I deleted my toot about Broadcom abandoning VMware ESXi last month as I got fed up of reply guys explaining to me it couldn’t possibly happen.. but anyway, it has happened. https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/2107518?lang=en_US

    @GossiTheDog

    @rbrogger They will hike for sure - but that will just add urgency to get off. If the price goes high enough orgs can be off in 6 months. (I'd switch to a consultant role for this for $100/hour - likely as a sub-consultant under people who actually know what they are doing around vmware making $200/hour)

    brownglock,

    @GossiTheDog shit, there goes my default lab install. Time to get my Proxmox/Cloudstack/OpenStack/whatever-fu sorted out.

    djb,

    @brownglock @GossiTheDog Incus (LXD fork and the future) FTW https://linuxcontainers.org/incus/

    @GossiTheDog @hdm yes, I am studying going to #debian #kvm after 10 years or so of esxi #homelab

    hdm,

    @hanscees @GossiTheDog I can recommend Proxmox if you are looking for something turn-key (but KVM and various wrappers, including the new VirtualBox-KVM are all great too).

    @GossiTheDog see also: the entire VMWare-improvement economy dying out. Vendors in that space have 2 options now: port to something else, and hope that the something else they chose is successful enough to make a return on the expense; or wander off into the desert and never be seen again either by shutting up shop now or riding the VMware train until all their remaining customers migrate off.

    The most well-known vendor in this space is Veeam, whose flagship product doesn’t work well at all outside the VMWare ecosystem. Coincidentally, they just hired a new CEO…

    @GossiTheDog @lisamelton Mike's first law of tech business. Big tech will always screw the channel. Every single time..

    @GossiTheDog haha, I am very glad I didn't bother looking at their stuff that hard for my years-long research project into CPUID emulation in hypervisors.

    jernej__s,

    @GossiTheDog I don't really care about ESXi (moved away from it around the time v7 became available), but I really hope somebody competent gets Workstation, because it's still much more user-friendly than the competition.

    ryebread8403,

    @GossiTheDog I'm new to the data center side of the house. If this is a pattern with Broadcom, what's the next bad news we expect?
