So to make it clear: if a huge instance like is federated to , they would have access to a lot of semi-private data that they would normally not have access to, in particular any liked/favourited message from their server.

Also if your following list is private, any person followed there would be known to them. That's potentially a lot. Not even talking about messages archiving.

The whole story of joining the through was probably always a decoy, smoke... just noise to buy time to execute a strategy to acquire all the VIP accounts from

Since the whole debacle of Twitter, Meta was and still is the best positioned social network to grab those accounts.

With all their shortcomings, they were and are the most effective among all social networks at identifying people vs bots and at executing effective moderation (despite all the terrible mental health toll for their poor overseas moderators).

They just didn't have ready a clone of Twitter or something that could mimic Twitter and they needed some time to build it.

The Fediverse (and ) on the other hand, had multiple clones very ready, so they needed to buy some time to avoid the VIPs to migrate before they were ready... so they needed some smokes and mirrors.

There is very little for Meta to gain by joining the Fediverse, and if they really wanted to do it, they would have built support for ActivityPub in Threads from day one, and not leaving it in the current 'coming soon' status as it is now.

Once they have accomplish their objective, which is sucking all the valuable accounts from Twitter, which they are doing at a rate of 1 million accounts per hour, they would probably forget about the Fedi and and shelf the idea forever.

Soon time will tell us.

Checked out Threads for all of 5 minutes.

The idea is interesting. The interface also looks alright.

What I cannot stand is having people I don’t follow and brands I don’t care about showing up in my feed.

Absolute non-starter for me. Not sorry.

Meta Threads

Ok I know we all hate Meta's practicies, but had to install threads app just to see the user experience.

Social media in 2023 has truly disrupted.

ablackcatstail,

I wonder if once has its implementation if there will be some content filter to only leech the postings that don't insult its advertisers or the company proper. Something tells me they're gonna have to do that.

wogan,

My only comment on the drama: I kinda forgot that Solid was a thing. https://solidproject.org/

sharearea,

gives few shits about "scraping the (current) " - it's pocket change to them; their data cache is YUGE

They want to be the darling was with celebs.. TV and media talking about "threading" (?) and not "tweeting"

..and they have the money and footprint to make that happen out the chute

Long-term if sticks with them? I could see them pushing users to run micro-instances, alleviating some of their and concerns

User data is (ab)used in any platform we know so far.

Don't think for a second that and aren't doing the same thing, just without stating the obvious in the terms and conditions!

arsgoetia,

how about instead of completely defederating from , instead, we could limit posts from the site that gets featured on mastodon's front page?

Matterrr,

Just discovered Brave's foray into search (search.brave.com). With a little research it appears to be based on some community/open source search indexes rather than tied to a private index like duckduckgo is. Its summarizer also seems very useful after some light use.

Does anyone have any opinions on using Brave over duckduckgo - particularly in terms of things like privacy and quality of results?

So, wants to ... Are you really sure? 😋
