At long last, I've done it.

I've registered my .scot domain.
http://fitheach.scot

I've been meaning to do this for years. Thankfully, no-one else thought to register the domain, in the meantime.

In the next few days I'll move the website to the new domain. At the moment the .scot redirects to .co.uk

I'll keep both domains, with the .scot as the primary domain for all my activities.

"... the next few days" was wildly optimistic. 😃 All done now (or, at least, I think so).

Moving the current website to a new domain was a lot of work. Changes to the (Pelican) website was the least effort. It is all the little jobs around the edges that takes time. Like getting my verified tick on Mastodon. 😃

All I need to do now is remind myself to enter the address with .scot rather than .co.uk. I'll have to work against my fingers going into autopilot.

Wayhaaay, welcome to the .scot party😁

True to the national stereotype, the only thing holding me back all these years was the £40 p.a. domain cost. I decided to splash out this year.

@fitheach @Jkp Yes, the cost sticks in my throat too. I've almost given in on numerous occasions, remembering just in time that a new domain isn't just for Christmas.

@withaveeay
I'm pretty sure there is no technical reason for the inflated cost of .scot domains. There might be some economies of scale for the more popular domains, such as .co.uk. Although, I suspect the .scot registrar set the price at what the market would bear.

@Jkp

withaveeay,

@fitheach @Jkp That has been my hunch too.

Jkp,
@Jkp@mastodon.scot avatar

@withaveeay @fitheach Ha, when I retire I may have to regress to co.uk ;(
But...I somehow doubt it.
Like a smoker and their cigarettes, my .scot will be the last to go.
Also, my family would definitely stage an insurrection if I tried to change their email address' again 😀

@Jkp
I'm retaining both domains. The co.uk is a pittance, so, may as well keep it. Although, getting rid of a UK has its attractions. 😃

@fitheach @withaveeay
I also still have the co.uk which, was mainly a belt and braces approach to swapping several email accounts and the inevitable forgotten logins!
But, you're right, may be as well to hang on to it!
After all, I may become a unionist when I retire.

Hello...? Where have you all gone?

fitheach,
@fitheach@mstdn.io avatar

@Jkp
I've got 1,900 email addresses. It's a long story...

One can never have too many email addresses 😁

fitheach,
@fitheach@mstdn.io avatar

@Jkp
Only possible when you have your own domain.

@withaveeay

edavies,

@fitheach You don't necessarily need your own domain to have an effectively unlimited number of email addresses. E.g., some providers allow '+' in the local part followed by a made up tag:

@edavies
True, but, it is a lot easier with your own domain. I run an MTA (Exim) for all of my domains. I use virtual domain text files for each of them. Each file contains recipient address and target address mappings. Creating or deleting an email address only requires adding or deleting a line in those files.

The target addresses don't have to be one of my "real" email addresses.

@Jkp @withaveeay @fitheach Yep, there's a reason I went for .net instead for my server.

@gunchleoc
I've got some .net domains, too. Nice and generic. 😃
