I might have to start a little series of my experiences talking to fellow developers at work. Because it seems that me and my colleagues aren't always on the same planet (not sure who is where).

Today my odd experience was talking to another (senior) developer about how I want to focus on learning my development environments a lot more this year. Mainly how important it is to really understand the tools that you use everyday, and the benefits you can gain from all that.

Literally, the only response I got was a blank stare.

I don't mean that to come across as if I think I'm an expert, and everyone I work with is dumb.

Just that for whatever reason, my colleagues and I seem to have totally different ideas about programming.

I've worked with the developer closely for many years, and they probably weren't the best person to talk to about that subject, since they don't seem to venture outside of IntelliJ, and use the mouse to copy and paste text. But I thought I'd at least get a "yeah, sure" before they went on with their day, probably thinking I'm a weird guy.

@chrishannah Thanks for sharing this. I've observed something similar during my data science studies.

Among my colleagues, it's partly a fear of trying new things, and partly a lack of curiosity. It's nice to have tools you're comfortable with, but a lack of flexibility in a profession that involves technology is unhealthy.

@chrishannah I’ve had colleagues like that before. The most extreme example was someone who was absolutely magic at one specific thing (building things in Unity), and utterly useless at anything else involving a computer

@neilgmacy Yeah I've come across something similar to that as well. I always find it odd.
