We think this attack on understanding by Stefanos is junk. Almost everything about it is wrong.

The idea that our bodies, minds and emotions are only affected by the last 5000 years is profoundly stupid -- once again social scientists trying to pretend doesn't exist (Am looking at /Wengrow there).

Take this bit 🤦:
'But in reality, our bodies, our economic systems, our social relations, our family relations, and our politics have very little to do with this longer history [=species life] and a great deal to do with the much shorter one [=farming/patriarchy]'

This is a real mashup: our bodies, minds, hearts and souls have been shaped through thousands on thousands of generations of egalitarian nomadic lifestyle -- we need to know about that to challenge the constraints of heinous inequality in emerging class societies. Yes these shifted gender, economic and social relations of the past 5000 years. But we don't lose the cognitive and emotional skill set of being human overnight, or even in a few thousand years of warfare and patriarchy..

Can't find an up to date citation; a neat phylogenetic tree of #Diptera marking all the apomorphic events was shown to me by Darren Williams. There's Wagner & Liebherr 1992 https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/016953479290047F listing 22 insect orders with flightless species: almost all of them have species with secondary wing loss.

My favorite wingless insect is not a fly but a whole family of wasps: the velvet ants. Here, an American one. Note only females are wingless. The power of their sting is also the stuff of legend.

Time to take a closer look at the textures of (and some other insects) and the fantastic variation of the exoskeleton.

It'd be so neat to model these & 3D print them at a larger scale. These textures are all optimized through millions of years of to make insects strong, hygienic, stealthy, hard to attack... and who knows what else. So much to learn from them!

(Thanks to cnestus at tumblr for showing me this paper! https://www.tumblr.com/cnestus/742527231977455616/source-harris-1979-a-glossary-of-surface?source=share)

So I go looking for some of the textures and they aren't ALL ants. Some are bees and other insects. That's probably why 37 stood out. I've never seen a texture like that on an ant. (It's a carpenter bee!)

All of these insects can be found in California.

@futurebird when i was working with ants under the dissection scope (sorry... for mounting and identification. mixed feelings about smothering the poor kids) i SO wanted to make paintings of them, a few feet wide!

you got a scope? you can put some honey under the scope and they can come and drink and you can look at em.
