About by PCalc for visionOS is now available!

Perhaps the most pointless app on Vision Pro, but still quite fun to play with. This is a complete remake of the original PCalc About screen in VR. It's basically me experimenting with what's possible today with RealityKit, over-engineering things as usual, and then for some inexplicable reason actually shipping it. I hope you enjoy it!

ADHD medication week 3? Still titrating dosing. It's working well.

I've really let a few personal hobbies lapse - as in they're still sitting where they were 3 weeks ago. I think they're things I did less because I liked them, and more because they were some of the few things I could really deep-dive into and manufacture focus. That's probably still developing though.

Other aspects of the same thing I'm hammering into like mad. Is it too late to move from print/art into palaeontology?

AirPod cases are the enemy of hotel room keys. Same with iPad cases.

Both have magnets, both will erase your room keys.

My 2 cents:

ALL car OSes (CarPlay, Android Auto, etc.) should support all users:

  • My phone should connect automatically as soon as I get in the car.
  • The interface should be recognizable, easy to navigate, and fast.
  • No crashes. Ever.
  • All my apps should be supported, especially music (Apple Music and/or Spotify) podcasts (no matter the app) and Maps (Google/Apple).

If not, it's just green bubble, blue bubble all over again.

Back in the day, phone numbers used to belong to carriers. So if you switched carriers, you changed phone numbers.

Feels like the same situation with social networks.

If I move to a new social network, all my followers have my "old number".

Imagine if there was a level of indirection (like an Apple ID or an email) that always led to my current social network.

Impossible? Dumb idea? 🤔

@davemark IMnsHO, the problem for social workers is bigger than the phone number. Once you get past the exchange, it isn’t hard to look to see where the line number gets routed. With an SNS, there isn’t a central clearing system for ids. If I want to send you a message m, do I send it to @davemark, @davemark or something else? Then we get to the underlying protocols. The telephone system really only has one protocol and that gets converted to whatever your handset needs.

Apple Music question:

Is there a way to quickly switch between two different playlists without losing context?

I’ve got a drumming playlist and I like to be able to go to it and continue playing from the last song I was playing. And then I’d like to go back to listening to the playlist of music I was playing.

Again, without losing context.

Suggestions? There an easy way to do this?

@davemark That is the biggest problem I’ve seen with Apple Music. The second is that you can’t continue a playlist from another device.

Thinner bezel is always a good thing.

BUT:

I would much rather see a thinner bezel on my iPad. And on my Mac. My iPhone bezel is already pretty skinny.

Also, maybe an unpopular opinion, but I would love a "from the ground up" reimagining of iPadOS.

@davemark One problem that I’ve had with my 15 Pro is it doesn’t have anything like “palm rejection.” When I hold it in my non-dominant hand, the corner is usually resting in the center of my palm. This means that the muscle around my thumb is usually touching the screen when reach across the screen to touch something.

It isn’t a problem with my dominant hand because I hold the phone differently.

This is a great tip.

As @gruber suggested, this should be part of the Apple TV standard, required for all apps that support CC.

I love the idea of triple-tap the back of your phone to toggle captions. Should be able to tell Siri to do the same. In ALL services.

@davemark I love how some apps (Crunchyroll) will not show captions on dubbed versions of a program. They treat dubbed and subbed versions as completely different programs. When those same programs are shown on Hulu, you can toggle audio language and subtitles (and subtitle language) at will.
