Mastodon has two types of people: people who really want replies to their posts and people who extremely do not.

(I am in the first category, reply away)

@tomw It is puzzling, but at least here there seems to be less (still non-zero, but less) emphasis on follower count determining who is allowed to reply. "How dare this person with 100 followers dare interact with me!"

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@mikej Oh yeah, that was an awful Twitter-ism:

"I don't think that's right..."
"Well you have 5 followers lol"

@tomw speak only if it makes a difference /s

My Mastodon usage is mostly liking, boosting things that can be beneficial (like someone asking for help etc.) and rarely reply.

And when I reply, I get no reply back, sometimes, very rarely, a like :(

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@arunmani I think lots of people don't always reply to replies, even if they do appreciate them!

arunmani,
@arunmani@mastodon.social avatar

@tomw agreed!

Replying on principle.

@TonyJWells I believe, according to niche but forgotten Mastodon rules, that the original post should be "cw meta"

@tomw Good point.

@tomw that's actually a genius observation

There is a third type, the "only reply if" essay-writer who sets out a long list of conditions, but I think it's safer to leave them well alone

KydiaMusic,
@KydiaMusic@mastodon.social avatar

@tomw I am both, depending on the day & what else is going on at the moment. Sometimes I post hoping for interaction because I’m bored or I think I have a good thought that I hope will spark discussion. And other times I post & then forget about it until someone replies and expects me to read an article or watch a 45-minute video on the subject and I’m like Sir I am already bored of this topic which I brought up, and also now I’m busy and resent randos making demands of me.

Thanks brain!

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@KydiaMusic Maybe reply-as-social-obligation is part of it. The way I see it, this is heavily async communication and my reply may never be seen, person may be busy, drop phone in a lake etc, who knows? So I don't experience an obligation to acknowledge replies

GlasWolf,
@GlasWolf@mastodon.scot avatar

@tomw Not just on Mastodon, but some people throw out disdainful "mansplaining"/"reply guy" subtoots whenever anyone even gently disagrees with something they post.

It seems quite an odd mindset to me - if you don't want any reaction, why post it on social media?

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@GlasWolf Reply-guying is a real problem - post pretty much anything about a Windows problem for an example ("install Linux!") But yes, some people seem to want no replies ever.

GlasWolf,
@GlasWolf@mastodon.scot avatar

@tomw Absolutely, I was trying to differentiate from that by saying "gently disagrees". It's the overuse of those terms to shut down discussion that grates.

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@GlasWolf Posting to social media appears to strengthen the perceived level of disagreement, like:

"I don't think that's quite right... (thoughtful and mildly worded post ensues)"
"Who asked you, get fucked"

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@GlasWolf That said, an ostentatiously faux-civil tone is even worse than a hostile one, and almost always a sign of bad faith, so I can see why mildness can get ignored

Eyeing the niche T-shirt market?

@tomw Here you go 😉

@tomw Some people don't seem to want to interact at all — I find that quite odd.

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@tokyo_0 I can understand it on some level but it seems to escalate to increasingly furious screeds about how no one should ever reply to them. A bit mystifying

The irony of this getting some boosts and likes but no replies
