing that.
@tshirtman@simon_brooke@lienrag@pgcd@TomSwirly 80% of world trade moves by container ships. Their ports will be affected by small sea level rise. This summer’s hurricane season surges will probably disrupt some on the US East Coast.
@ai6yr@meganL Gasoline vapor explosions are why boats have explosion proof switches & sealed fans to use before starting engines. ‘60s Coast Guard safety classes for boaters used the word “sweet” to describe sniffing the vent to make sure.
@StillIRise1963 1 of the reasons I’m here is having been a lilly white frat boy in late ‘60s. It had been kicked out of a national for inducting a Black member. Nicknamed “Slug” from NYTimes article hailing them as “democratic sluggers”.
I read this long Reddit workaround for how to remove a non-removable riving knife from a table saw. There were like 10 steps, 3 custom parts, and number other considerations. I was about to get started when I read the comments and came across this (and saved about 2 days of time). This is why I DO read comments.
@shoq Had multiple ER visits from basic safety mistakes. Started woodworking in grade school in ‘59. Never considered any a manufacturer’s liability it was always the user & not the tool.
@FiveSeventeen Used to pick up my father at the train station in the evening. It was magical, bring a book or a magazine and the train would be on time. Don’t bring anything to read and the train would be late.
Similar to putting on rain gear and the squall misses, no protection and always were soaked.
What you’re really saying is that if you go to this school, keep your mouth shut and kiss enough ass, you too can be one of us. I wouldn’t want to be one of you. Not even a little bit.
Are some #insects evolving in response to light pollution?
"We find a stark decline in blacklight trap efficacy over 25 years of monitoring in Delaware, USA, mirrored over 10 years of monitoring in New Jersey, USA. While the precise causes of this decline remain a subject for discussion, the practical consequences are clear: insect conservationists cannot fully rely on long-term trends from entomological light traps."
I have always defended windows because I vehemently disliked the closed ecosystem of Apple. But that doesn’t mean I didn’t appreciate the benefits. And I confess, I naively assumed Windows would have evolved away from early windows by now. Nope. Same old windows and its myriad of byzantine complexities that probably costs the world trillions of dollars a year in lost productivity. But it will stay entrenched for a long time to come because, because… well, because everything sucks today.
@shoq Used many operating systems, single & multiuser since 1980. Have an 8-core Ubuntu & an ARM Debian notebook running Linux still. Work in 1984-5 had a TRS Xenix box w/dual 8” floppies. All of the command line tools from Bell Labs Unix still work on macOS.
95% of time is now a phone, boxes are mostly just storage now.
Coachella beverage prices (snagged randomly off Instagram). Note: only two of these items are hydrating (water, hydration drink). Curious what sizes that water/hydration drink are, we could calculate the damage to your pocketbook for staying properly hydrated in 94F weather for two days. 🤔 UPDATE: three items, apparently alcohol free beer is ALSO hydrating 🤯 #Coachella
“ 'The changes are profound. And they are happening everywhere,' said US soundscape recordist Bernie Krause, who has taken more than 5,000 hours of recordings from seven continents over the past 55 years. He estimates that 70% of his archive is from habitats that no longer exist.”
