Boosting for #legal and #tech friends. Important and underreported issue.

Black taxpayers were between 2.9 and 4.7 times more likely to be audited by a data-driven audit algorithm. The IRS' response is that they're making tweaks.

This is insufficient.

Answers. Accountability. What happened? How did an algorithm exhibit decidedly human biases?

@andrew @law I would prefer if the government audited people based on minimizing underpayment of taxes given the resources available to audit and collect.

If 100 agents can collect $1000 from 100,000 people in a year that's $1M per agent per year. But if 100 agents can collect $10M from 100 people in a year that's $10M per agent per year.

And if we took some of the collected taxes to fund more agents eventually you'd maximize collection and minimize underpayment.

The UK government is completely out of step with other European countries on Israel and Gaza.

France and Germany support the ICC in issuing an arrest warrant for Netanyahu.

Spain, Ireland and Norway will today announce they recognise Palestine as a state.

Meanwhile, Tory ministers seek to punish public bodies who don’t want to do business with a state that has killed 34,000+ people - mostly women and children.

Wanting to hold Netanyahu (and Hamas) accountable for war crimes is rational.

enmodo,
@enmodo@mastodon.social avatar

@JugglingWithEggs congratulations Israel on becoming the new equivalent of apartheid South Africa of the 21st Century. I remember how long the anti-apartheid protests were opposed by the establishment who steadfastly refused to divest. Turns out the history was on the side of the protestors that time and I have a feeling it will be again.

Somehow I feel that protests within Israel are not getting much coverage too.

On apartheid Israel

When apartheid South Africa came under growing international pressure at the UN, the General Assembly initiated boycotts.

It suspended South Africa, stripping it of its Member State rights & privileges.

The apartheid regime "could no longer be seated, speak or vote at the General Assembly & other UN organs.

"Apartheid South Africa changed course because it became a pariah & isolated regime"

I remember all the times my fellow students threw cans of pink paint at Barclays Bank and protested for divestment from South Africa by the college funds. I'm glad they never gave up.

It's so clear what the right side of justice is here and neither US party is on it at the moment. If you support the ICC for indicting Putin for war crimes one day and then question their legitimacy for indicting both Hamas and Israeli leaders for war crimes you kind of lost your own.

Since we now know Alito was flying his flag upside down at the time, let’s review one of the plans the coup plotters had involving him.

This interview by criminal defendant Powell is interesting. It suggests that the purpose of the insurrection was to DELAY the electoral college certification to give time to intervene on this legal challenge. But, Powell says they didn’t anticipate Pelosi reconvening Congress that day.

enmodo,
@enmodo@mastodon.social avatar

@skykiss I would respect the Dems more if they moved to impeach Alito. And then Thomas. I don't care if he is not convicted, we need to put it on record that this conduct is not acceptable.

And even if the impeachment doesn't stick Alito needs to be indicted. And I would assume there is a trail of evidence that Thomas and more were in on it.

Meanwhile I'd love to know what the 12th Amendment challenge is. Read it, it's very clear...

enmodo,
@enmodo@mastodon.social avatar

@skykiss

"The President of the Senate shall, in the presence of the Senate and House of Representatives, open all the certificates and the votes shall then be counted;

The person having the greatest number of votes for President, shall be the President"

Last I heard her 12th Amendment theory rested entirely on bringing the fake and criminally concocted slate of electors to bare. It's clear she is completely unrepentant and doubling down on it even after being convicted for her part in it.

I'm increasingly convinced that not supporting a Palestinian ceasefire and brokering peace there will be the hill that American democracy dies on because it will let Mister "Dictator for one-day" back into power and dictatorship for life. I think mostly I'm concerned about reading it myself and staring into my teenage psyche and not recognizing me.

Where do you live and how do you feel about it?

Obviously, don't tell me exactly where you live, no actual addresses please! You can be as vague as you like.

I live in Central Missouri in the U.S.

Pros:

This is an absolutely beautiful place, green rolling hills, lots of rivers, lakes, ponds, and natural springs, cool caves to explore.

Lots of farming here, so great access to quality fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, and dairy.

It's relatively inexpensive to live here compared with other states, because it's a "flyover".

I'm close enough to three major cities, that it's an easy day trip, and I'm about halfway to anywhere in the U.S.

We have one of the best Conservation departments in the U.S. and this is one of the few things that is a bipartisan issue. Lots of awesome nature programs that are free or cheap, state parks, conservation areas, bird watching, hunting, boating, foraging available to everyone.

Cons:

Yeah, it's a big one, it is a RED STATE, while a lot of the cities are blue, there is a large rural population, that votes red. Abortion is not legal here. People often vote against their own self interest.

While I'm not against responsible gun ownership, lots of people aren't responsible, and people have access to guns that definitely should not.

We have very few employee protections here, while the cost of living is relatively low compared with other places, it's taken years to get to a $12 minimum wage, and it's still not enough.

enmodo,
@enmodo@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr I live in Paradise, Nevada although most people know it by a different name.

Pros:

  • entertainment and dining
  • drive 30 min in any direction and you hit mountains, desert
  • 3 other States close by
  • relatively cheap housing
  • cheap flights
  • no taxes, tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, fires, or rain
  • hot summers

Cons:

  • shitty health care, schools, drivers
  • 40M tourists a year
  • far from ocean
  • purple but many think it is blood red
  • only 25% born here but migrants are hated
enmodo,
@enmodo@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr you'll notice I didn't list the heat as a problem. After 3 summers I'm perfectly adapted to 2-3 summer months of 100F+ temps. The evenings are glorious, pool is warm and fun all summer long, and humidity non-existent so it feels 10-20F cooler than anywhere else. The shoulder seasons are perfect all day long. Really mid-March to mid-November is very nice. Just keep your A/C working and don't walk barefoot in the day time or grab anything that's been sitting in the sun!

This seems about par for the course among people claiming to be libertarians.

You'd think that someone like Musk who claims to be a libertarian would just bail them out with a few million. But that would be against libertarian principles since he'd never get that money back.

It's easier to hide behind a government that does your dirty non libertarian stuff for you, and then go home to your shack in the woods full of guns and coz-play being a libertarian.
