@ginaintheburg@georgetakei Two problems with that, I’m afraid. Both HughesNet and Viasat rely on geostationary satellites that are positioned over the Americas, and so are unusable in Ukraine, and they’re both using SpaceX to launch their satellites…
The thing is, there are lots of communication satellites out there from different companies.
When it comes to high-bandwidth, low-latency, no-precision-needed-to-connect, hard-to-jam comms, there's only Starlink.
So yes, you can use alternatives. But they come with consequences. At the start of the war, Ukraine was reliant on Viasat. Russia launched a cyberattack on Viasat and took down their communications. Starlink saved them.
Also, #Musk ‘s reasons are utterly immaterial. No one person gets to decide on this sort of thing. For all of our criticisms, this is what democracy is. #Ukraine has democratically decided to defend itself against an aggressor and the US has democratically decided to assist its ally.
He feels his opinion is more important than the hundreds of millions of people that agree with this course of action. It isn’t.

@georgetakei the US needs to nationalize SpaceX/Starlink to keep Elon from making such terrible decisions that can destabilize democracy and the economy.
The Boards of SpaceX and Tesla need to remove him from control of those companies.
@georgetakei So some prefer Musk allows Starlink to be used for killing people - as long as they are Russians? Lovely bit of bloodthirstiness from Westerners sitting at home ignoring the call for diplomatic solutions.

@georgetakei that is very much how acts of terrorism work. arrest the target or shoot it, but as long as a genocidal child murderer goes about free there will continue to be these acts of senseless, devastating evil.
@georgetakei wouldn't most people call this treason? The only thing that would get in the way of that conclusion is we haven't actually declared war on Russia. But you know we never declared war on Iraq or Afghanistan before we sent troops into battle. Meanwhile actions speak louder than words... we are spending billions of dollars defending Ukraine which Russia attacked. Russia is our defacto enemy. Period.
@georgetakei Anything that doesn't support Ukraine can be labeled as child killing, because some children will die in a war zone. Conversely, everything that does support Ukraine will kill children in Russia, because they are living in a war zone. What you mean to say is that everyone should support Ukraine, and it doesn't matter if Russian children die.
