Bill banning Pride flag would make showing support for LGBTQ a ‘political viewpoint' (www.rawstory.com)

A Florida Republican lawmaker's bill declares showing support for LGBTQ people is a "political viewpoint," despite the existence of LGBTQ Democrats, Republicans, independents, and entirely unaffiliated and non-political LGBTQ people. The goal of GOP State Rep. David Borrero's legislation is to ban al...

CatLover12,

My city flew a pride flag once and our city council turned around and banned all flags other than the US and state flag. We used to fly many other flags for different heritage months and other reasons, but now they aren't allowed because a few people found a rainbow flag offensive.

Just a fun question about : if you are making, say, a garment, main color deep rich chocolate brown, & you're choosing other colors as accents or go-withs or whatever, what colors do you choose?

Just curious because I think my sense might be odd.

CatLover12,

@LucyKemnitzer My immediate thoughts was a rusty orange, or a deep blue.

My 1 year old son has just started making noises when he plays with cars. He doesn’t say “brrrrm” or similar, he says “eeeee”. We own electric cars.

Think of it, a future where cars, buses, trucks, tractors go “eeeee” instead of “brrrrrm” in the minds of children.

CatLover12,

@CatherineFlick My son says he has to plug in a car when he's playing! "Needs to charge!"

This August I got into mending. I read a library ebook, "Mending Life: A Handbook for Repairing Clothes and Hearts" while on vacation and promptly bought the hardcover upon returning home.

My first mend was some tears inside a bucket hat I've had for over 2 decades. I used my new whip stitch skills and it went pretty quickly! Not the prettiest of mends, but that's okay. I did this as my first project because no one will see them~

I've also darned some socks - I'll post those soon!

The same book, open to a section with whip stitch instructions and diagrams.
The inside of a green bucket hat. Some of the fabric is fraying and lifting up, the seam coming undone.
The same hat, with the previously gaping fabric now sewed up. Some of the fabric fraying is still visible, but it looks tidier.

CatLover12,

@eladnarra I've gotten into mending recently too! I darned many of my handknit socks that have been wearing out on the bottom with a speedweve darning loom. It's really addictive! And I reinforced the crotch gusset of my jeans that were getting quite thin. Now I'm just looking for more to mend lol

CatLover12,

@eladnarra Oh I need to mend my husband's smart wool socks too! I keep forgetting to check them after the laundry is done (but I notice the holes when he's wearing them).

MCCARTHY IS REMOVED

House Speaker Republican Kevin McCarthy has been voted out of his position as Speaker!

The vote is ongoing, but seven Republicans have voted for his removal, sealing his fate.

I expect utter chaos in the House for MONTHS before moderate Republicans make a deal with the dems for the next Speaker.

It is a disgrace to this country; created by a dozen MAGA REPUBLICANS!

CatLover12,

@samhainnight And funding the government after the current bill runs out (end of October I think)?

That one time I made this blouse by sewing together pieces of embroidered cotton batiste by hand with 2-3mm seam allowances or felled seams when I wanted the pattern to meet very nicely. Straight seams by machine and all finishing by hand, if I recall! It took a long time but was very satisfying.

Portrait of the same, but with Sini facing to the front and gazing at the viewer. The light is quite pretty. The front yoke of the blouse has been sewn in a way that looks seamless, with one repeating pattern of the embroidery running across the yoke seam, without any visible seams. The high collar has been made likewise. The hat has some nice dotted veiling and Sini is wearing a curly orange wig, which covers up some of the blouse, but the portrait itself is lovely.
A very very close up photo of the collar in progress, with a repeat of the embroidered pattern being sewn on another piece, going crosswise. The embroidered bit has a continuing line of embroidery that surrounds a chained circle motif, and this is in the process of being sewn down by hand with a tiny needle, with an absolutely tiny seam allowance. The stitches themselves are nearly invisible, the white thread getting lost in the white embroidery. There is a seam gauge and scissors for scale. The scale is minuscule.
Photo of the same, from the reverse, and from the bust yoke seam, finished. The repeat of the embroidery pattern has been sewn as an insertion, the top part overlaid across the yoke, flat, and the clipped and trimmed seam allowances whipstitched with incredibly small stitches. The bottom part is a strategically gathered shirt body, the pattern of the embroidery matching on one bit, and being relatively close elsewhere. There is a 10 eurocent coin for scale, which is tiny.

CatLover12,

@sinituulia This is amazing! Looks straight out of the Titanic!

CatLover12,

I got a quote for a heat pump and air handler (already have ductwork) for 24k, insanity.

52square, to knitting

Hey @knitting friends I am facing a new problem. I am my cardigan on metal old size 8 needles (4mm) and now the back has grown a lot. I am getting in my hand and upper arm. I noticed and stopped last night but still sore today. Obviously I will take a break until it heals, but then what should I do? Would swapping to circulars help or should I rest my knitting on a table rather than my lap or is there a better solution?

CatLover12,

@52square I think circulars would definitely help with your ergonomics!

CatLover12,

Not really sure what to make of those comments. I love Not Just Bikes and have binge watched his videos lately, but I really do get the impression that the solution is everyone move to Amsterdam (which is not practical for so many reasons). I've recently discovered the channel "Shifter" and I find him to be more realistic about biking in North America, and a little more positive and recommends attainable solutions (more so than Strong Towns) for the individual.

CatLover12,

Lucky! I love the cloudberry jam at Ikea, I bet they are wonderful!

CatLover12,

My son (3) went through some late bedtime weeks mainly after the last time change and because it was not getting dark as earlier. We've gotten him back to 7pm thank goodness, because he wakes up around 6:30 no matter when he goes to bed. We've been having a good few weeks after some unpleasant behavior changes right before he turned 3.

CatLover12,

Grass needs lots of water (resource that's scarce in places), mowing (gas lawnmowers are big polluters), many companies use fertilizers and herbicides (fertilizers run off into the water system and herbicides are very harmful). But mostly grass is a monoculture and doesn't support our native bees, butterflies, or birds which we rely on to pollinate our food crops. Grass is useful in areas with heavy foot traffic, but we grow way more of it than we really need.

Detroit-area city bans LGBTQ+ pride flags on public property (apnews.com)

A Detroit-area community has banned LGBTQ+ flags from publicly owned flagpoles. The unanimous vote by the Hamtramck City Council came during a tense meeting that raised questions about discrimination, religion and the city’s reputation for welcoming newcomers. The council voted to display only certain flags, including the...

CatLover12,

My city got so upset about raising the pride flag that they banned ALL flags other than the American flag. I don't understand how a flag can get people so crazy.

CatLover12,

It looks great and so natural. We are a year in and still working on adding more "no lawn" areas.

Hello little garden friend!

CatLover12,

Thanks for creating this, I hope others join!

CatLover12,

The main ad I always saw was that one "He Gets Us" ad which is by a company that's extremely right wing.

CatLover12,

They look delicious! I planted a lot of cherry tomatoes, this year, hopefully they will do well.

CatLover12,

Looks great! It's really satisfying to be able to mend your own clothes instead of immediately replacing them. I've looked into visible mending before which is amazing.

CatLover12,

Thank you for creating this! I was active in /toddlers and my bumper sub before migrating here. I hope others join us, because I gain so much from the online parenting community.
