The preceding graphic is only true for Mastodon-like software though. It's a bit more complex over here on the Facebook influenced side of the fediverse. Don't know if you're familiar with Facebook (and things might have changed in the decade or more since I left it); but what sent their connectivity into the stratosphere originally was the ability to include conversations your friends were involved in within your own "newsfeed" (timeline, stream, whatever) and see outside your own "social graph" into a much bigger space.
Anyway, we've emulated that in a decentralised framework -- so this is why your post showed up in my stream. I wasn't following you at the time and nobody on my server/instance was connected with you or boosted your post, but a few my of my friends became involved in the conversation and this brought it into my timeline. It's a software feature we call "friend of friend conversations" and you can turn it on or off based on your own personal communication needs/desires.
G'day. You probably don't know me, but I've seen your posts before. They've been boosted or relayed by one or more of my connections and wound up in our little fringe corner of the fediverse. I'm a fediverse developer in Bugger All, Australia. I work on the streams repository - which I usually describe as the "best fediverse software you never heard of", but it looks like a couple of people here have already brought it to your attention. I know Mike McCue (Flipboard developer) from years ago at Netscape - and it's likely through his conversations that you've popped up in remote Australia before - but he wasn't involved this time around. Small world really when you're talking about six degrees of separation.
@mikedev how very nice to meet you! I am following you now. This is exactly what I love about the Fediverse. Here I am asking @mike a ton of questions about activitypub and here you are all the way in Australia. So yes, this is great. I am a @Flipboard user and have been for years. I love the app so much that I run a user community group. Through this group I made made great friends and connections. I am already seeing the benefits of Mastodon.
So these are the numbers of people who --> could <-- have seen the hashtags you've used, hashtags being the primary way people find posts from people they don't know
OK: this all depends on if they're --> following <-- those hashtags (which I guess being included in this stat would imply) and if they're paying any attention to them
I don't know what this tells you, but that's a pretty good number of people from the times I've looked up hashtag traffic in the past
@janettespeyer hi, I have multiple accounts and I was lurking mastodon.social where I found a reply to your post with an hashtag I was following.
Since I use my mastodon.social account only for lurking (because that instance is more connected and I can find more search results) I searched your post on this one to reply.
I don't know if your account was already known to my instance but if it wasn't that's how I could connect them (searching a post or an username I find "outside" my federation).
@SparkIT that’s great! I am also on a couple of instances. Mastodon.socisl is one and Flipboard.social is the other. I am on the latter because I have friends there and it’s easier to start with friends
@janettespeyer I tried to search your flipboard account but it didn't work. Not sure if it's opt-in or just available for a selected number of accounts, though.
@BeAware get it! I think. So I am on the @Flipboard instance and you are on your own @beaware instance. You stopped by to visit me at the Flipboard hotel. So if I am understanding this, it’s the same principals as Twitter only with more freedom. You, for example, can control your server and kick out those aggravating trolls that Twitter doesn’t bother with.
It's like a nation with a bunch of cities with roads between them. Lots of roads. Each city gets news (via the roads) from lots and lots of other cities, but of course it's fall-out-of-bed easy to see the news from your own city.
(The cities are instances, or servers)
Every city can choose which other cities' mail wagons can come into the city. Some cities, for example, send out tons of porn mail in their wagons, so other cities say "nah" and don't let the mail wagons in.
Some cities are full of fascists so the rest of us don't let their wagons come into our cities (they are "defederated" from our servers, or at least from mine).
