iPad feature I'd love: deep sleep. I find whenever I go a few days or a week between using an iPad, it's often dead or almost dead. An auto-deep sleep mode after 24 hours of non-use would be awesome, even if it took 5 seconds or so to wake back up

@medievalist@writing.exchange avatar

@christianselig Why not power off?

jwcounts,

@christianselig I’ve been able to greatly extend battery life by setting up an automation to put it in airplane mode overnight. I usually only have to recharge it once a week or so

Hdsheena,
@Hdsheena@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig it would still be faster than plugging it in and waiting for it to eventually decide it can turn on!

_kit,
@_kit@fosstodon.org avatar

@christianselig I can’t decide if this is an, “If I asked people what they want, they’d ask for faster horses” or you have to feed a horse every day argument.

@christianselig I have an automation that switches off all connections via airplane mode, turns on battery saver and puts brightness to a minimum.

The automation is toggled by a focus mode that I created.

Whenever I am about to leave the iPad unused for a while I toggle the "iPad Deep Sleep" focus on. It also switches on at night automatically.

This improved battery life a lot, actually.

buzzle,
@buzzle@mas.to avatar

@christianselig I wonder if you can do that with the Shortcuts app (pushing your device into Low Power Mode to kill background stuff) when it’s unused for a certain amount of time

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@buzzle Hmm interesting idea, I wonder how you would determine lack of use though

dillonmok,

@christianselig @buzzle If there’s an app you use every time on the iPad, you could log the date each time that app is opened to a JSON file. Then run an automation every day that checks the date and if it’s been more than X period of time, enable Low Power Mode

buzzle,
@buzzle@mas.to avatar

@christianselig Here's a really dumb idea:

Have an automation that triggers every 4 hours (so 6 times a day total) that checks if between three of those points, is brightness == 0

If yes, low power mode

Best case, LPM after 8 hours. Only issue is when an app sends a notification and turns on the display just as the shortcut runs

platkus,
@platkus@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig @buzzle Just set up an automation to put it in low power mode when it is locked. And bring it out when unlocked. Problem solved.

veeesix,
@veeesix@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig I don’t know if it’d help, but you could automatically set your iPad into low power mode at night. I set mine between 11pm-9am.

@christianselig Try disabling background app refresh and see if it helps.

@christianselig my iPad is always dead

Tinrocket,
@Tinrocket@mastodon.online avatar

@christianselig Dead/mostly dead iPad here too. It’s gotten so that I have a shortcut that sends me a message (to plug the iPad in) when the iPad's battery drops to a certain percentage.

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

Remember when iPads had a month of standby battery time? They do so much more now, but I really miss that, I'm lucky to get a week on any of mine now

jacksonhayes,

@christianselig I leave mine in my Magic Keyboard thingy and it is always dead when I want to use it

Iamgroot11,
@Iamgroot11@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig my 2021 11” pro still lasts about a month standby

Axman6,

@christianselig I blame email, email was a mistake.

ogi,
@ogi@hachyderm.io avatar

@christianselig huh, the iPad we use in my household (current generation plain iPad, not a pro, not a mini, not an air) will last a really long time battery wise (easily a week) when unused. I’ll try and pay more attention to it, but I wonder if there is a specific app that’s draining power from your device.

Infoseepage,
@Infoseepage@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig I pretty much pick up my Ipad Mini about once a week when I'm planted on the sofa and want to watch some television and do some light browsing and stuff at the same time. These days, every time I flip it open, it is at like 61% battery. Like seriously, haven't touched it in the a week and 61%.

I want it to basically be in a deep standby and ready for use, not puttering away in the background continuously draining the battery.

harpaa01,
@harpaa01@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig I miss the actual 10 hours of battery life. I feel like they kind of just keep listing that battery life but in practice I get less than half that. Hell, I get a full 8 hours out of my MacBook Pro and that machine is working a hell of a lot harder than the iPad ever is.

craiggrannell,
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig It’s interesting how rarely I charge my iPad Air and how often I forget about it. The thing goes for weeks and weeks without being plugged in.

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell Man that is bonkers to hear such a different report, I have 4 different iPads and my girlfriend has one as well, and none of them last 10 days haha

craiggrannell,
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig Sorry, I should clarify. I’m talking about the iPad Air in the sense of the original iPad Air. That one goes on forever. The newer models? Not so much. My Pro usually conks out after a few days of sitting there doing nothing. A week at best.

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell Ohhhhh, and you still have one and use it? That's tempting haha

@christianselig My M1 iPad Pro 12.9 battery is so bad and they still won’t replace even with AC+. I may have to pull some strings.

mattdarveniza,
@mattdarveniza@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig I think Apple have underestimated how important standby time on iPads is. Every time I pick up my iPad it’s flat, which only reinforces by habit of not using it. Its existence in my household is reliant on it being used at a moments notice without being constantly plugged in.

jsatk,
@jsatk@sfba.social avatar

@christianselig I gave up on iPads for this reason. I use it only on the weekends and it’s always dead.

GeekAndDad,
@GeekAndDad@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig Feels like some service is waking it up to sync (or something).

I wonder if installing some of the profiles here might help you pin it down? (Battery Life and Background Networking, for example)

https://developer.apple.com/bug-reporting/profiles-and-logs/?platform=ios

(I’m assuming iOS is the one to use since there’s no iPadOS category here).

lucas,

@christianselig I created a shortcut automation to automatically enable airplane mode at midnight.

Since then, I need to charge it way less.

_inside,

@christianselig and yet our apps still can’t do much when they’re not in the foreground :/

leemoknows,

@christianselig Gotta charge my mini most times twice a week. I use cellular in the evenings at the gym, so maybe that’s what’s tough on it.

vmachiel,
@vmachiel@mastodon.nl avatar

@christianselig my m1 iPad Pro gets that easily.

Maybe turn some background refresh stuff off, or some location stuff you’re not using. Helped with mine.

oliverhaslam,
@oliverhaslam@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig I was starting to think it was the battery in my 2018 iPad Pro but you’re saying they all drain battery in standby now? I too remember the weeks of battery and thought they still had it 👀

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@oliverhaslam We have 5 different iPad models in our household and they all do this haha

oliverhaslam,
@oliverhaslam@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig All of that said, mine has been sat for almost a week and done way better than usual. Wonder if it being in a closed case helped.

LeleSocho,

@christianselig iPhones too, even a brand new one overnight loses 2% of battery.
Wish all the iDevices started consuming like they did ~10 years ago instead of pushing the envelope on what's acceptable and consume more and more energy.

Strwpok,
@Strwpok@mastodon.world avatar

@christianselig how are you using your iPad? Mine is hardly left alone long enough for me to worry about standby time.

bordeauxblues,

@christianselig thought about exactly this earlier today, when my iPad - which I sometimes use as a second screen thanks to Sidecar but haven’t touched in a few days - still had lost 30% of its charge. maybe I have to turn it off from all connections to make it last longer…

cdevroe,
@cdevroe@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig my iPad battery lasts forever.

avarix,

@christianselig I’ve had inconsistent standby battery drain in my household. My child has an iPad 6th gen and the last iPad mini with a home button. We set the iPad mini up from a backup of the 6th gen which does not last more than a few days in standby. Meanwhile the mini last weeks if not months. It drains about 1% per day. My current gen Mini loses about 5% to 10% a day. My wife’s iPad Air also sips power in standby. No ryme or reason.

Heratiki,

@christianselig I get close to a month on my iPad Pro 10” gen 2. Take into account I dont have many apps on it and tend to delete and install apps as I need them on iPad.

tweece,
@tweece@techhub.social avatar

@christianselig I just leave mine on the charger, not great I know but still going strong since 2018

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@tweece Yeah, makes me wish iPads had something easy like MagSafe, even if it was just through the pins

tweece,
@tweece@techhub.social avatar

@christianselig I leave my keyboard trackpad thing on my desk and dock it there

Josh,
@Josh@holme.social avatar

@christianselig @tweece Belkin made a charging dock that would charge through the pins on the original iPad Pro

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@Josh@holme.social avatar
christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

Josh,
@Josh@holme.social avatar

@christianselig It charged really slow from what I remember, but if it’s just living there then it doesn’t really matter

brunoph,
@brunoph@breakpoint.cafe avatar

@christianselig I disabled all background activity on my iPad and its night and day how much longer the battery lasts. I figured I never care to get notifications from it while it is locked, and I always check things like email first on my phone, so I have no real need for it. Worth trying imo.

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@brunoph What do you mean by disabling all background activity?

brunoph,
@brunoph@breakpoint.cafe avatar

@christianselig Settings > General > Background App Refresh > Off everything

hey,
@hey@nowicki.io avatar

@brunoph I wonder if putting it to airplane mode with disabled WiFi would have similar impact. Theoretically background activities would still work but not doing much as there’s not connections to the world
